Comparing moving quotes is a lot of work, though. Some Florida movers’ quoting processes can take days to complete. However, I reached out to several movers who operate within the state, inquired about their prices and services, and researched their online presence. We also scored each one on basic services, customization options, reputation, and transparency. My secret shopping should help you cut down on the legwork you need to do to find the moving company that works best for you.

If you’re looking to work with one of the best moving companies in Florida, I highly suggest starting with these five. Each operates within the state, but they all offer different services to their customers. This guide should help you sort through them to identify the best movers for your needs.

Top 5 Florida Moving Companies

American Van Lines: Most Transparent Pricing
Highlights
  • If you’re looking to move to, from, or within Florida, I highly recommend American Van Lines. Based in Pompano Beach, FL, they have a majority of the services Floridians should be looking for during a move, and they’re backed by a stellar reputation on trusted review sites.
  • Know that AVL doesn’t operate outside of the continental United States and doesn’t offer extras like car shipping. If you need more from your mover, I’d suggest going with International Van Lines. They’re also based in South Florida, have a standout reputation, and service over 150 countries.
  • Due to the influx of people moving to Florida, the state faces an influx of moving scams. Checking federal registrations, state licenses, reviews, and Better Business Bureau (BBB) ratings can help you avoid mover fraud.

My Expert Recommendation

If you’re looking to work with a mover in Florida, I’d recommend starting with American Van Lines. Out of the five best movers I’ve highlighted on this list, they have the strongest reputation behind them, according to trusted review sites. They are also our choice for “most transparent pricing.” In fact, they have special offers for people moving to and from Miami featured on their website. When a quoting process can take hours or even days, it’s nice to know how much a move could cost you before you even pick up the phone.

However, AVL isn’t going to work for every Floridian. They don’t operate outside of the lower 48 United States, and they don’t offer all the bells and whistles, like car shipping and junk removal. If you need something more from your mover, I’d suggest International Van Lines. They offer a majority of the services homeowners need from their movers, have a solid reputation, and operate in over 150 countries.

Florida Moving Companies I Didn’t Include

Two moving companies I didn’t include that operate in Florida are Allied Van Lines and North American Van Lines. While they both offer the solutions homeowners are looking for from movers, their quoting process is lengthy. Both require homeowners to schedule an in-person or virtual assessment to walk through the belongings to be moved. They also don’t have as strong of reputations as the five I included on this list.

Our Reviews of the Best Moving Companies

Most Transparent Pricing

American Van Lines

4.0

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
Price Matching Available

American Van Lines has one of the most informative websites I’ve seen among movers during my secret shopping. The brand goes above and beyond to explain their services, highlight sample prices, and provide tips to make your move as stress-free as possible. While IVL does come close to AVL in this regard, AVL wins out as their website is much easier to navigate.

AVL is also backed by a stellar reputation. As of this writing, they have an A+ and 4.1 on the BBB, a 4.4 on Trustpilot, and a 4.2 on Google. Customers highlighted wonderful customer service and a great experience from crews and representatives alike. In addition, the brand has several video testimonials featured on their website and YouTube channel.

AVL is very forthcoming about what they offer, but compared to other full-service movers, they don’t offer all the services homeowners in Florida will need. They don’t operate outside of the continental United States, and they don’t offer extra services, like car shipping, junk removal, and home staging..

In addition, while AVL’s website is extremely informative, their emailed quotes are less so. In fact, the language used is confusing. It’s not entirely clear what extra fees you could be paying on moving day, and their cancellation policy isn’t easy to understand either.

The company is backed by an amazing reputation, with high reviews on the BBB, Trustpilot, and Google. Customers often praised the knowledgeable and polite representatives as well as the professional and efficient crews. AVL’s website also highlights several reviews and video testimonials on their website and YouTube channel.

When looking at other moving companies’ websites, it can be easy to get frustrated. Many of the movers I’ve personally investigated during my secret shopping fail to list details about the basic services they offer. That’s not the case with AVL’s website. Theirs goes into depth about their services, what they have to offer customers, and their differentiators from other brands. They even have pricing and special offers on their website, which isn’t something I’ve seen with other movers, another reason why they deserved an overall rating of 8.5 out of 10.

However, AVL falls short for me in two ways: They don’t offer all the bells and whistles homeowners need, and their emails are lacking. For customers looking to move from Florida to Spain or Florida to Alaska, AVL isn’t going to be able to help, as they only operate in the lower 48 states. And while many movers outline their services in their emails, AVL doesn’t. In fact, most of the writing in their emails is confusing and lackluster. If you find you’re having to contact a representative to clarify the cancellation policy, you’re not alone.

For most Floridians, American Van Lines is able to cover everything you need during a move. Located in Pompano Beach, Florida, just north of Fort Lauderdale, their crews are equipped to handle local and long-distance moves within Florida as well as interstate moves within the continental United States.

However, AVL doesn’t operate in Alaska, Hawaii, or internationally. Loading and unloading are included in all of their quotes, but packing and unpacking services cost extra. However, one unique thing about AVL is their stand-alone packing service. If you are going with a self-service option like U-Pack but want to hire a third party to handle the packing, AVL actually offers this solution by itself. In addition, 30 days of storage are included in all moving quotes, and one of their storage centers is located next to their headquarters in Pompano Beach.

Cost

Moving quotes from American Van Lines included disassembly and reassembly of standard furniture, loading, unloading, and basic valuation coverage at $0.60 per pound per article, and pad wrapping for furniture. Their website is very forthcoming about special deals and moving costs, which makes them our choice for “most transparent pricing.” However, if you’re shopping around for moving estimates, you’re likely going to be disappointed at how AVL breaks down their quotes. The emails are extremely basic and, in some places, confusing. For example, I’ve found most companies base their “stairs” fee on the number of flights you have in your apartment or condo building. AVL bases these costs on weight instead, which can make it unclear how much you’re actually paying for those flights of stairs ahead of time.

For a two-bedroom move between Maybrook, NY, and Carrboro, NC, weighing an estimated 3,304 lbs, I got the following quote:

  • Self-packing option: $3,651.39
  • Full-packing option: $4,251.39 to $4,451.39

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this article is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario from Maybrook, NY, to Carrboro, NC, for a single-family home, with a move date set eight weeks away. Please be aware that these estimates may vary depending on factors such as additional services required and market fluctuations. The cost data presented was accurate at the time of writing.

American Van Lines lists several special offers on their website, including moves to and from Miami, Florida. Currently, they currently have deals for Miami to Los Angeles, CA; Dallas, TX; Atlanta, GA; and New York City, NY; as well as moves from New York City, NY; and Houston, TX; to Miami. Finally, AVL offers customers senior and seasonal discounts.

American Van Lines only received a 7 out of 10 in customization, the lowest on this list out of full-service movers. They don’t offer car shipping or junk removal, two common moving solutions among other companies. Also, they don’t offer home staging, but few companies do, in my experience. However, assembly and disassembly of standard furniture and basic valuation coverage are included in all of their moving quotes. For Floridians who need more, AVL also sells packing materials and offers solutions for antique moving and custom crating. Additionally, AVL is known for their white-glove treatment of pianos during moves and can help with transporting grand pianos, vertical pianos, digital pianos, and organs.

American Van Lines and International Van Lines are the only two brands on this list that earned a perfect 10 in reputation, but reviews are actually higher for AVL compared to IVL. As of this writing, AVL has an A+ and 4.1 on the BBB, a 4.2 on Google, and a 4.4 on Trustpilot. However, unlike IVL, they only respond to positive reviews. This makes it unclear how exactly the moving brand helps customers who have had a bad experience. In addition, AVL has video testimonials and dozens of reviews featured on their website. Positive reviews explained that they were given competitive prices, representatives were friendly, and crews were efficient and careful. However, negative reviews, especially on Yelp, where they only have a 2.3 currently, discussed unexpected fees on moving day and damaged items upon delivery.

Most Common Praise for American Van Lines

Positive reviews explained that they had standout experiences with both the representatives and the crews of American Van Lines. Everyone was said to be professional, knowledgeable, efficient, and kind, and representatives regularly checked in during the move to make sure the customer was happy with their service.

Most Common Criticism for American Van Lines

Although AVL has higher reviews than other moving companies on this list, customers did sometimes have bad experiences with the brand. Some recent negative reviews highlighted issues with the quoting process as they were hit with higher-than-expected costs on moving day. Other customers explained several items were broken when the trailer arrived at their new home.

In transparency, American Van Lines earned an 8.7. The brand is forthcoming about their prices and has several different examples of moving quotes on their website, including moves to and from Miami. However, they don’t list additional fees on their website, so they did lose some points there. And while AVL has a quoting tool, it doesn’t work quickly. Like IVL, you’ll be asked to supply your contact information, and instead of receiving a quote after you use the tool, it says that a representative will be in touch. AVL did receive some points for their online and over-the-phone booking options, disclosure of their status as a carrier, posted customer service hours, and binding estimates. The company also offers GPS tracking on some of their trucks.

Best Full-Service Mover

International Van Lines

Get 10% Off Your Next Move

Moving quotes can be confusing. When you have additional fees for things like bulky items, stairs, and shuttles, it’s not always obvious how much you’re actually going to have to pay a mover on moving day. But International Van Lines’s emails do an excellent job of breaking down costs, moving day expectations, contract obligations, and more. No other company on this list matches the level of detail IVL goes into with their emails, though a couple come close.

Full-service moving is also included in all long-distance IVL quotes. This means they will handle all of the packing for you, and since it’s baked into their estimates, it’s usually at a lower cost compared to competitors. Plus, this service can really be a time-saver, especially if you’re dreading packing up all of your life’s belongings.

However, while there are benefits of having full-service included in your moving quote, it’s not for everyone. Not every customer will want to have their belongings packed up by strangers, and others may want to save cash by doing the work themselves. IVL’s representatives and website state that you’ll save little to no money by opting out of full-service with this brand, so IVL may not be the best option for everyone.

In addition, I’ve found IVL’s online tools to be lacking. Their online chat service doesn’t really answer questions you might have about your move, and responses are slow. In addition, their quick quote tool requires contact information, and even if you enter it, you won’t receive an estimate. Your details will be passed onto a representative who will then reach out to you about your moving quote.

International Van Lines earned a 9.3 overall, the highest on this list. They offer a majority of the services customers are looking for from their movers and have a solid reputation. Personally, I’ve found their website and emails to be stellar when it comes to getting information about your moves before you even reach out. IVL has numerous pages on their website that break down what to expect at every step, and their emailed quotes explain exactly what you’ll be paying, what they need from you, and how they can assist you going forward.

Another benefit of IVL is their full-service offerings, which is why they’re one of the top full-service movers —packing is included in a majority of their quotes. For homeowners in Florida who are busy with work, life, and the kids, this can be a huge time saver and a fantastic way to save some cash if you’re looking for full-service moving solutions. However, it’s a downside for those who don’t want someone else packing their items or don’t want to pay extra for the service. IVL even advises that you really won’t save much by forgoing the service unless you’re moving locally, which is based on an hourly rate rather than space used in the trailer.

On the other hand, IVL’s online tools for me leave a lot to be desired. I’ve found their online chat service to be slow, unhelpful, and unresponsive to even basic questions. Additionally, their quick quote tool is anything but quick. You’ll have to enter your contact information and wait for the brand to reach out to you about the next steps. If you’re calling, however, you shouldn’t run into these issues during your quoting experience.

International Van Lines earned a perfect 10 out of 10 for their basic services offerings. Their teams are equipped to handle local, long-distance, and interstate moves in Florida, as well as international moves to over 150 countries. So whether you’re moving from Orlando to Pensacola or Jacksonville to New York City, they have you covered. In fact, their corporate office is located right in Coral Springs, just north of Fort Lauderdale. Packing is also included in all of their long-distance quotes unless you choose to opt out of the service. Going with full-service packing can be an excellent way to save some cash and time if you don’t want to handle the packing yourself. Unpacking in your new home is available, but it costs extra. Loading, unloading, and 30 days of storage are included in all of IVL’s moving quotes.

A majority of International Van Lines’s moving quotes include full-service packing, disassembly and reassembly of basic furniture, loading, unloading, protective coverings for furniture, 30 days of storage, and basic liability at $0.60 per lb. per article. Unpacking, additional storage, debris removal, bulky item packing, piano handling, and shuttle services cost extra, but their emails do a fantastic job of explaining how much these services will cost you ahead of time. For those looking for full-service packing from their long-distance movers, IVL is one of the more cost-effective options. However, their website advises that local moving is quoted at an hourly rate rather than space used in the trailer, and self-packing can help you save money for these types of moves.

I contacted IVL about a move from Maybrook, NY, to Carrboro, NC, a distance of 573 miles. For a two-bedroom home move estimated at 3,682 lbs. and 526 cubic ft, I received the following quote:

  • Full-service option with packing: $4,000.52

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this article is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario from Maybrook, NY, to Carrboro, NC, for a single-family home, with a move date set eight weeks away. IVL offers discounts to seniors (15%) and military members (10 to 15%). In addition, full-packing is included in all of their long-distance moving quotes, something no other mover on this list does. If you were already looking into getting professionals to pack your items, this can be a fantastic way to save cash.

Today’s Homeowner Tips
Moving companies may require deposits in order to secure your moving trailer or container. However, in Florida, movers aren’t allowed to ask for more than 20% down. They’re also required to refund your deposit if you cancel your move within 48 hours of your scheduled move.

In customization, IVL fell just short of a perfect score due to the fact that they don’t offer home staging. However, they do offer many of the other services customers are looking for from their movers. Assembly and disassembly of basic furniture, packing materials, and basic valuation coverage at $0.60 per pound per article are included in all of their full-service quotes. Some packing materials cost extra, specifically for things like bulky furniture, antiques, fragile items, and other special belongings. Packing materials also won’t be included if you opt for self-pack. In addition, IVL specializes in car shipping, nationally and internationally, on enclosed trailers, open trailers, and containers for ocean freight. Custom crating and junk removal are available for additional fees through the brand.

IVL is only one of two movers on this list to receive a 10 in reputation (the other is American Van Lines). As of this writing, the brand has an A rating and a 3.47 on the BBB, a 4.1 on Trustpilot, and a 3.9 on Google, but only a 1.7 on Yelp. IVL is responsive to many positive and negative reviews on Google and Trustpilot, but many of the negative review responses on Google aren’t personalized, saying the same thing to the customer, no matter the situation. However, only a handful of moving companies I’ve secret shopped respond to this many reviews (both positive and negative), so it’s nice to see a mover more involved with the review process. Testimonials spoke of reassuring representatives, professional crews, and outstanding service from start to finish. Customers leaving 1-star reviews explained they experienced delayed deliveries, careless movers, and nonexistent customer service.

Most Common Praise for International Van Lines

Customers leaving positive reviews for IVL praised the customer service and professionalism of both the representatives of the brand and the crews. They found the rates to be affordable and accurate, too, which can be reassuring when some homeowners discover their moving costs increase on moving day.

Most Common Criticism for International Van Lines

One common complaint among 1-star reviews is the fact that IVL outsourced their move, and the customer was not alerted beforehand. These customers experienced problems with unprofessional crews and damaged items upon delivery.

IVL came in very high in transparency according to our criteria, earning an 8.7. Unlike many other movers, IVL lists sample pricing and additional fees on their website so customers can get a good idea of costs before they reach out to the brand. However, while they do have a quick quote feature on their website, it doesn’t actually deliver a quote after using it. Instead, you must enter your contact information in order to get a call back from a representative. They also lost some points due to the fact that GPS tracking isn’t available on all of their trucks. However, IVL earned points thanks to their posted customer service hours, binding estimates, disclosure of their status as a broker/carrier, and online and over-the-phone booking options.

Best Quoting Experience

Moving APT

3.9

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
Use Code APT23 For 20% Off

Out of the companies I’ve secret-shopped, Moving APT was the one that offered the most refreshing quoting experience. Many other movers kept me on the phone for over 40 minutes, required in-home or virtual assessments, or had me wait 24 hours to receive even a ballpark estimate. With Moving APT, I was on and off the phone in 10 minutes. Plus, if you don’t want to call, their online quoting tool doesn’t require your contact information to use.

Moving APT was also very generous with their discounts. If you use that quoting tool I just mentioned and supply your email, they’ll offer you a 15% discount on your estimate. I was personally offered a 5% coupon on the basic estimated price and fuel surcharge, as well as a three-day pickup window flexibility coupon.

The downside of Moving APT is the fact that they’re a moving broker. This means they won’t handle any portion of your actual move but instead partner you with one of their agents. They have a robust network of 2,500 movers, but this means you’re gambling with the mover you’re actually partnered with. This leaves customers with very mixed experiences.

Another aspect of Moving APT I didn’t personally like is their response to negative reviews on Google. The representatives handling the accounts actually argue with customers, claim the review is fake, or state they don’t know the client instead of offering them recourse or apologies.

This Miami-based mover offers all of the services and customization options customers are looking for from their movers, including home staging, a rarity I’ve found among companies. Moving APT also has a straightforward quoting process. Whether you opt to use their online quoting tool or call, you can walk away with an estimate in just a few minutes. When other companies keep you on the phone for 40 minutes or make you wait for an assessment to receive an estimate, MOVING APT’s simple process is a breath of fresh air.

Moving APT also offers plenty of discounts right off the bat. Their quick quote tool doesn’t require your contact information to use, but you’re invited to supply your email if you’d like to receive 15% off of your estimate. During my call, I was also offered a 5% coupon discount and pickup flexibility coupon, which cut thousands of dollars off of my quote.

However, Moving APT is a broker. Moving brokers outsource jobs to one of their partners. This allows them to offer the services homeowners are looking for, but it also means you could get paired with a less-than-ideal mover. Moving APT leans on this fact quite heavily when it comes to any negative Google reviews. If a customer leaves 1 star, the representative will often argue with the customer, state they’re just a broker, or simply claim the review is “fake.” I recommend researching the partner you’ll be working with before signing any contracts.

Moving APT and its partners offer all the basic services customers are looking for in a mover. They can handle local and long-distance moves in Florida, as well as interstate moves and international transport to 180 countries. Loading and unloading are included in all of their quotes, but customers can opt to pay a bit more and go with their Platinum Full Packing Service, which includes packing, packing materials, and crating. Unpacking is also available for an additional fee. One month of storage is included in their quotes, but since they work with partners, it’s not immediately clear how your items will be cared for in storage. I recommend letting Moving APT know during the quoting process what you need out of their storage solutions so you are paired with the right partner for your move.

Standard Full Service Moves with Moving APT include loading, unloading, disassembly, and reassembly of standard furniture pieces, blanket wrapping for furniture, basic limited liability protection of $0.60 per pound per article, and one month of free storage. Platinum Full Packing Service moves include all of the services that come with Standard, as well as packing materials, packing, and crating of breakable items. They do note you could be charged extra if you have items that need special care, such as heavy objects, custom-built furniture, particle board furniture, and oddly shaped property.

During my call with Moving APT, I requested a quote for a 573-mile move between Maybrook, NY, and Carrboro, NC. The representative estimated I would be moving 5,274 lbs worth of belongings, and I was quoted:

  • Standard Full Service move: $2,700
  • Platinum Full Packing Service (without unpacking): $3,700
  • Platinum Full Packing Service with full value protection (without unpacking): $4,522.64

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this article is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario from Maybrook, NY, to Carrboro, NC, for a single-family home, with a move date set eight weeks away. Moving APT offers customers who use their quick quote tool 15% off their moving estimate if they supply their email. I was also offered 5% off the basic estimate price and fuel costs, as well as a three-day pickup window flexibility coupon. If you don’t have to move on a specific date, the flexibility coupon could shave over a thousand dollars off of your moving cost.

Moving APT is the only mover on this list who received a perfect 10 in customization, as they have partners that offer home staging. Home staging can help you sell your home for more money and attract more buyers. Moving APT and their agents also offer basic valuation coverage, full value protection, piano moving, car shipping, antique moving, junk removal, custom crating, and special item moving. Packing materials are included in their Platinum Full Packing Service quotes, but their emailed estimates also include a handy link to their available moving boxes, kits, and supplies if you’d like to pack your own items. Assembly and disassembly of standard furniture pieces are included in all of their quotes. Customization options will vary between Moving APT’s various partners, so it’s important to be up-front about what you need during your move so they can pair you with the right agent.

Moving APT came in at only a 7.8 for reputation. As of this writing, they have a B+ rating on the BBB, and they haven’t claimed their Trustpilot profile. Reviews on the BBB and Google are mixed, and most reviews on Yelp are just a single star. Moving APT is responsive to many positive and negative reviews on Google, but their responses to 1-star reviews aren’t the kindest.

Most other moving companies who respond to negative reviews will apologize and invite the customer to reach out to the brand. In contrast, the representatives who handle Moving APT’s Google Business Profile tend to argue with the client, claim it’s a fake review, or state that they’re a booking agent, not the mover, offering very little recourse or even apologies to the customer. For those who have problems during their move, I suggest first reaching out to the partner you worked with to get a resolution rather than contacting Moving APT.

Most Common Praise for Moving APT

5-star reviews talked about responsive and kind representatives from Moving APT who were quick to answer any questions. The crews they were partnered with were also efficient and professional, even in the face of issues like bad weather. Others praised the communication from start to finish.

Most Common Criticism for Moving APT

Working with a moving broker means you’ll be paired with one of their agents, and not all agents will offer top tier service. Customers leaving negative reviews for Moving APT claimed the crews they were partnered with were careless and unprofessional and that  many of their items arrived damaged.

Moving APT is the lowest on this list for transparency, receiving just a 5.3. The company is a moving broker and does disclose this status, but this means they’re unable to list sample prices or additional fees on their website as these costs will vary quite a bit between their partners. However, their quick quote tool is actually pretty quick, something I don’t see on a lot of movers’ websites. You can enter basic information about your move and receive a ballpark estimate without having to give your phone number or email. If you choose to, entering your email will actually net you a 15% discount on your quote. Moving APT also lost points as their partners don’t always offer GPS tracking, and they don’t have posted customer service hours. They did receive some points for their online and over-the-phone booking solutions as well as their binding estimates.

JK Moving Services

4.2

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:

When it comes to information about your move and general moving advice, JK Moving Services has you covered. Their website goes into depth about their various services and solutions, from long-distance moves to storage and car shipping to custom crating. Customers can determine if JK Moving meets their needs simply by starting at the website, and the same can’t be said about a lot of other movers.

Their emails are also extremely informative. The representatives send over PDFs about JK Moving’s financing options, services, storage, packing advice, and more. They’ll even send over a few videos that show why this brand is a good pick for you. JK Moving keeps their customers well informed, and I really appreciated that.

There’s no getting around it: JK Moving Services is expensive compared to the competition. Their quotes are more than double what some of the other movers’ estimates were for comparable moves. Many customers even cite this high cost in their reviews. JK Moving isn’t for homeowners who want to move on a budget.

Also worth noting is that JK Moving isn’t a local mover in Florida. If you’re just moving from Pensacola to Milton or Tampa to St. Petersburg, you’ll have to opt for another brand. This mover only handles local moves in Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. and mainly operates as a long-distance moving company.

According to what we look for in a mover, JK Moving Services earned an 8.4 overall. This mover offers most of the services homeowners are going to need during the move, but it’s important to note that they don’t handle local moves within the state of Florida. If you’re moving 400 miles within Florida, I recommend going with one of the other top moving companies in the state. However, they’re able to handle long-distance, interstate, and international moves.

What I personally love about JK Moving Services is the abundance of information they provide their customers. Their website answers many of the pressing questions homeowners have about various moving services and how JK Moving can assist them. In fact, they just updated their website to be even more user-friendly. The emails from the moving consultants are also informative, full of PDFs and videos explaining how you can benefit by going with this brand.

But, it’s important to note that JK Moving is expensive. The ballpark estimate I received for a comparable move was more than double the quotes I received from competitors. In fact, JK Moving’s self-packing quote is nearly three times more expensive than Moving Apt’s self-packing estimate. If you’re on a budget, this brand may not be the best option for you.

JK Moving Services received a 10 in basic services. While the company does offer local moving, they don’t offer local moving within Florida. A long-distance move is usually considered 400 miles or more, so if you’re staying within Florida and you’re moving less than 400 miles away, you’re going to have to go with a competitor. JK Moving can, however, handle long-distance, interstate, and international moves to over 170 countries. Loading and unloading are included in all of their free quotes, but customers can opt to go with self-pack, fragile-only packing, full-service packing, and unpacking if needed. Their storage solutions come with video surveillance, motion sensors, climate-control options, and fire suppression systems.

Cost

JK Moving Services is by far the most expensive mover on this list. However, they’re backed by a wealth of services and a strong reputation, and many customers leaving positive reviews state they’re worth the extra cost. There’s no denying, though, that they’re two to three times more expensive than the competition. JK Moving also won’t give you a binding estimate until you complete their virtual survey and submit 30 to 60 videos of your belongings to be moved, so the quoting process can take a bit.

I requested information about a move between Mobile, AL, and Dallas, TX, a distance of 588 miles. The move was estimated at 6,050 lbs and quoted at:

  • Self-service option: $7,522
  • Full-service option: $9,388

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this article is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario from Mobile, AL, to Dallas, TX, for a single-family home, with a move date set eight weeks away. Please be aware that these estimates may vary depending on factors such as additional services required and market fluctuations. The cost data presented was accurate at the time of writing.

Available Discounts

JK Moving Services offers a 2% discount to customers who are moving into new Brookfield Residential homes and state they have “special offers” for Brookfield customers, but they don’t explain what those deals are. Unlike other moving companies, JK Moving works with Enhancify to offer financing to make your move more affordable. The promotional period starts at 0% APR if approved.

Since they don’t offer home staging, JK Moving Services received a 9 out of 10 for customization. The brand offers packing supplies to all customers, whether you go with self-pack or full-service, and all clients will receive up to 20 free used boxes. Their crews are also equipped to handle piano moving, assembly and disassembly of furniture, custom crating, antique moving, special item moving, and junk removal, though as a broker/carrier, some of their customization options will be handled by third-party partners. For example, car shipping is handled through their partner McCollister’s Auto Logistics. However, JK Moving does provide vehicle storage as well, something I haven’t seen other brands offering.

All full-service moving companies in the United States are required to offer minimum valuation coverage of $0.60 per lb per item. If you require more insurance, such as full value protection, make sure to let the mover know ahead of time, as this could affect your moving quote.

JK Moving Services received a 9 in reputation, losing a point due to their lower score on Trustpilot as of this writing. The review score on Google is high at 4.5, but reviews on other trusted review sites, including the BBB, are more mixed. Customers who had positive experiences cited excellent service from representatives, crews, and drivers. One customer on Google even explained they were moving from Orlando, FL, to Philadelphia, PA, and their entire move was “easy and seamless.” Negative reviews often have pictures of items that were damaged during moves with JK Moving, however. Representatives for the brand are responsive to both positive and negative reviews on Yelp and Google.

Most Common Praise for JK Moving Services

Most customers leaving positive reviews praised the customer service from everyone who represented the company. Crews were efficient and careful, representatives were responsive, and drivers were polite. Good communication is often cited by customers, too.

Most Common Criticism for JK Moving Services

Broken property is the most common criticism among 1-star reviews for JK Moving Services. Many customers who were unhappy with their service even posted pictures of their broken items, smashed boxes, and damaged furniture.

JK Moving Services’s lowest score is in transparency at just 6.3 out of 10. The company doesn’t highlight sample prices or additional fees on their website, and while they have a quick quote tool, it doesn’t deliver estimates after you use it. It simply asks for your contact information and lets you know a representative will reach out shortly. In my experience, this takes about 24 hours. JK Moving also doesn’t explain that they’re a broker/carrier, which means they outsource some work to their partner companies. The brand did get some points, however, for its GPS tracking availability on some trucks, posted customer service hours, online and over-the-phone booking options, and binding estimates.

Best Overall Container Service

U-Pack

3.5

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
$25 Off With Code BLOG25

Like Moving APT, U-Pack has a very straightforward quoting process. You can use their online tool or give them a call to detail what you need to have moved, and they will give you recommendations on how much space you need in one of their trailers or how many containers you will require. Their online quoting tool doesn’t require contact information either.

U-Pack also has a shorter delivery time than most other movers. Full-service movers state that long-distance moves will be delivered within 21 days. U-Pack, however, states that belongings will be delivered between four and six days. The exact time frame depends on when you’re moving and where you’re moving to, but either way, it’s a much shorter delivery window compared to competitors.

The nature of U-Pack isn’t going to be a good choice for every homeowner and tenant in Florida. It’s a self-service brand, which means you’re going to be doing the heavy lifting yourself, from packing to unpacking and loading to unloading. While you can hire a third party to tackle the packing for you, this might not make sense cost-wise. You’d have to do the math and compare your options to find out.

As a self-service company, they also don’t offer much in the way of insurance. While other brands offer basic valuation coverage, U-Pack only gives customers carrier negligence liability coverage and catastrophic liability coverage. This doesn’t cover damages to property that are due to improper packing.

U-Pack is a self-service moving company and our choice for “best overall container service.” Self-service means they’ll handle the transport for you, but everything else in regard to moving is handled by the customer. This can be a good way to save money on your move, but it’s not going to be a viable option for everyone in Florida. Customers have the option of hiring a third-party vendor through U-Pack or choosing one of their own for packing, unpacking, loading, and unloading, but at that point, it may be more cost-effective to hire a full-service mover instead.

U-Pack has an easy quoting process. Customers can choose to call or use the free online quote tool to get an estimate. If you end up using more or less space than you anticipated, your cost can be adjusted as necessary. The online quoting tool also makes it simple to see containers (known as ReloCubes) versus trailers, how much space you’ll need on each, and the cost differences between the two options. You can then book right online once you determine the best solution for your moving needs.

This self-service brand also has a much shorter delivery timeframe than other movers on this list. While many companies state you’ll receive your belongings in 21 days or fewer, U-Pack offers container and trailer delivery in less than a week. If you want your items quickly, this can be a fantastic resource. However, it’s important to note that U-Pack only offers limited insurance options to customers.

With nine offices in Florida, U-Pack is able to assist its customers no matter where they are in the state. They’re located in Pensacola, Jacksonville, Ocala, Orlando, Tampa, Bradenton, Fort Myers, Delray Beach, and Miami. The self-service brand handles local, long-distance, and interstate moving but doesn’t offer international moving solutions at this time. Packing, unpacking, loading, and unloading are generally done by the customer, but clients can request a third party to complete the heavy lifting through U-Pack. The company also offers easy-to-use storage options in most service areas. Customers can choose to leave their belongings in ReloCubes for as long as they need or for up to 120 days on trailers.

Cost

Costs with U-Pack are very straightforward. Customers pay for the space they use on a U-Pack trailer or for the number of ReloCubes they need. If you end up using more or less space on the trailer, your price can be adjusted. Their online tool also breaks down the cost differences between trailers and ReloCubes and advises you on how many containers they’d think you’d need if you decide to go with the ReloCubes. For my secret shopping between Mobile, AL, and Dallas, TX, it was recommended that I use a trailer as I would need at least two ReloCubes for a two-bedroom home. The time of year can affect prices as well as delivery times.

For a long-distance move between Mobile, AL, and Dallas, TX, I was quoted:

  • 14 feet of space on a trailer: $2,166

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this article is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario from Mobile, AL, to Dallas, TX, for a single-family home, with a move date set eight weeks away. U-Pack’s online quoting tool makes it easy to compare trailers versus Relocubes and choose the best option for your needs and budget. While the resource doesn’t require your email, you can supply it after you get an estimate if you’d like to receive emails about price reductions and special offers for your move.

U-Pack’s lowest score is in customization — just a 5 out of 10. As a self-service mover, they simply don’t offer the same number of solutions full-service movers do. They specifically don’t offer custom crating, home staging, or car shipping, but they can help you move a motorcycle. Their options for assembly and disassembly of furniture, piano moving, junk removal, and antique moving are limited. This may also not be the best brand if you’re moving antiques or priceless items. While they do offer valuation coverage, it’s only carrier negligence liability coverage and catastrophic liability coverage. These plans won’t cover you if your items are damaged during the move due to improper packing. Packing materials can be purchased through U-Pack’s partner on their website.

U-Pack came in at an 8 for reputation. The company has an A+ rating on the BBB but a poor rating on Trustpilot (only 2.6 as of this writing). However, on other trusted review sites, review numbers are high, with a 4.39 on the BBB, a 4.5 on Google, and a 4.5 on Yelp for their Orlando office. If you’re moving into or from another area of Florida, you should check the reviews of your local office. Customers often praise helpful representatives, reasonable prices, and friendly drivers. Many also stated that their containers arrived faster than they expected. Those leaving negative reviews explained that there was confusion over pricing and container delivery, and items were broken when the container arrived. U-Pack’s representatives are responsive to both positive and negative reviews on Google, Trustpilot, and the BBB.

Most Common Praise for U-Pack

Customers who had positive experiences with U-Pack explained that the entire move was easy and seamless from start to finish. They simply loaded up the container, and it arrived at their new location ahead of schedule. When packing and loading services were needed, customers said the third-party movers were fantastic.

Most Common Criticism for U-Pack

Common criticism around U-Pack involves communication. 1-star reviews often detailed higher-than-expected costs on moving day, delayed deliveries, and poor updates regarding their items during the move. Some customers also claimed that most of their belongings were damaged.

U-Pack received an 8 in transparency based on what we look for in movers. The brand does have sample pricing available on their website but doesn’t highlight additional fees. However, as a self-service company, there are very few additional fees that could be added to your quote. If you opt for their packing, unpacking, loading, and unloading services, you will be partnered with a third-party company that will explain the costs to you ahead of time. U-Pack also has a fantastic quote feature on their website that gives you the exact same information you would get if you called to talk to a representative. It doesn’t require your email or phone number to use, but you can get discounts sent to your inbox if you choose to give them your email. U-Pack doesn’t have customer service hours highlighted on their website, but they do have a handy tool that explains how many representatives are available to chat at any given time. The self-service company also received some points due to their online and over-the-phone booking, disclosure of their status as a carrier, and binding estimate availability.

What To Look for in a Reputable Moving Company in Florida

All movers that operate within Florida are required to register with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) and renew their registration every two years. Local, municipal, and county licenses may also be needed depending on where the mover is located within the state. Movers also can’t request a deposit larger than 20% in the state of Florida.

In addition, moving companies must adhere to federal regulations. For example, they must be registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), have a USDOT number, and give you a copy of the “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Movebooklet ahead of your move. Customers should also look at moving companies’ reviews, BBB ratings, and insurance before signing a contract.

How To Avoid Moving Scams in Florida

In 2023, out of the 7,647 complaints filed with the FMCSA, 3,833 of them were for moving companies based in Florida. Common scams within the state include hostage loads (where the company holds your items for ransom), mover fraud (where the mover is posing as a real company, and bait and switch (where the costs suddenly become higher on moving day). If you believe you’ve been the victim of a moving scam, you should contact the Florida Attorney General’s Office.

To keep an eye out for moving scams in Florida, you should:

  • Compare costs
    • If a moving quote seems too good to be true, it probably is. Moving companies may lowball you to get your business, only to increase your prices on moving day.
  • Check reviews
    • Scam companies will often have little to no reviews online. Checking trusted review sites and ratings on BBB can give you a clearer idea of the mover’s history and experience.
  • Review their registrations
    • All movers must be registered with the FMCSA and FDACS in Florida. Their registration will detail whether they’re a carrier, broker/carrier, or a moving broker.
  • Don’t place more than 20% down
    • It is against Florida law for movers to require more than 20% down for a move. If the moving company requests 50% or more, it could be a sign of a scam.

Florida Moving Company News

A bill could change how quotes are delivered by moving brokers in the state of Florida in 2024. Although it was struck down in 2023, it was reintroduced in early 2024. If passed, it would ban moving brokers from providing estimates directly to customers, require them to identify themselves as brokers, and require them to provide a complete list of movers that they partner with.

The aim of this bill is to reduce the number of moving scams occurring in the state. Florida is a hotbed for moving scams due to the influx of people in recent years, and many customers are finding themselves the target of hostage loads and bait and switches.
