If you’re planning a move to Michigan, you might be pleased to know that it’s one of the states that will actually pay you to move there. In an attempt to draw more people to the southwest region of The Great Lakes State, the Move to Michigan program offers $10,000 to $15,000 to those willing to relocate there, along with benefits like rail passes, access to co-working spaces, athletic clubs, and more. With beautiful beaches, quaint coastal towns, and a 90-minute commute to Chicago, it sounds like a solid move.

Regardless of whether you’re moving to, from, or within Michigan, and if you’re hoping to DIY your move or outsource the whole thing, finding the right moving partner is essential. In this review, I’ve used Today’s Homeowner’s rigorous methodology to score popular companies in categories like cost, customization, and reputation, and I’ve compiled a list of the four  best moving companies in Michigan. I also included sample pricing for a 760-mile move (the distance between Detroit and Kansas City) to give you a realistic idea of pricing for each company. Let’s do a deep dive into four excellent movers and see what they have to offer Michiganders and those hoping to relocate to this beautiful state.

Top 4 Michigan Moving Companies

American Van Lines: Most Transparent Pricing
Highlights
  • If moving to, from, or within Michigan, I recommend Moving APT. With a network of 2,500 moving partners, this broker offers a wide range of moving services at affordable rates. If you’re hesitant to use a broker, consider instead a carrier like Safeway Moving, which performs its own moves with similar offerings at similar prices.
  • The four companies reviewed here are all excellent movers, but each has their limitations. American Van Lines only operates in the lower 48, Safeway Moving and JK Moving Services lack local moving services in Michigan, and Interstate Moving & Relocation Group (IMRG) doesn’t offer international moving services.
  • It’s also important to find out if your favorite Michigan company is a carrier, broker, or both. As mentioned, carriers perform their own moves, which limits their geographic range and services offered. Brokers, on the other hand, like IMRG, have extensive networks and service ranges, but outsource all moves to smaller companies that may or may not uphold IMRG’s values and commitment to quality. In this article, you’ll find a mix of both brokers and carriers. It’s important to find the best fit for you.

My Expert Recommendation

Whether you’re moving overseas or locally in Michigan, my top recommendation goes to Moving APT. Thanks to an extensive network of 2,500 partners, this broker offers a full range of services across a wide geographic area — 50 states and 180 countries — with rare moving industry perks like price matching and home staging. JK Moving is another mover on this list to offer home staging, but at much steeper prices. Moving APT offers competitive prices, and the price-matching policy adds an extra layer of trust and transparency.

If you’re hesitant to trust a broker with your move, Safeway Moving offers an excellent alternative. This carrier doesn’t outsource moves, so you won’t get any big surprises on moving day. Safeway uses its own moving trucks while offering the benefit of flat-rate pricing and affordable full-service packages.

Today’s Homeowner Tips

Whether you’re moving overseas or locally in Michigan, my top recommendation goes to Moving APT.

Michigan Moving Companies I Didn’t Include

There are a lot of great moving companies in Michigan, and two solid movers that didn’t make the cut for this list are U-Pack and North American Van Lines. While both have strong reviews and offer reliable services, they have some significant limitations. U-Pack is a great self-service option for moving, but the mover has few customization options and little to offer besides DIY moving services. It’s not a suitable option if you’re hoping to outsource most of your move. North American offers industry-standard basic services, but scores lower than competitors in categories such as transparency, and doesn’t offer sample quotes over the phone, which makes it hard to quickly shop around for quotes to compare movers.

Our Reviews of the Best Moving Companies in Michigan

Most Transparent Pricing

American Van Lines

4.0

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
Price Matching Available

We designated American Van Lines (AVL) as the Michigan mover with the most transparent pricing, especially noting that sample pricing and special offers are prominently displayed on AVL’s website.  American’s website provides an abundance of information for customers, featuring city-specific blog posts and detailed insights into services, costs, and expertise.  American also offers a quick quote feature that is fairly accurate.

Like Safeway Moving, American ensures reliability and top-notch service by operating as a carrier with its own trucks, using experienced and thoroughly vetted moving crews. The company’s commitment to quality extends to white-glove treatment for pianos and antiques, along with luxury services like climate-controlled personal storage vaults, catering to the needs of even the most discerning customers. If you’re a collector of fine art, this is the mover for you — AVL has a long track record of using highly skilled crews to move individual art pieces as well as entire collections.

While American Van Lines has great reviews and a long history in the moving industry, this company does have some limitations compared to other movers in Michigan. Notably, American doesn’t offer services such as car shipping, home staging, or junk removal. While they excel in domestic moves within the continental United States, you’ll find better options with an international provider if you’re planning a move to a distant state or a foreign country. Additionally, it’s worth noting that American typically requires a higher up-front deposit — usually around 50% — to secure your moving date and time. If you prioritize flexibility or require a broader range of services, check out Moving APT.

If you’re moving long-distance and seeking a versatile moving company with transparent pricing in The Wolverine state, American Van Lines could be the perfect fit for you. We awarded American a solid overall score of 8.5 thanks to factors such as sample pricing, reliable service, an A+ rating on BBB, and outstanding reviews. With a detailed website and accurate sample quotes, American makes it easy to compare them quickly to other companies and make an informed choice. It’s one of the best options when it comes to straightforward moves within the U.S. mainland, but remember that they don’t offer services like in-house junk removal or car shipping, and they don’t operate beyond the lower 48 states. Like Safeway Moving, AVL lacks local moving services in Michigan.

American Van Lines earned a 9 out of 10 in this category for its comprehensive range of moving services, including higher-end offerings like climate-controlled storage vaults and specialized solutions for valuables. If they offered international moving services, they’d have received a perfect score in this category. However, it’s important to note that local moves aren’t offered in Michigan — only in Florida, Texas, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Despite these limitations, American remains a top choice for Michiganders embarking on long-distance and interstate moves, with high-quality standard solutions like packing, unpacking, loading, unloading, and secure storage.

I had a positive and seamless experience getting a quote from American Van Lines, and my full-service quote included 50 boxes and 30 days of free storage, as well as disassembly and reassembly, padding and wrapping, and loading and unloading. The quote for my two-bedroom, 760-mile move was as follows:

  • Packing services only: $1,355
  • Packing without mattress and TV boxes: $1,052
  • Transportation without packing: $4,302
  • Full service (transportation with packing): $5,455

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this article is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario for a 760-mile move for a single-family home, with a move date set eight weeks away. Please be aware that these estimates may vary depending on factors such as additional services required and market fluctuations. The cost data presented was accurate at the time of writing.

Available Discounts

American Van Lines provides city-specific promotions as well as seasonal offers, such as an annual spring promotion, so make sure to ask about these deals when reaching out to them. If you’re opting for self-packing, make sure to compare your chosen moving company with local stores regarding the cost of packing materials. My AVL representative let me know that my mattress and TV boxes alone would run me around $300.

We gave American Van Lines a 7 out of 10 for its customization options, and with stronger scores in other categories, this is definitely the main area where this mover is lacking. Although American does offer special services like piano and antique moving, they don’t offer junk removal, car shipping, and home staging. If you want a wider range of services, including home staging, be sure to check out Moving APT.

American Van Lines received a full score in this category, with a great reputation, mostly positive reviews across platforms, and an A+ rating on BBB. Reviews highlight stellar customer service and on-time deliveries. While negative reviews do exist and mention unexpected costs and unreliable service, feedback is overwhelmingly positive. As I mentioned for other companies, a low score on Yelp is standard for the moving industry.

Most Common Praise for American Van Lines

Happy American Van Lines customers highlight its outstanding communication, professionalism, and flexibility. Positive reviews mention reliable support throughout the moving process, and the company’s commitment to maintaining high service standards is shown by actively addressing customer feedback. AVL representatives are praised for their helpfulness and efficiency, with mentions of prompt responses to inquiries and seamless coordination on moving day.

Most Common Criticism for American Van Lines

Criticism is overwhelmingly directed at customer service, highlighting inconsistent support, a lack of clear communication around pricing, and carelessness when handling items. Unhappy customers express frustration over carelessness and damaged shipments.

American Van Lines stands out for its commitment to transparent pricing, offering sample pricing along with detailed breakdowns in estimates. This accessibility makes it easy for potential customers to get estimates quickly and efficiently. AVL loses points in this category for the lack of posted customer service hours and clearly listed additional fees on the website, but we gave this company a solid category score of 8.7, as well as the title “Most Transparent Pricing.”

Best Flat-rate Pricing

Safeway Moving

4.1

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
No current offers available.

Compared to other Michigan moving companies, Safeway Moving stands out for their flat-rate pricing model, with estimates based on the space your items take up in the truck rather than how much they weigh. This approach reduces guesswork and potential for additional fees, offering customers transparency and accuracy in their quotes and minimizing surprises on moving day. Provided you’re prepared with a detailed inventory list and measurements during the quoting process, you can expect more precise estimates from Safeway  compared to the weight-based systems used by other movers. That’s why we awarded this moving company the title of “Best Flat-Rate Pricing.”

As a carrier, Safeway ensures reliability and consistency by handling its own moves rather than brokering them out. This provides peace of mind for customers wary of dealing with brokers or carriers/brokers. Additionally, Safeway’s commitment to quality includes climate-controlled trucks and specialized protection for items like pianos or art, making it an excellent choice for those with unique moving needs requiring extra care and attention.

Safeway’s main drawback is its limited local moving options. Like American Van Lines, this provider doesn’t cater to local moves in Michigan, so you’re better off looking at Moving APT if you’re moving locally. A second flaw is the poorly designed website. Unlike those of competitors, Safeway’s website lacks essential features and information, such as an FAQ section, and provides only minimal insight into services offered. This lack of user-friendly resources may deter potential customers who seek comprehensive information and leave thinking Safeway doesn’t have much to offer, which is unfortunate.

Despite operating as a carrier, Safeway only offers GPS tracking on select trucks, requiring manual tracking for trucks that don’t have it. If in-house tracking is a priority for you, consider exploring alternatives like American Van Lines or JK Moving Services.

Safeway Moving streamlines the moving process from the start, providing detailed explanations of their flat-rate pricing and accepting moving checklists via email or video. However, in-depth information regarding their services and pricing in Michigan isn’t readily available on their website. Note the lack of reliable GPS tracking despite Safeway’s carrier status as well. It’s inconvenient to have to call the truck driver directly for updates on the shipment or estimated arrival times.

If you’re looking for a reliable mover to help move your piano or antiques, Safeway remains a top choice. If you’re moving individual art pieces or an art collection, check out American Van Lines, which has similar offerings along with highly vetted and trained crews for moving valuables. Remember, however, that both movers lack local moving services in Michigan.

As I mentioned previously, Safeway Moving doesn’t offer local moving services in Michigan, so if you’re moving locally within The Great Lakes State, you should consider Moving APT. If you’re undertaking a long-distance or international move, Safeway is a reliable option, offering a free storage option.. Safeway covers a wide range of moving needs, earning them an 8 out of 10 score in this category.

Getting a quote from Safeway was easy. The estimate below includes assembly and disassembly, 30 days of free storage, a $250 first-time-customer discount, basic packing materials, and origin and destination fees. It also includes fuel surcharges and basic insurance coverage with a maximum cargo protection of $10,000. My TV, mattress, and treadmill boxes alone would cost me around $425, so as always, I recommend comparing the price of packing materials from your chosen provider with those at your local stores.

For my two-bedroom, 760-mile move, the quote I received from Safeway was as follows:

  • Self-packing option: $3,733
  • Full-service option: $4,452
  • Estimated 550 cubic feet (3,850 lbs)

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this article is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario for a 760-mile move for a single-family home, with a move date set eight weeks away. Please be aware that these estimates may vary depending on factors such as additional services required and market fluctuations. The cost data presented was accurate at the time of writing.

Available Discounts

Safeway’s otherwise-lacking website does mention discounts for a wide range of groups, including veterans, seniors, students, teachers, and first responders. If Safeway is a top choice for your move, be sure to plan ahead so you can take advantage of their standard discount for bookings made more than thirty days in advance. As always, ask your representative about any additional discounts — you should at least be able to get a first-time customer discount if you haven’t used Safeway before.

Safeway Moving earned a solid 9 out of 10 in this category for offering most of the common customization options other than home staging. While it’s not obvious from looking at their website, Safeway provides a comprehensive range of services essential for any Michigan move, including car shipping and custom crating. Standard furniture assembly and disassembly are included in the pricing, and packing materials can be purchased if needed. Additionally, Safeway’s piano moving service stands out for its use of climate-controlled trucks, with an added-protection option for valuable instruments. Every move includes basic valuation coverage at $0.60 per lb. with a maximum cargo protection of $10,000.

While Safeway Moving’s review site ratings are fairly high, the company’s small size makes their reputation hard to nail down when compared to those of larger, more established movers. We gave Safeway a strong 9 out of 10 in this category, supported by a B-rating on BBB and generally positive reviews across various platforms. It’s worth noting that none of the movers on this list boast very good Yelp ratings — suggesting potential limitations or biases within the platform itself rather than reflecting the quality of the companies reviewed there.

Most Common Praise for Safeway Moving

Consistent praise from customers mentions Safeway’s outstanding customer service, with reviewers highlighting the company’s commitment to providing care and attention to detail throughout the moving process. Furthermore, positive feedback often mentions unexpected discounts, helpful support during the quoting process, and the ability to reach customer support even outside of regular posted hours.

Most Common Criticism for Safeway Moving

Criticism aimed at Safeway tends to involve handling and shipping concerns attributed to specific crews. Unhappy customers cite scratched or broken furniture and damaged boxes as problem areas. In the broader spectrum of reviews, these instances are pretty few and far between, but it’s worth noting that there are several complaints about moves being outsourced — despite Safeway’s claim of operating solely as a carrier. These issues underscore the importance of discussing valuation coverage options with your representative to ensure adequate protection against potential loss or damage during the shipping process.

We gave Safeway Moving a 7 for transparency, with points lost for a lack of sample pricing on their website and limited GPS tracking availability (tracking isn’t guaranteed at the time of booking and varies among trucks). While Safeway does provide a quick quote feature online, getting a more accurate quote might entail a phone call. Safeway wins a point for maintaining transparency about being a carrier rather than a broker, although some customers have reported instances of outsourced work — something that’s definitely worth noting.

Best Quoting Experience

Moving APT

3.9

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
Use Code APT23 For 20% Off

As a broker with one of the largest networks in the industry, Moving APT offers a comprehensive range of services to customers in Michigan, leveraging its network to negotiate the most competitive prices among carriers. With over twenty years of experience, the company has reliability, expertise, and a track record of success. Moving APT’s straightforward quoting process and detailed follow-up emails stand in stark contrast to the lengthy calls and email exchanges required by many other companies I’ve contacted.

My Moving APT representative let me know they have a price-matching policy, and I love this because it truly shows the company’s dedication to transparent and affordable services. I also want to highlight that Moving APT is one of two movers on our list to offer home staging — an invaluable service for many individuals, families, and those with disabilities. Only JK Moving Services also offers this perk, but it’s a significantly more expensive option. Whether home staging is a necessity or simply an attractive option to alleviate your moving burden, I recommend Moving APT to anyone looking for this service.

Working with a broker has its pros and cons — while Moving APT might be able to negotiate the best price for you, the actual service quality may vary as it hinges largely on the moving partner chosen to handle your move. This inconsistency — a prevalent problem among brokers — can manifest in communication issues and unexpected changes to estimates, underscoring the importance of understanding this dynamic if you’re considering using a broker for your move. Similar to Safeway Moving, Moving APT’s website lacks user-friendliness, and while it contains a lot of helpful information, it’s too complex and confusing to navigate.

Thanks to having one of the largest networks of moving partners, Moving APT stands out among Michigan moving companies by offering a wide range of services, including the unique feature of home staging. If you’re considering going with a broker, Moving APT is a reliable choice with a long history and solid reviews, capable of addressing various specialized moving needs.

Moving APT’s website leaves a lot to be desired, but this mover makes up for it with a quick and painless quoting process. Moving APT’s GPS tracking services are limited as the company’s a broker, but, as always, it’s worth asking your representative if you can opt to be matched with a company that offers it. Moving APT is my top recommendation if you prioritize home staging.

Earning a perfect category score thanks to an extensive range of services, Moving APT offers everything from local moving to storage solutions. For both standard and platinum moves, Moving APT provides industry-standard limited liability protection at $0.60 per pound of goods, but customers also have the option to increase their coverage with the full value protection plan, which includes a $500 deductible. This is something I recommend considering if you’re going with a broker, as it will help keep you protected in case you’re matched with a moving partner that doesn’t uphold Moving APT’s values or commitment to service quality.

As of this writing, Moving APT offers all of the services below in Michigan:

If you don’t take advantage of the same-day booking discount, Moving APT basic service rates are a little higher than the industry average, but it’s still an affordable moving option.. One of their main selling points is the price-matching policy — offering to match any other quote provided by a reputable mover. They offered me 30 days of free storage if I chose the full-service option, which is similar to Safeway. My representative sent me a thorough checklist and quote, making it easy to compare to other companies. Note that booking on the same day of my call would save me a significant $1,356, but that Moving APT’s packing services are expensive if you don’t opt for full service and book on the same day. Without the same-day discount, packing alone would cost me around $2,000.

Moving APT provided the following quote for moving my two-bedroom house a distance of 760 miles:

  • Packing services only: $2,047
  • Transportation without packing: $6,000
  • Transportation with packing: $7,856
  • Transportation with packing using a same-day booking discount: $6,500

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this article is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario of 760 miles for a single-family home with a move date set eight weeks away. Please be aware that these estimates may vary depending on factors such as additional services required and market fluctuations. The cost data presented was accurate at the time of writing.

Available Discounts

Moving APT provides discretionary discounts for various groups including seniors, military personnel, and early bookers, with the best savings achieved by booking at least two months in advance. I also discovered an easy but significant 15% discount for lead generation (providing your name and email after using their quick quote tool), and a flex coupon for those with a three-day moving window. I appreciate these discounts as they’re beneficial to both the company and its customers.

Moving APT stands out for its extensive range of options, including the rare service of home staging. Moving APT also sells packing materials and provides custom crating, but it’s important to note that these can get pricey fast. Even if this mover’s prices are affordable, I’d consider self-packing or at least purchasing packing materials elsewhere.

Home staging is the practice of furnishing and styling a property to make it stand out in a competitive market. Stagers usually provide cleaning, bring in new decor, and use different strategies to make your property appealing to the highest number of potential buyers. Staged homes tend to sell faster and for more.

Moving APT lacks a Trustpilot rating and has a low Yelp score, but reviews on other platforms are generally positive, mentioning in particular  excellent customer service and reliability. With a B+ on BBB and a 7.8/10 rating from us, APT has a solid reputation.

Most Common Praise for Moving APT

Moving APT’s commitment to high standards of professionalism is clear from reading their reviews. From prompt responses to inquiries, to professionalism and attention to detail both over the phone and on site, customers praise this provider’s stellar customer service.

Most Common Criticism for Moving APT

From negative reviews, it’s clear that a lot of dissatisfaction with Moving APT comes from a lack of understanding of the logistical complexities and regulations involved in the moving process, so it would be beneficial for Moving APT if they were more clear about the process and its moving parts in the initial steps. With a network of over 2,500 partners, the unpredictability of which team will show up on moving day can definitely introduce an element of uncertainty to working with Moving APT.

Reviews highlight issues such as unexpected cost increases, delays, miscommunications leading to additional charges, and encounters with specific unprofessional crews — something worth keeping in mind when considering a broker for your move.

Moving APT received one of the lowest scores out of all of the competitors in this category with a 5.3, mainly due to a lack of GPS tracking, along with business hours and clearly listed pricing and additional fees being largely absent on a poorly designed website. As is common with brokers, this company can’t guarantee tracking services since it doesn’t conduct the physical move itself but contracts it to a third party. If you’re set on using Moving APT for your move but tracking is important to you, make sure you talk to your rep about the possibility of using a third-party tracking system. Moving APT’s status as a broker is clearly stated.

Most Customizable Moving Experience

JK Moving Services

4.2

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
No current offers available.

JK Moving Services has over 40 years of experience as both a nationwide broker and carrier. With stellar review ratings along with an A+ and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau, JK Moving stands out among Michigan movers for its fully customizable moving service packages and commitment to sustainability (more on that below). While it’s definitely a higher-end moving company, it offers 0% same as cash rates through a partnership with Enhancify, making it easier to manage the financial aspect of your move.

JK Moving is a dependable option if you’re someone who prioritizes sustainability, have a lot of specialty needs, and are hoping to design your own moving package from an a la carte menu of services. JK offers Michigan movers rates as low as 0% same as cash — a rare perk in the moving industry.

Because of the complexity of JK Moving’s fully customized packages, there’s no sample pricing online, and obtaining a quote requires speaking with a representative directly, which may be inconvenient for some. It’s important to note that JK uses third-party partners for long-distance moves, and while this allows for cross-country availability, it may result in varying levels of service quality and customer care, as experienced with other brokers in the industry. Unfortunately, JK doesn’t offer local moving services in Michigan or anywhere outside of the greater Washington, D.C. area.

JK Moving Services is an ideal choice for discerning customers who want to tailor their moving experience to their exact needs. With an a la carte menu of services, you can craft your move from the ground up. JK also offers convenient features like a mobile app for reviewing estimates and GPS tracking for shipment monitoring.

JK Moving specializes in corporate moves, so for example if you’re moving your law office from Ann Arbor to Grand Rapids and you’re looking for a minimally disruptive experience, JK might be your best match. Add a commitment to sustainability — including the use of reusable crates and recycled materials — and this mover aligns with the values of environmentally conscious customers in one of the leading states for climate action in the country. I also particularly recommend JK Moving Services to Michigan movers in general who are willing to pay a little more for a high-end, seamless moving experience.

JK Moving Services provides a comprehensive range of moving services, including packing, loading, unloading, and unpacking assistance. While this mover provides most common, basic services, its specialty lies in corporate and commercial moving. JK offers Michigan movers specialized services such as data archival, floor planning, and IT removal. This makes them an excellent choice for businesses moving to or from The Great Lakes State — particularly government offices or law firms.

In terms of protection plans, JK offers both standard liability and replacement value options. Standard liability covers goods at $0.60 per lb. or $50 per item — whichever is less. Replacement value provides minimum coverage of $6 per lb. or a $15,000 minimum. Additionally, JK partners with McCollister’s Auto Logistics for domestic vehicle shipping, further expanding their service capabilities.

My JK Moving representative let me know that they’re unable to show sample prices online due to the way they fully customize each move. I wasn’t able to get a detailed or binding estimate without providing much more in-depth detail, but below are the ballpark estimates for my two-bedroom, 760-mile  move. Both options include basic furniture disassembly and reassembly, wrapping and padding, loading and unloading, and full-value protection. Even though it’s a very rough estimate, it’s clear that it’s more expensive than most of the moving estimates in this review. In order to get a more accurate, binding quote, you’d need to schedule an on-site survey, which the coordinator said could be done within just a day or two of calling. JK Moving charges a $250 deposit, which is non-refundable but significantly lower than with other movers.

Transportation without packing: $6,500 to $7,500
Transportation with packing: $8,000 to $9,000

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this mover section is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario for a 760-mile move for a single-family home, with a move date set eight weeks away. Please be aware that these estimates may vary depending on factors such as additional services required and market fluctuations. The cost data presented was accurate at the time of writing.

Available Discounts

My JK Moving representative didn’t offer any discounts, and the focus of our conversation was primarily the importance of planning ahead and scheduling a weekday move for potential savings — as is common with moving companies.

As previously highlighted, JK Moving Services excels in tailoring each moving service package to suit the unique needs of the customer. This approach is particularly appealing if you’re seeking greater control over your moving process. With an extensive menu of customizable options, JK Moving offers standard services alongside a diverse array of specialty services, including government moves, employee relocations, and industry-specific commercial moves. Note that along with Moving APT, JK Moving is one of the only companies in Michigan to offer the rare perk of home staging.

For those in need of specialized services such as professional packing, custom crating, or junk removal, JK stands out as an excellent choice. Experienced crews are equipped to handle a wide range of items, including vehicles, pianos, and antiques, while also providing additional protection measures for added peace of mind.

Most Common Praise for JK Moving Services

The majority of positive reviews praise JK Moving Services for facilitating a smooth and stress-free moving experience, with emphasis on the friendliness and attentiveness of the moving crews. Customers frequently highlight clear and consistent communication from representatives throughout the moving process, as well as the accuracy of pricing estimates.

Most Common Criticism for JK Moving Services

The most common complaint among negative reviews of JK Moving Services deals with unreliable customer support, with some customers expressing dissatisfaction with the level of care received after a positive initial quote experience. While JK Moving operates as both a broker and a carrier, it’s notable that there are fewer negative reviews specifically related to outsourced moves compared to other brokers reviewed. Nonetheless, the inconsistency in customer support might be a point of concern.

Transparency is a critical factor when considering a moving company, as it fosters accountability among movers and their partners in everything from pricing to accessibility. JK Moving Services received a relatively low score in transparency. While the provider won points for openly acknowledging its status as a broker, offering online and phone booking, and providing a GPS tracking option, it fell short in several areas. Notably, JK Moving did not list additional fees, offer quick quotes or binding estimates, or make sample prices readily available online. However, it’s worth noting that JK’s lack of pricing transparency may be attributed, at least in part, to its unwavering dedication to tailor each move to the individual customer’s needs.

What To Look for in a Reputable Moving Company in Michigan

For a great moving experience, it’s crucial to take certain measures to ensure your chosen partner prioritizes the safety of your shipment while staying on time and on budget. To verify the legitimacy and reliability of your chosen carrier, inquire about the exact company name and their USDOT number. Ensure they are licensed by the Commissioner of Transportation in Michigan and certified by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

How To Avoid Moving Scams in Michigan

Unfortunately, moving scams are rampant, both in Michigan and the entire country, and they’re more common in spring and summer. To avoid common scams like overcharging, holding items hostage, or disappearing with your shipment, it’s important to take proactive measures. I recommend obtaining quotes from at least three providers and remaining vigilant for these common red flags:

  • Lowballing a quote without an on-site inspection
  • Requiring cash payments or suspiciously large deposits
  • Pressuring you into agreeing as quickly as possible
  • Asking for signatures on blank or incomplete documents
Not providing a clear local physical address
  • Not showing licensing information on their website
  • Failing to provide you with a copy of “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” (federally required to provide to all customers)

Michigan Moving Company News

Moving scams can strike in any season, but as mentioned in the previous section, they’re even more common during the spring and summer months — likely because that’s when most people move. With moving scams on the rise in general, the State of Michigan office created a free moving checklist to help you detect red flags, and the FMCSA created their own free resource to help you protect your move
