Workshops

Any home improvement enthusiast or DIY master knows their workshop is where the magic happens. Whether you need a space to store your extensive tool collection or somewhere to cut lumber to precise measurements, Today’s Homeowner knows that having a well-designed and outfitted shop is crucial to a successful project.

Build the Best Workshop on the Block

If you don’t yet have a workshop but want to add one to your home, you can take a few simple steps to design a more functional space.

Consider the workflow your projects might take. Then, lay out your work area to make this flow more intuitive and accessible. We also recommend grouping tools that perform similar functions. For example, you can keep measuring equipment in one section and cutting equipment in another.

If your workshop will have a dedicated bench or tabletop for projects, store tools under or near that surface for the easiest access. This step will help you avoid scattering tools all over the place. Next, ensure your shop has a source of ventilation for projects involving painting, finishing, or sealing. You can place a workbench near a window or exterior vent to create a less hazardous environment. Lastly, use tool cabinets and workbenches with wheels when possible. Movable workspaces will make your shop more customizable in the long run.

After designing your workshop, you must outfit it with all the necessary tools. Here are some basic items to include in your shop:

  • Step ladder
  • Measuring tape
  • Extension cords
  • Power tools
  • Screwdriver set
  • Ratchets
  • Hammer
  • Hand saw
  • Air compressor
  • Table saw
  • Sander
  • Shop vac
  • Broom
  • Dustpan
