As someone who’s moved a half dozen times, I know how hard it is to find a reliable and efficient mover, let alone one that will dispose of your junk, too. With so many options available, from full-service junk removal, junk removal add-ons, and various options for what can and can’t be removed, its easy to get overwhelmed while finding the right company for your needs. That’s why I personally researched and ranked the top moving companies for junk removal using Today’s Homeowner’s comprehensive review criteria.

Our review process involves looking at each moving company’s services, customization options, reputation, and transparency. We do extensive research, analyze customer reviews, engage in secret shopping, and even make direct calls to company representatives to gather the most accurate and up-to-date information. Top 5 Moving Companies for Junk Removal

International Van Lines: Best Full-Service Mover
Highlights
  • I recommend International Van Lines for junk removal, as its customizable services go above and beyond. IVL can handle nearly any item, from mattresses and appliances to construction debris, making it an excellent choice for those with diverse junk removal needs.
  • Interstate Moving & Relocation Group is another solid option for junk removal or waste removal, especially for those looking for a clear-cut cost estimation calculator to get an idea of sample pricing right off the bat.
  • Before you hire a moving company that removes junk, consider what you need to dispose of and check if the company can handle it. Many companies have restrictions on certain materials they can bring to a landfill, such as batteries, tires, old appliances, etc. So, ask about their policies or find out what they exclude online. Additionally, you can ask about their recycling and donation practices to local charities to make sure your items are disposed of responsibly.

My Expert Recommendation

My number one recommendation for junk removal is International Van Lines (IVL). It offers many services and can move and dispose of junk like mattresses, appliances, TVs, old furniture, and construction debris. In my opinion, it’s the most versatile and reliable choice, and it offers many customization add-ons, including junk removal. IVL’s exceptional customer service and comprehensive offerings set it apart from other moving companies. These reasons make it my preferred choice for those who want a seamless and stress-free move.

While Interstate Moving & Relocation Group (IMRG) is also a strong contender, particularly for its quick sample cost calculator that can help you get started on understanding pricing, it falls short in some areas compared to IVL’s overall package. I found IMRG’s formal quote process to be too complex. It uses confusing jargon and shows numerous discounts that may or may not apply to you. This makes the quote hard to understand in many cases. However, if you’re willing to go through the tedious quote process, IMRG is still ‌a strong, practical option for your junk removal needs.

Moving Companies I Didn’t Include for Junk Removal

American Van Lines

Don’t get me wrong,  I think American Van Lines is one of the best movers, and I recommend them to most people. That is unless you need junk removed.  Despite its excellent reputation, transparent pricing, and wide range of services, it lacks junk removal as part of its moving packages. If they start offering junk removal in the future, I would definitely add the company to my recommendations.

Moving APT

Moving APT didn’t make it onto my list of top five best moving companies for junk removal. Despite its wide range of services, including junk removal, I have concerns about its reputation. The company has received some poor ratings, which shows me that customers aren’t happy with this mover. Additionally, Moving APT’s transparency isn’t the best — it has hidden fees and tends not to disclose various factors up-front. Plus, it doesn’t have GPS tracking services, which makes it difficult for you keep tabs on your belongings during the move.

Our Reviews of the Best Moving Companies for Junk Removal

Best Full-Service Mover

International Van Lines

4.5

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
Get 10% Off Your Next Move

Besides offering junk pickup, one of the things I appreciate most about International Van Lines is its unparalleled range of services, making it a top choice for any type of move, whether it’s a local furniture relocation or a complex international household move. I am impressed by IVL’s vehicle shipping options — they can move motorcycles, RVs, and even yachts. No other company on this list can move these large vehicles. I also love the company’s detailed information and pricing on its website. The website explains IVL’s services well and gives you valuable insights into the moving and shipping process, making it a go-to resource for anyone planning a move.

One drawback I noticed with International Van Lines is that despite its comprehensive range of services, it doesn’t offer home staging, which could be a valuable option for seniors, individuals with disabilities, or those who are simply too busy to prepare their homes for a move. Additionally, while researching customer reviews, I found that IVL’s ratings can be somewhat polarized compared to other companies on the list, like Safeway Moving and American Van Lines, which maintain more consistently positive feedback. This disparity suggests that IVL may need to improve its communication with customers regarding expectations and potential cost fluctuations, as the variable nature of moving can sometimes lead to unexpected expenses that might leave customers feeling blindsided and dissatisfied.

International Van Lines is my top choice for anyone seeking a comprehensive moving experience with junk removal services, thanks to its extensive range of services and excellent customer service. With the ability to handle everything from local moves to complex international relocations, IVL has proven itself to be a reliable and versatile company. One of the most impressive aspects of IVL is its vehicle shipping options, which surpass those of its competitors. Whether you need to transport a car, motorcycle, RV, or even a large yacht, IVL has the expertise and resources to get the job done, offering a variety of shipping methods to suit your needs and budget.

While IVL excels in many areas, it does fall short in one aspect: the lack of a home staging service. This omission may be disappointing for some customers, particularly seniors or those with busy schedules who could benefit from assistance in preparing their homes for a move. However, this minor drawback doesn’t detract from IVL’s overall strength as a moving company or when it comes to junk removal. With its commitment to flexibility and understanding, as demonstrated by its willingness to accommodate changes or cancellations with sufficient notice, IVL continues to prioritize customer satisfaction. Ultimately, for anyone in need of a reliable, full-service moving company with junk removal company, especially those with unique vehicle shipping requirements, International Van Lines is a top contender.

International Van Lines earns a well-deserved perfect score of 10/10 in the services and cost category thanks to its comprehensive range of moving services, including junk removal. What sets IVL apart is its exceptional international moving capabilities, drawing from years of experience in navigating the complexities of customs, drayage, and container sizing. Whether you’re planning a local move, a long-distance relocation, or even a corporate move, IVL has you covered, making it my top recommendation for those seeking a one-stop solution for their moving needs, especially when it comes to international moves and junk removal.

Cost

My secret shopping experience with International Van Lines was extremely positive, with the sales representative going above and beyond to provide me with three different quotes for a two-bedroom move from Denver to Chicago. This meant I could compare costs and customize my options. The representative was accommodating and professional, offering to conduct the process over the phone, online, or a combination of both. The total estimate for my move, including basic services, origin and destination fees, and a discount, came to $5,744.51, with an additional $190 for full packing services, bringing the grand total to $5,934.51. This quote was competitive with other providers and included junk removal services, making International Van Lines a strong contender for my moving needs.

Here’s how that price broke down on the estimate:

  • Basic Estimate Price: $5,494.50
  • Origin & Destination Fee: $450.00
  • Full Packing Service: $0.01
  • Discount: -$200.00
  • Total Estimate: $5,744.51
  • Total Estimate Including Packing Service: $5,934.51

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this article is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario from Denver to Chicago for a single-family home and a move date eight weeks away. Be aware that these estimates may vary depending on factors such as additional services required and market fluctuations. The cost data presented was accurate at the time of writing.

Available Discounts

One of the best ways to get a discount with IVL is to book your move at least two months in advance. In most cases, this gets you a significantly lower price. Additionally, IVL gives senior citizens a 15% discount, making it a top choice for older adults. IVL also sometimes runs promotions, which will pop up online. However, some are only available from sales reps over the phone. So, it’s best to ask for discounts/promotions while you’re booking/getting an estimate. You can also consider providing a flexible moving date, as you can often get lower pricing if IVL can move you during a “non-peak” date.

International Van Lines offers an impressive array of customization options, earning a strong 9/10 score in this category. While it doesn’t provide home staging services like some of its competitors, such as Moving APT, IVL more than makes up for it with its exceptional vehicle shipping options and unique online packing material store. Whether you’re in need of boxes, tape, padding, or complete packing kits, IVL has it all, setting it apart from other companies that typically only offer materials through their movers. The wide range of customization options extends across all of IVL’s services, including junk removal, ensuring that you can tailor your moving experience to your specific needs.

International Van Lines boasts an impressive reputation, earning a well-deserved 10/10 rating. With an A rating from the Better Business Bureau and a 4.4 on Trustpilot, IVL stands out among its competitors as a company that consistently delivers high-quality service and customer satisfaction. While some reviews may be polarized (likely due to miscommunication regarding the variability of moving costs), my personal experience with IVL’s quote process and customer service has been nothing short of excellent. The company’s numerous awards, including recognition from Forbes, Newsweek, and Inc. 500, further solidify its position as a top choice for those seeking reliable moving and junk removal services.

Most Common Praise for International Van Lines

Based on my analysis of customer reviews, the most frequently praised aspect of International Van Lines is the professionalism and courtesy of their moving crews. Customers consistently highlight how the workers who handle the loading, unloading, and junk removal are prompt, friendly, and complete the process efficiently within the estimated timeframe. I noticed many reviewers specifically mentioning that the hardworking IVL staff carefully packed their belongings. While pricing and communication also receive positive remarks, the standout praise from customers is undoubtedly directed at the professionalism exhibited by International Van Lines’ moving teams.

Most Common Criticism for International Van Lines

After diving deep into customer reviews, I found that the most common criticism of International Van Lines relates to communication issues. In the worst cases, customers report being unable to get in touch with anyone at the company at all. Some mention their initial sales representatives becoming unresponsive, forcing them to deal with a new rep unfamiliar with their move’s details. Other reviewers cited sporadic, infrequent communication as a problem. While many customers have positive experiences with IVL’s moving and junk removal services when things go smoothly, reviews suggest that the company sometimes drops the ball on communication and resolution if unexpected issues arise during the move, leading to frustrations like late deliveries.

When finding a moving company, transparency should be an important factor for you. You want to be sure the company is up-front about all aspects of your move and keeps you well-informed about your belongings throughout the process. International Van Lines does well in this regard, which is why I give them a strong 8.7/10 for transparency. IVL clearly discloses whether they are acting as a broker or carrier for your move, so you know if they are handling it directly or contracting it out. They also provide helpful pricing tools on their website, including a unique cost calculator that gives a fairly accurate estimate without requiring you to commit to anything. However, as with many moving companies, some IVL reviews do mention frustration with the final price differing from the initial quote due to the variable nature of moving, so it’s important to thoroughly understand all potential fees before booking.

Best Cost Estimation Tools

Interstate Moving & Relocation Group

4.2

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
No current offers available.

One thing I appreciate about Interstate Moving & Relocation Group (IMRG) is its 25 years of experience in the industry, which is a strong indicator of a reputable company. I also like that the brand offers a furniture moving service, giving them the flexibility to find carriers specializing in both local moves and long-distance relocations — a great option if you need junk removal alongside moving just a few pieces.

While navigating their website can be a bit tricky, I found it to be a valuable resource packed with informative articles and tips for those new to hiring professional movers, along with an easy estimate cost-calculator tool. Additionally, IMRG’s third-party arbitration process for dispute resolution is a unique feature that provides customers with an alternative to potentially lengthy litigation should any issues arise during the move or junk removal process.

As a moving broker, Interstate Moving & Relocation Group (IMRG) doesn’t have full control over the entire moving and junk removal process, which can lead to issues like poor customer service, damaged belongings, and higher-than-expected costs. When IMRG contracts out the move to a third-party carrier, you end up signing a contract with a company you didn’t personally vet, which can be unsettling when entrusting them with your possessions.

Furthermore, if any disputes arise during the move, IMRG has limited ability to directly intervene or enforce a resolution since the legal agreement is between you and the carrier. While brokers like IMRG offer flexibility in finding specialized moving services, I prefer the simplicity and accountability of working directly with a full-service moving company.

Interstate Moving and Relocation Group (IMRG) earns a solid 8.4 out of 10 rating thanks to its wide array of services, informative website, and positive experience during my secret shopping process. As a broker, IMRG has the flexibility to find carriers that specialize in specific services like furniture moving or junk removal, which can be a significant advantage for customers with unique needs. However, the fact that IMRG doesn’t have direct control over the entire moving process is a notable drawback, as it can lead to complications and communication issues if problems arise during the move.

While I tend to prefer working directly with carriers to streamline the process and have a single point of contact, I wouldn’t completely rule out using a broker like IMRG. Their positive reviews, third-party arbitration options for dispute resolution, and helpful estimation tools are all points in their favor. That said, it’s crucial for potential customers to be aware that some negative reviews mention issues with inaccurate estimates, damaged items, and subpar customer service, problems that may stem from the inherent challenges of the broker model. Ultimately, whether to choose IMRG or another company comes down to weighing the pros and cons based on your specific moving and junk removal needs.

Interstate Moving and Relocation Group (IMRG) earns an impressive 9/10 rating from me for their comprehensive range of services, which includes all the standard local and domestic moving options you’d expect from a top-tier company. While they don’t offer international moving services, which can be quite complex due to customs and port of entry regulations, IMRG stands out with their furniture moving service for both local and long-distance relocations. This unique offering makes them my go-to choice if I need to move just a few large items like couches or appliances, whether it’s across town or the country. With such a wide array of services and add-ons, IMRG can easily meet any customer’s moving needs, including junk removal.

Cost

It’s true that Interstate Moving and Relocation Group has a handy website cost calculator that can give you a quick idea of pricing, which is really helpful when comparison shopping. But, during my secret shopping, I was disappointed to see that my official estimate from IMRG was higher compared to the other moving companies on this list. The quote included some technical jargon like “tariff” and “binding estimate fee.” Most people don’t know what these terms really mean, so it could lead to some confusion. I would have appreciated it if the sales representative provided clear explanations for these terms, as the other companies’ quotes were more straightforward and easy to understand. Since IMRG is a moving broker (rather than a full provider), its binding estimate fee doesn’t guarantee the final price you pay. In many cases, your actual cost could exceed the initial quote.

Here’s a breakdown of the quote I received for a two-bedroom move from Denver to Chicago:

  • Total Tariff: $4,531.00
  • Total Tariff Discount: -$2,502.40 (55.23%)
  • Basic Estimate Price: $2,028.60
  • Fuel Surcharge: $304.29
  • Full Packing Service: $724.50
  • Full Unpacking Service: $362.25
  • Binding Estimate Fee: $2,655.28
  • Online Discount: -$1,500.00
  • Basic Valuation Protection: $0.00
  • Total Move Estimate: $4,574.92

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this article is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario from Denver to Chicago for a single-family home and a move date eight weeks away. Be aware that these estimates may vary depending on factors such as additional services required and market fluctuations. The cost data presented was accurate at the time of writing.

Available Discounts

Interstate Moving and Relocation Group (IMRG) usually has a $500 discount on their website if you book your move through their toll-free number. I agree, this “discount” looks great at first glance. But don’t be fooled, it’s just a standard marketing tactic used by many moving companies (in reality they are just inflating their costs to give you a “discount”). I’ve gotten lots of quotes from various providers during my research every time I’ve moved. Almost every quote included several discounts that aren’t even mentioned on the companies’ websites. This leads me to further believe that IMRG’s $500 discount is more of a marketing ploy designed to make customers feel like they’re getting a special deal rather than an actual cost-saving opportunity.

Interstate Moving and Relocation Group (IMRG) offers a wide range of customization options, earning them a strong 9/10 rating in this category. It has all the standard services like furniture assembly and disassembly and less common services like junk removal and custom crating. With this customization, IMRG can cater to most customers’ needs. However, like many other companies on this list, IMRG falls short by not offering home staging services, which can be incredibly valuable for busy professionals, parents, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. While it’s not surprising given the rarity of this service among moving companies, it’s still disappointing and costs IMRG a point in my assessment.

Interstate Moving and Relocation Group (IMRG) has mediocre feedback from its customers on trusted review sites, earning a 7.8/10 rating from me for its reputation. While the company doesn’t stand out as an exceptional performer in terms of customer reviews, it also hasn’t been inundated with an overwhelming number of complaints. Most of the negative feedback focuses on a handful of recurring issues, which IMRG appears to be actively addressing based on their responses to Better Business Bureau complaints. On the flip side, there are also numerous glowing reviews praising the company’s services, including their junk removal offerings. Considering both the positive and negative aspects of their reputation, I believe IMRG strikes a reasonable balance compared to other companies on this list.

Most Common Praise for Interstate Moving and Relocation Group

Based on my look-over of many customer reviews, the two most frequently praised aspects of IMRG are the professionalism of the moving teams and the competitive pricing. Many customers highlight the friendly, prompt, and efficient service provided by the movers, which is a testament to IMRG’s ability to partner with reliable carriers. As a broker, IMRG can shop around for the best deals, resulting in the second most common praise: affordability. However, it’s important to note that since IMRG doesn’t directly handle the physical move, the positive feedback about the moving crews is more a reflection of the carriers’ performance than IMRG’s own services, which primarily focus on customer support and coordination.

Most Common Criticism for Interstate Moving and Relocation Group

The most common criticisms of IMRG among customers on review sites are inflated costs, poor customer service, inaccurate estimates, and lost or damaged items. While these complaints aren’t widespread, I do see them consistently in most reviews from unhappy customers. In some cases, the issue of increased costs may stem from customers incorrectly declaring their inventory during the initial quote process, leading to a significant price hike when movers arrive and reassess the job. However, this doesn’t fully account for the other mentioned problems, which suggest areas where IMRG could improve their services, including junk removal, to better meet customer expectations.

IMRG scores a fair 7.7 out of 10 for transparency, which is slightly lower than some of its competitors. As a broker, IMRG doesn’t have an in-house tracking system, which can be a drawback for customers who want real-time updates on their belongings during the move. While the third-party carrier hired by IMRG might offer GPS tracking, it’s not guaranteed, and customers will only find out on moving day. Despite some complaints about hidden fees or higher-than-expected final costs, many customer reviews praise IMRG for their competitive pricing and accurate estimates. However, the lack of a definitive tracking option keeps IMRG behind some of the other carriers on this list in terms of transparency.

Best Flat-rate Pricing

Safeway Moving

4.1

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
No current offers available.

Despite being one of the smaller companies on this list, Safeway Moving stands out for its exceptional customer service and impressive online reviews. While secret shopping, the Safeway representative went above and beyond, taking the time to thoroughly explain their process and even sharing helpful resources like the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s SAFER system. I appreciate their customer-first philosophy and the personable, informative approach of their sales team. Additionally, Safeway Moving offers a unique benefit for those needing to move pianos — they use climate-controlled trucks to protect these delicate instruments from humidity and temperature fluctuations, a service not provided by most competitors.

The main thing I don’t like about Safeway Moving is their lack of online tracking for your move. For me, I expect real-time updates on the location of my belongings. While some of Safeway’s trucks are GPS-enabled, not all of them have this capability. And you won’t know if you can track it until the truck shows up the day of your move. Additionally, Safeway’s website doesn’t provide as much detailed information about its services compared to competitors like International Van Lines. This makes it hard to compare to other providers’ quotes and services. I would like to see Safeway get fleet-wide GPS tracking and improve its website, but these are not deal breakers for most people.

Safeway Moving may be a smaller company compared to some of the industry giants on this list. However, they offer a quality moving service with junk removal and strong reviews. I was impressed by the level of professionalism, knowledge, and helpfulness of the sales reps I spoke to. As a veteran-owned company, Safeway offers affordable junk removal services and excellent discounts for military members. I think it’s commendable that they give back to those who serve. Additionally, they are my top recommendation for piano moving, alongside JK Moving Services.  Both Safeway and JK use climate-controlled trucks that protect delicate instruments from humidity and temperature fluctuations.

One area where Safeway Moving could improve is in its technology. Their website simply lacks ‌the details their competitors’ sites show. This is a drawback for me‌ — I like to read and understand the mover’s services as I compare quotes and companies. Moreover, I find it frustrating that you won’t know whether your moving truck has GPS tracking or not until it pulls up to your front door. While manual tracking is available by contacting the company, which then reaches out to the driver for a status report, it’s not as convenient as the app or website-based GPS tracking offered by some other movers.

Despite these issues, I believe Safeway Moving is a solid choice for anyone in need of reliable moving and junk removal services. Their consistently high customer reviews show they do quality work, and their range of offerings is on par with industry standards. While I hope to see Safeway add more information to its website and fleet-wide GPS tracking in the future, its exceptional customer service and specialized solutions like climate-controlled piano moving make it a top moving company.

Safeway Moving offers a range of services that align with industry standards, including junk removal. This means customers won’t have to compromise on their moving needs. However, they do lose some points for not providing local moving services, making them the only company on this list with this notable absence, hence the 8.0/10 rating. While this shouldn’t be an issue for all readers of this article, it’s worth keeping in mind if you’re considering Safeway for future local moves or recommending them to others. Despite this shortcoming, Safeway’s other offerings are comprehensive and competitive within the market.

Cost

When I got quotes, I found Safeway Moving’s prices to be on the lower end of the spectrum compared to their competitors, which the sales representative confirmed was their target range. This competitive pricing, combined with the exceptional customer service I received throughout the quote process, positions Safeway as a strong contender in the market. For a two-bedroom move from Denver to Chicago, including basic assembly, disassembly, and limited standard packing, I was quoted a total of $3,775.00. It’s important to note that booking further in advance and allowing for a flexible delivery window can help keep costs down, as prices may increase for last-minute moves or specific delivery dates.

Here’s a breakdown of the charges from my Safeway Moving estimate:

  • Basic Estimate Price: $3,500.00
  • Fuel Surcharge: $175.00
  • Packing Materials: $100.00
  • Total Moving Estimate: $3,775.00
  • Total Moving Estimate w/ Full Packing Service: $4,275.00

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this article is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario from Denver to Chicago for a single-family home and a move date eight weeks away. Be aware that these estimates may vary depending on factors such as additional services required and market fluctuations. The cost data presented was accurate at the time of writing.

Available Discounts

Safeway Moving offers a range of discounts to various groups, including a 5% discount for seniors who book through their website’s phone number and up to 20% off for veterans, as the company is veteran-owned. Students, teachers, and first responders can also take advantage of special discounts. Additionally, anyone who books their move at least 30 days in advance can get a discount on their total cost. To get the best possible price, I recommend booking your move a minimum of two months ahead of time and providing a flexible delivery window rather than insisting on a specific date. It’s also worth noting that while not a discount, Safeway Moving donates a piece of the proceeds from each move to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, supporting a worthy cause.

Scoring a solid 9 out of 10 rating, Safeway Moving offers a wide range of customization options that cater to most customers’ needs, putting them on par with their competitors. However, like all but one company on this list, they don’t provide home staging services, which slightly impacts their overall score. One standout feature is Safeway’s piano moving service, which utilizes climate-controlled trucks to protect these delicate instruments from temperature and humidity fluctuations during transport, a valuable option for customers with pianos. While Safeway’s customization options may not be as extensive as some others on the list, such as JK Moving’s multiple packing choices, they still provide a comprehensive selection that should satisfy the majority of customers’ requirements — including junk removal and hauling services.

Safeway Moving stands out from its competitors with consistently positive reviews across various platforms, which is a significant selling point, in my opinion. While their Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating of B- is respectable, it did cost them a few points, resulting in a still-strong 9/10 rating from me. It’s worth noting that as a smaller company, Safeway may not have the same volume of reviews as larger competitors, but the quality of their feedback remains impressive. Trustpilot and Google show particularly strong results for Safeway. Although their Yelp score of 1.4 seems low, it’s comparable to other companies on this list. Yelp is primarily used to review restaurants, so I trust the scores on BBB, Google, and Trustpilot more.

Most Common Praise for Safeway Moving

After sifting through hundreds of customer reviews, two aspects of Safeway Moving consistently stand out as the most commonly praised: their speediness and the seamless nature of their moving process from start to finish. Many customers report that Safeway’s crews arrive promptly and work efficiently, completing the job quickly without compromising on quality. Additionally, reviewers often mention how stress-free and easy the entire experience is, thanks to smooth communication with knowledgeable and professional sales representatives and moving coordinators. Having personally interacted with several of Safeway’s sales reps during the quote process, I can attest to their expertise and the ease of working with this company.

Most Common Criticism for Safeway Moving

Among the relatively few complaints lodged against Safeway Moving, damaged items emerge as the most common issue. However, it’s important to note that this problem is not unique to Safeway; in fact, it’s a frequent complaint across all the companies on this list. While it’s understandable that some bumps and scrapes may occur during the moving process, even with careful packing by the crew, customers should discuss valuation coverage options with their sales representative to ensure they have adequate protection in case of lost or damaged belongings. Depending on the circumstances and the agreement reached between the customer and the company, remedies for damaged items can range from full replacement to repair.

Safeway Moving’s lack of guaranteed GPS tracking for their entire fleet is the main factor that hurts their transparency score, resulting in my lower 7/10 rating. While they do have some GPS-enabled trucks, not all of their vehicles are equipped with this technology, which can be concerning for customers who want to keep tabs on their belongings during the move. The sales representative mentioned that Safeway is working on upgrading their fleet to be fully GPS-enabled, but until that happens, they fall behind their competitors in this aspect. Despite this shortcoming, Safeway does meet other important transparency criteria, such as disclosing their broker/carrier status and providing binding estimates.

4.2

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
No current offers available.

Along with offering junk removal, JK Moving Services stands out from its competitors by offering unique features like in-house financing options, which allow customers to pay for their move over time rather than in one lump sum. I’m also impressed by their commitment to sustainability, which is evident in their zero-waste efforts and use of reusable crates instead of traditional cardboard boxes. Additionally, JK Moving’s fully customizable service packages, advanced GPS tracking technology, and an extensive network covering 170+ countries make them a top choice for those with diverse moving needs. The fact that they prioritize ongoing training and background checks for their movers gives me added peace of mind when entrusting them with my belongings.

The main drawback of JK Moving Services is that they don’t provide online quotes, which means you’ll need to contact a representative directly to get an estimate for your move. While this extra step can be inconvenient, it may be worth the effort if you require a highly customized moving plan and have the budget to accommodate their services. Another potential issue is that JK partners with third-party providers to facilitate long-distance moves, which can sometimes lead to inconsistencies in service quality and customer care, a common challenge faced by brokers in the moving industry.

JK Moving Services stands out to me as a highly professional and community-oriented company that goes above and beyond in its commitment to excellence. With its well-trained staff, numerous industry awards, and specialized services like climate-controlled storage for sensitive items, JK Moving Services demonstrates a dedication to providing top-notch moving experiences for its customers. The company’s charitable initiatives, such as the JK Community Farm and JK Black Oak Wildlife Sanctuary, showcase its commitment to giving back to the community and making a positive impact beyond its immediate business operations.

One of JK Moving Services’ most unique and valuable offerings is its financing option, which sets it apart from many competitors in the industry. Recognizing the high costs associated with interstate moves, JK Moving Services has taken steps to address this need and provide customers with a more accessible and affordable way to relocate. Additionally, the company’s customizable service packages allow customers to tailor their moving experience to their specific needs and preferences, ensuring a more personalized and satisfactory outcome. While JK Moving Services may not offer the same breadth of services as some of its competitors, its commitment to quality, sustainability, and customer satisfaction makes it a strong contender in the moving industry, earning it a respectable overall 8.4/10 rating.

JK Moving Services earns a perfect 10/10 score for its comprehensive range of offerings, including the essential services I look for at Today’s Homeowner, such as packing, loading, unloading, and unpacking assistance. What sets JK apart is its focus on customization and eco-friendly practices, as well as its expertise in corporate and commercial moving, making it an ideal choice for those relocating homes or offices. Additionally, JK’s unique financing option, which connects customers with lenders and facilitates pre-approval, is a standout feature that can significantly help those facing the high costs of a long-distance move.

Cost

While secret shopping with JK Moving Services, I was unable to obtain an online quote as the company requires an on-site visual inspection to provide an accurate estimate. However, I appreciate this approach, as it ensures that all inventory is properly accounted for, minimizing the risk of unexpected price increases on moving day. When I called JK Moving Services, the representative provided me with the following ballpark ranges for a 2-bedroom move from Indianapolis, IN, to Augusta, GA (630 miles) in two months:

  • Transportation without packing: $6,500 to $7,500
  • Transportation with packing: $8,000 to $9,000

Both options include basic furniture disassembly and reassembly, wrapping and padding, loading and unloading, and full-value protection. It’s worth noting that these estimates are higher than most other companies in this review, and a non-refundable $250 deposit is required to schedule an on-site survey for a more accurate, binding quote.

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this scenario was accurate at the time of writing.

Available Discounts

While JK Moving Services doesn’t advertise any standard discounts on their website, there are still ways to save money when booking their services. According to the representative I spoke with, planning ahead is key — booking your move at least two months in advance and scheduling it for a weekday can get you lower rates. Additionally, being flexible with your delivery window, rather than insisting on a specific date, can also lead to cost savings, as moving companies appreciate customers who are accommodating with scheduling. Although JK Moving may not offer the same discounts as some of its competitors, following these tips can help you secure the best possible price for your move.

JK Moving Services stands out from its competitors by offering an extensive range of customization options, allowing customers to tailor their moving experience to their specific needs. In addition to standard services like packing, custom crating, and junk removal, JK Moving provides specialized assistance for items such as vehicles, pianos, and antiques, as well as industry-specific commercial moves, government relocations, and employee transfers. While the company offers an impressive array of customization options, it does lose a point for not providing home staging services, which can be particularly valuable for those with mobility issues. Despite this minor drawback, JK Moving Services remains an excellent choice for customers seeking a highly personalized moving experience, earning a stellar 9/10 rating for customization.

JK Moving Services has earned an impressive 9/10 rating for its reputation, setting itself apart from many of its competitors. This BBB-accredited company has garnered praise from customers for its professionalism, punctuality, and commitment to quality service, which can be attributed to its rigorous hiring practices and ongoing training for moving crews. While some negative reviews mention issues related to pricing, damage, and claims, JK Moving’s overall rating of an A+ and a 4.45 on the Better Business Bureau website is a testament to its strong standing in the industry, particularly when compared to other providers who often receive lower scores on review platforms.

Most Common Praise for JK Moving Services

I was pleased to see that JK Moving Services gets many mentions about their professionalism, expert movers, and great phone support in its reviews. Many positive reviews also mention smooth and efficient moves, with expert care and thorough communication from JK throughout the process. I also see that JK provided very accurate pricing to most customers. This is a difficult feat, and it’s good to know that JK Moving has refined their estimating process to be more accurate than some other moving companies.

Most Common Criticism for JK Moving Services

One of the most common criticisms of JK Moving Services I see in reviews is inconsistent customer support, with some reviewers mentioning a lack of care and attention after an initially positive quote experience. While this issue is not uncommon among moving companies that also act as brokers, it’s important to note that JK Moving Services has significantly fewer negative reviews related to outsourced moves compared to other brokers in this review. Another frequently cited complaint is damage to belongings during the move, although this is a common concern across all moving companies due to the inherent risks involved in transporting items by truck, even when companies employ proper packing and stowing techniques.

I’m giving JK Moving Services a lower score of 6.3/10 for its transparency. While its pricing estimates are accurate, it doesn’t fully disclose that it is a broker before you agree to use them for your move. That said, many people won’t care if JK contracts the move to a third party. However, with carriers, it’s more difficult to make sure you’re getting the best movers. Sure, JK Moving Services has many positives — online and phone booking and GPS tracking, but it lacks details about additional fees, quick quotes, binding estimates, and sample prices on its website. That said, they likely keep their online pricing information broad so they can provide customized quotes to customers.

Mayflower Moving

4.1

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
No current offers

What I appreciate most about Mayflower is its lengthy experience in the moving industry, providing moving services since the late 1920s. Another aspect of Mayflower that I love is its Snapmoves service. Snapmoves is only for small moves, like apartment moves, and is perfect for those who need to move on short notice. I also like that Mayflower offers a variety of services to make your move easier, such as car shipping, valuation coverage, full-service packing and unpacking, junk removal, and antique moving.

My main concern with Mayflower is the lack of transparency when it comes to pricing. The company doesn’t have a readily available breakdown of its fees for things like flights of stairs, shuttles, or elevators. Customers have to complete a virtual assessment to get a binding estimate, which can be inconvenient. I also found it difficult to find reviews from past Mayflower customers. The company doesn’t have Google Business or Yelp profiles, and its reviews on the BBB are for both Mayflower and its parent company, UniGroup. While Mayflower has a solid reputation, I would prefer to see more readily available information about its pricing and customer experiences.

Mayflower has been in the moving business for nearly a century, which says a lot about the quality of service it provides. It offers the services and customizations customers expect in a moving company and even provides niche services such as Snapmoves. Mayflower is a carrier, meaning it uses its own equipment and employees to move your items, as opposed to a broker that hires third-party movers. While there are certainly reputable moving brokers, I prefer carriers because they tend to have better quality control and more accountability.

Compared to other companies on this list, Mayflower is highly competitive. Its extensive history and experience in the moving business have helped the company cultivate a high level of professionalism and know-how. While some other companies on this list, such as International Van Lines, offer a higher level of customization, I don’t think they can compete with Mayflower’s staff and processes. Customer reviews consistently praise the professionalism of Mayflower’s staff, drivers, and crews, which is something discerning customers should consider. Quality service is key to a stress-free moving experience and worth a lot when it comes to complex undertakings like moving, which is why I gave Mayflower an overall score of 8.1/10.

Mayflower gets a perfect score of 10/10 for its services and cost. It has the experience and resources to handle any move, big or small. Mayflower’s Snapmoves service streamlines the process for people with apartments or small houses, including out-of-state moves. It also offers junk removal services for an additional fee, which is helpful when downsizing or getting rid of unwanted items before you move. Its other services include packing and unpacking, loading and unloading, furniture disassembly and reassembly, and auto transport. If you need a full-service moving company that can handle everything from start to finish, Mayflower is a solid option.

Cost

Mayflower’s quote process was different from that of the other companies I researched because it requires a virtual survey to get a binding estimate. While this may seem inconvenient, I actually think it is a positive indicator of a quality moving company. A visual survey, whether virtual or in-person, helps to ensure that all of your belongings are accounted for upfront, leading to a more accurate estimate and preventing surprise costs on moving day. The representative I spoke with was only able to provide a ballpark estimate for my move from a two-bedroom home between Indianapolis, IN, and Augusta, GA:

  • Transportation without packing: $2,000 – $2,900 +

Note: Mayflower does offer packing services for an additional cost, which can be discussed during the virtual survey.

Editor’s Note: The cost data presented in this scenario was accurate at the time of writing.

Available Discounts

Mayflower doesn’t often have discounts or coupons available on its website, but it occasionally runs promotions through organizations for veterans and seniors. I recommend checking with any organizations you’re affiliated with to see if they offer any discounts with Mayflower. Mayflower doesn’t require a deposit, and you won’t be charged until your move begins, which is a huge plus.

Here are a few other ways to save money on your move with Mayflower:

  • Book early: I recommend booking at least two months in advance to get the best pricing. It’s more difficult for moving companies to plan truck and mover availability when you book too close to your move date, so they tend to charge a higher rate.
  • Be flexible: If you’re able to give a date range, like a whole week or multiple weekend options, you could find a lower price for a certain date. Mayflower may be able to offer you a discount if they can fit your move into their schedule more easily.

I gave Mayflower 7.7/10 for customization because of the variety of services it offers. Although the company’s junk removal and packing materials aren’t available through all of its moving agents, Mayflower customers can customize their moves in several other ways, such as opting for full-service packing, partial packing, or electronics packing. Mayflower also offers car shipping, piano moving, and antique moving, but these services aren’t available through the Snapmoves program.

Mayflower’s reputation loses a couple of points because customer reviews, particularly on Yelp, aren’t in the company’s favor. While a 2.1-star rating on Yelp might not seem impressive, it’s actually better than most moving companies. Mayflower also has a decent standing with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and positive reviews on Google. The company’s BBB profile is actually for its parent company, UniGroup, and reviews on the profile reference Mayflower, UniGroup, and its subsidiaries. Positive reviews highlight the helpfulness, responsiveness, and professionalism of Mayflower crews and representatives. Negative reviews typically mention issues with the claims department, frustrating moving day experiences, and items broken during delivery. All in all, Mayflower earned an 8/10 in reputation  due to its varied reviews.

Most Common Praise for Mayflower

While positive reviews are sparse, Mayflower’s website and BBB page do contain a few shining testimonials from customers. These happy clients consistently mention professionalism as a top benefit of hiring Mayflower. From the initial contact with representatives to the final interactions with movers, customers report efficient, courteous, and responsive service. The company clearly prioritizes communication, as several reviewers noted how impressed they were with the clear and consistent updates throughout the moving process. This likely helps customers feel confident that their belongings — and the junk they need hauled away — are in good hands.

Most Common Criticism for Mayflower

While Mayflower isn’t criticized online for its junk removal, its moving services tend to receive negative reviews, primarily around customer service and damaged items. A vast majority of reviews on the BBB and Trustpilot are negative, with 1-star reviews claiming damaged or broken items upon delivery. Customers cited issues like smashed fragile items, broken furniture, and delivery delays with little to no help from the claims department. Granted, I don’t believe damaged items are a huge issues, but accidents do happen, no matter which company you choose. Moving is a rough process, so it’s common for some items to get scuffs and minor cosmetic damage.

I give Mayflower a 7.3/10 rating for its transparency, as the brand fully discloses its broker/carrier status upfront. This lets you know right away that either Mayflower will handle your move themselves or subcontract it out to another moving company. Mayflower also offers shipment tracking and provides extensive cost information on its website, which helps customers estimate moving expenses. The only thing missing, in my opinion, was sample pricing to give customers a better idea of potential costs.

What to Look for in a Reputable Company for Junk Removal

It may be obvious, but the first thing you should check for if you need junk removal is if the moving company offers this service.  Once you confirm that, read reviews about the movers and get a quote. I recommend getting a quote online and over the phone. When you speak to a representative, I find it easier to get a feel for what the company is like. Legitimate moving companies are licensed with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and have a valid U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) number. You should be able to find these licenses easily on the company’s website, quotes/estimates, and other documents. Additionally, they should have a professional online presence with a company website, customer reviews on trusted sites, and active social media profiles.

Here are some other things you should look for to make sure a moving company is legitimate and reputable:

  • The company is registered with the FMCSA and has a USDOT number on its website, estimates, and bill of lading.
  • Sales representatives are professional, introducing themselves by name and company.
  • Estimates include a detailed inventory of items to be moved and the junk you need disposed of, with clear total costs.
  • They mention the “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet and/or encourage you to read it.
  • They give an in-person or virtual inspection to provide a more accurate quote.
  • They have insurance coverage to protect your possessions during the move and junk removal process.

How To Avoid Scams for Junk Removal

Unfortunately, there are some shady moving companies that may try to scam you, even when it comes to junk removal. The most common moving scam is “hostage-taking.” In this type of scam, a company will take a truckload of belongings “hostage” until you pay them more money. For example, they may say, “you need to pay us $500 more before we deliver your items to your new home.” That said, movers can legally withhold items until the bill of lading is paid. But they can’t demand more money until after delivery. If this happens to you, I suggest calling law enforcement. While you’re looking at moving companies, trust your instincts if something seems “off” about one. A large, national provider, like the five I recommend in this guide, is unlikely to be involved in any scams.

Here are some red flags I watch out for to avoid falling victim to a moving or junk removal scam:

  • Lacks proper licensing and registration info, such as a valid USDOT number, on their website and documents
  • Doesn’t provide the federally-mandated “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet
  • Refuses to conduct an in-person inspection of your belongings before providing an estimate
  • Requires a sizable upfront deposit, especially if they demand hard-to-trace payment methods like wire transfers or cash
  • Gives estimates without a detailed inventory or total cost or pressures you to accept a quote on the spot
  • Has a generic company email address or phone greeting that doesn’t include the business name
  • Claims years in business but lacks an established online presence and customer reviews to support it
  • Websites and facilities appear unprofessional or in poor condition
