To remove hot air from the upper story of the garage on the Kuppersmith Project house, we installed a Broan solar powered exhaust fan. Since the fan runs on the power of the sun, no wiring was needed.
Another great feature on the home is the central vacuum system from NuTone. The motor unit for the vacuum is mounted in the garage, with outlets scattered throughout the house. Because a central vacuum system removes the air from your home as it cleans, it can improve the indoor air quality when compared to a traditional vacuum cleaner.

Danny Lipford: The Kuppersmith Project is the renovation of an 85-year-old, classic American Tudor home. It may have been a grand ole home back in the day, but time has taken its toll, and it’s in need of some major TLC. Besides restoring the original structure, I’m also adding another 1,500 square feet of living space. And, while I want to keep its unique character, I also want to create a home with the kind of energy efficiency and functionality everyone has come to expect in the 21st century. That means taking my 30-plus years experience as a remodeler, and combining it with some innovative products.
Here’s a great example from Broan-NuTone. You can see a solar powered exhaust fan from Broan, right on top of the garage. Think about it, you don’t have any power going to it at all, so it uses the energy of the sun to power the exhaust fan. What a great idea, using the sun to cool your attic.
You know the old saying, two steps forward and one step back, that’s exactly where we are here in the garage. One step forward is that we’ve almost completed all of the installation of our Gladiator GarageWorks system, and it will make this garage so efficient once everything is complete.
Another step forward is that we now have a central vac system from NuTone. You know, one of the advantages of having a central vac system in your home is that the vacuum motor is outside, not inside, constantly recirculating the same air that you have. So something like this that completely exhausts the air to the outside will certainly help improve your indoor air quality.
