Homeowners Brent Becker and Shelby Mitchell lead busy lives, so cleaning and organizing their overcrowded garage wasn’t at the top of their to-do list. To remedy the situation, we helped them out with a top-to-bottom garage makeover.
To organize a garage, take everything out of the garage and separate items into piles to keep, piles to donate, and piles to throw away. This culling process gives you a clean slate and a smaller list of things to return to the garage.
Choosing a Garage Floor Covering
One addition to help a refurbished garage is interlocking PVC floor tiles. Adding these tiles is an easy way to the floor. Tiles create an attractive, comfortable, and slip-resistant surface. We used durable, environmentally friendly tiles from Norsk made of 100% recycled materials.
The 18-inch x 18-inch tiles have a raised diamond grid pattern for better traction. They snap together, and you can cut them with a utility knife for custom fits.
Installing a Storage Container Rack
Plastic storage containers neatly organize smaller items. When stacked, they make it difficult to access boxes that aren’t on top. So, we built a rack that allows containers to slide in and out for easy access.
The rack has 2 x 4 framing with 1 x 2 cleats to hold containers in place. This DIY storage solution keeps things organized for quick retrieval.
We also built a large sliding drawer with 1 x 4 sides and a plywood bottom. That lets the owners take advantage of an unused nook. Casters on the bottom and legs on one end allow the drawer to roll in and out smoothly. A handle on the leg end offers an easy grip.
