Chelsea and Susan use Giani Wood Look Paint (in English Oak) to transform the garage door’s appearance and enhance the entire home’s exterior.

Everything they need is in the $70 kit, and the process is easy. They just sand the garage door, add a base coat, and then the top coat, and let dry.

Paint Front Door

We give the front door a facelift and new look with a paint job. Learn how to paint a door here.
We also paint the shutters Espresso Bean and apply bronze caulk on the bottoms of the front windows. The new caulk will keep these windows weathertight.

Clean and Mulch Front Flower Beds

The bushes in the front are overgrown, so we trim those just a bit. And we fill the flower beds with rubber mulch recycled from tires; it lasts for many years without fading, and it’s safer than wood chips.

Replace Light Fixtures

We remove the Steins’ old carriage lights so we can update them — and Barker will love these, because the lights and a motion detector light we’re installing are LED models, so Barker won’t ever have to change bulbs.

We also:
• Tightened a front gutter
• Repaired a crack on the sidewalk with Quikrete Crack Repair

Post-Production Thoughts

The look of Barker and Susan’s home hadn’t changed since the late 1970s, and they wanted to reduce the maintenance it required in their retirement years ahead. So, we started with the biggest job first: a new roof. This metal roof will not only protect them from hurricane-force winds in their coastal location, it just looks great! The random shake pattern suits the architecture, and the rich color — which complements the other building materials — is guaranteed for 30 years.

The new mulch in the front beds gives them a bold, clean look that won’t wash away or decompose in the years ahead.

Updating the finishes on the shutters, front door and garage door adds a fresh look and coordinates well with both the new roof and other existing surfaces.

And by sealing the freshly cleaned sidewalk and drive, we’ve reduced the frequency of pressure-washing them — from months to years.
