Memorial Day is a time to remember U.S. military personnel who died while serving our country. The holiday is observed annually on the final Monday in May, following a weekend that’s unofficially coined “the beginning of summer.”

We think this holiday weekend should be spent honoring our country’s heroes and paying respect to the lives lost in service.

Alabama

Visit the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile to learn about the contributions of American veterans. The museum features multiple war memorials, an artillery pavilion, tanks, aircraft displays, and historic battleships.

Entry to the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial is $6 for children under 11, $18 for adults, and $15 for seniors 55 and up. Veterans pay $15 for entry, and active-duty military personnel get in for free.

If you’re eager to kick off summer, visit Point Mallard Park for fun in the sun.

Located in Decatur, Point Mallard Park is the perfect place to spend the day biking, swimming, or camping. The park features a water park, golf course, bike trail, ice complex, and more.

Point Mallard Water Park tickets are $28 for ages 12 and up. Seniors and kids under 11 can enter for $23.

Fort Gaines is another one of Alabama’s Memorial Day attractions. 

Located at Dauphin Island, Historic Fort Gaines is “one of the key sites in the famous Battle of Mobile Bay.” Explore the site and view gun mounts, canons, and barracks from the War of 1812.


Alaska

Spend a day of your holiday weekend at the Anchorage Market

This free event at the Dimond Center Mall in Anchorage includes over 100 vendors selling artwork, jewelry, local honey, and clothing.

Drop by for a quick bite if you can’t spend a whole day exploring the market. Local food vendors serve fresh seafood and Alaskan cuisine. The event also features live performances from various artists, including buskers and clogging groups.

Visit the Jewell Gardens in Skagway for a perfect holiday weekend getaway. 

Located in the Garden City of Alaska, Jewell Gardens is an organic show garden, glassblowing gallery, and wedding venue.

This museum in Fairbanks is one of the first vintage car museums in the U.S. It features over 100 classic vehicles and thousands of fashion pieces from the 18th, 19th, and mid-20th centuries.

Arizona

Start your Memorial Day weekend at Arizona’s Lake Havasu State Park.

Located in Lake Havasu City, the park is a beautiful place to kick off summer with beach basking, trail hiking, and camping. The park has boat ramps, campsites, beach cabins, picnic areas, and hiking trails for you and your family to enjoy.

Entry to the park is $20 per vehicle on weekends and holidays. Admission for individuals or bikers is $3.

Honor fallen military aviators with a visit to the Commemorative Air Force Museum in Mesa.

The Commemorative Air Force Museum aims to educate visitors on the contributions of military aviators to the nation’s freedom. For $15 or less per person, you and your family members can explore the museum and appreciate the museum’s operational hangar and display of bombers and cargo planes. Tombstone is a small city in Arizona, affectionately known as “the town too tough to die.”

Arkansas

Start your Memorial Day weekend at the Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View.

The park celebrates traditional Ozark music, crafts, and culture by offering visitors the “opportunity to watch artisans work, stroll through the Heritage Herb Garden, and hear live Southern mountain music.”

Take a weekend trip to the Arkansas Air and Military Museum for Memorial Day. 

The museum is located in Fayetteville and features military aircraft, aviation artifacts, and memorabilia from decades of wars. The Arkansas Air and Military Museum’s hangar was once the home of WWII training posts for American soldiers.

Admission pricing is $10 for adults, $5 for ages 6 to 16, and free for kids under 6. Veterans and active military personnel get in for $9.

Animal lovers and kids will love a holiday weekend trip to the Little Rock Zoo.

The zoo is one of Arkansas’ many treasures, featuring over 200 species of animals. Kick off summer right with a visit to Little Rock Zoo’s reptile house, tropical bird exhibit, and safari market. Then, finish the day with a ride on the park’s antique carousel. Zoo entry is $9.95 for kids 3 to 12 years old and $12.95 for ages 13 and up. California

Head to Santa Monica for the annual MAINopoly: A Taste of Main Street event.

Colorado

Spend your Memorial Day getaway at the Botanica Grand Lawn in Wichita Gardens.

The orchard is holding a Memorial Day Festival to kick off the unofficial start of summer. Spend the holiday picking berries, eating festival food, and greeting critters at the petting zoo. 

Tickets for field access and the children’s playground start at $6.

Old Friends horse farm in Georgetown is a must-visit Kentucky destination.

The farm provides Kentucky Derby racehorses with a place to retire safely. Visit Old Friends for a guided tour through the grounds and the opportunity to meet award-winning horses.

This family-friendly concert series features local artists, musicians, breweries, and food trucks. There’s no better way to start your summer than with a day of live performances and delicious cuisine in the fresh air. 


Maine

Take a weekend trip to Acadia National Park for a Memorial Day you won’t forget. 

The park is overflowing with granite peaks, woodland walkways, and rocky beaches to explore. You might even spot a bear or moose on your drive through the park.

After bird-watching, hiking, and swimming through Acadia, stop for a bite in Bar Harbor. This charming coastal town is the perfect place to relax and take in the beauty of Maine.

Maryland

The Sowebo Arts and Music Festival is a summer kick-off event in Baltimore. 

The annual festival is about “bringing together local music, visual artists, entertainers, great food, neighbors, and fun for all ages.” This event is sure to create a memorable Memorial Day weekend in Maryland.

Sowebo Fest features hundreds of local artisans and crafters ready to show off their work. After browsing the festival’s impressive array of local art, stop by one of the event’s three stages for a full lineup of musical talent. The festival is free and open to the public.

Don’t forget to stop by Baltimore’s Fort McHenry National Monument for a unique patriotic experience. 

Fort McHenry is famous for its defense during the 1812 Battle of Baltimore – a victory that inspired “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The park will host a full-day event titled Decoration Day: Remembering the Civil War Origins of Memorial Day on May 28.

Massachusetts

Head to Boston for the Boston Calling Music Festival

This three-day annual event is an excellent getaway idea for pop rock and indie music fans. In addition to over 50 live music performances, the festival will include various delicious food options, life-sized games, and art exhibits. 

Watch artists light up the stage from a seat in the festival’s 100-foot-tall Ferris wheel. This year’s headliners are Metallica, the Foo Fighters, and The Strokes – so tickets will go fast. 

Head to Battleship Cove Maritime Museum in Fall River for an educational Memorial Day experience.

Battle Cove is a museum and memorial “featuring the world’s largest collection of World War II naval vessels.”

The museum will hold a Memorial Day ceremony that’s open and free to the public. The event will include a traditional military observance to honor those lost in the service.

Active-duty military personnel and veterans can enjoy free entry to the museum on Memorial Day.

Plan a tour of Boston’s Freedom Trail for an outdoor learning experience. 

The Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile trail that meanders through Boston’s most historically significant neighborhood. Stroll through 11 historical sites along the famous route as a historically costumed tour guide educates you on each area’s significance.

You’re sure to feel patriotic while walking past the site of the Boston Massacre and Bunker Hill Monument.


Michigan
