To-Do #5: Clean Refrigerator Coils

You can save as much as $100 a year on your power bill by vacuuming the refrigerator coils regularly! The coils can be found either on the back of the fridge or underneath the unit behind the kickplate.

To clean hard to reach coils under a fridge:

  1. Cover one end of a cardboard gift wrapping tube with duct tape.
  2. Punch holes in the side of the tube.
  3. Attach the open end of the tube to a vacuum cleaner.
  4. Remove the kickplate on the refrigerator.
  5. Turn the vacuum on and run the cardboard tube back and forth under the fridge to vacuum out any dust bunnies.

If the refrigerator coils are on the back, pull the fridge out from the wall to allow access, then clean them using a vacuum cleaner brush attachment. Be sure to unplug your fridge any time you’re moving it or vacuuming the coils.

  4. When cleaning the refrigerator coils, go the extra distance and clean the refrigerator fan as well. On my old model, it’s accessed at the back of the unit, at the bottom, and requires removal of a couple of screws. Those fans can become nearly clogged with dust, dirt, and pet hair over time. Cleaning them can really improve the performance of the refrigerator. Mine stopped switching on as often, which saved on the electric bill. MUST UNPLUG REFRIGERATOR BEFORE DOING COILS OR FAN!!!

  8. JC Regarding dirty AC coil, you can buy a coil cleaning solvent at Home Depot or most hardware stores. Follow the instructions, removing the solvent with low pressure water (garden hose), which will drain out your overflow pan.
