Dust mites breed very rapidly, and just one of them can leave behind over 2000 pieces of fecal material including dust particles covered with partially digested enzymes from their gut in a matter of weeks.  All this contributes to a wide variety of allergic reactions such as wheezing and skin problems.

They’re not quite as bad as bed bugs though, but they’re close.

    What Are Dust Mite Covers?

Encasing covers that zip up around the entire mattress of your bed.

While they do not eliminate dust mites completely, dust mite covers are designed to keep dust mites and their allergens completely away from you.

This is accomplished in one of two ways; by a super tight weave in the fabric of the cover, or by using plastic to make it airtight.

Often known as “allergen-impermeable” covers, dust mite covers are special bedding products designed specifically with dust mites in mind.  True dust mite covers aren’t concerned with anything else.

    Did You Know

Dust mites are not really insects. They are categorized as arachnids alongside spiders, shrimp, crabs, and lobsters.

The video below provides a closer look at these microscopic unwanted guests.

How Can You Protect Yourself from Dust Mites?

There are several things you can do to protect yourself from dust mites.  Here are a few of them in no particular order.

    • Encase your mattress, box springs, and pillows with dust mite covers.
    • Vacuum weekly.  Use a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA Filter.  That will keep the dust mites in the vacuum.
    • Wash all the bedding at least once a week.  Make sure the water is at least 130ºF and dry them on high heat.
    • Get rid of all bedding that has feathers in it.
    • Use only pillows and bedding that are stuffed with synthetic fibers.
    • Avoid using comforters.  If you have to use them, wash them separately once a week in hot water and dry on high heat.
    • Use hardwood, tile, or linoleum instead of carpet.  Wash throw rugs just as you do the bedding.
    • Don’t lay the carpet directly on concrete.  Always use plastic and padding under it.
    • Wet mop at least once a week.
    • Keep the humidity in your house below 50%.
    • Use damp clothes when dusting to prevent stirring up dust and allergens.

    5 Best Dust Mite Covers

As a quick recap, here are the five dust mite covers we looked at.

    1. Bamboo Mattress Protector
    2. SureGuard Mattress Encasement
    3. PlushDeluxe Premium Mattress Encasement
    4. SafeRest Mattress Encasement
    5. Mission Allergy Dust Mite Cover

Our #1 pick went to the Bamboo Mattress Protector, but some of the others might be more suited to your needs.

Be sure to take a look at the Allersoft Pillow Protector who don’t need a full mattress protector, but only something to protect their pillows.

    Bamboo Mattress Protector

This premium mattress protector provides the comfort you desire while keeping water, dirt, and mites from damaging your mattress. It’s made from the finest quality bamboo fabric that resists water spills, urine stains, and pet hair.

It fits perfectly over every type of mattress, including memory foam and latex. This quality mattress topper is noiseless and comes in every size imaginable, including Cal King.

The Bamboo Mattress Protector is made from soft, breathable material, and it comes with a full 10-year warranty.

    Comfortable
    Stain-resistant
    Fits all mattresses
    10-year warranty
May not work against the worst stains

    SureGuard Mattress Encasement

This SureGuard Mattress Encasement will protect you and your family from harmful dust mites. It also guards against liquids, stains, bed bugs, and allergens. This waterproof mattress protector is ideal for those with children, older adults with incontinence, or those who experience frequent bed bug infestations.

The soft, durable terry cloth surface provides six-sided protection from liquid spills, urine, and sweat. The waterproof backing resists liquids while remaining fully breathable. And it does all this without any plastic noise.

The SureGuard Mattress Encasement uses a bed bug-resistant zipper to seal off these nasty pests from your mattress. It also has an advanced membrane that blocks bed bugs from infesting your mattress. Both of these features allow you to have a better night’s sleep.

    Waterproof
    Hypoallergenic
Blocks dust mites and bed bugs
    Machine washable
May not protect against the heaviest leaks
    Zipper prone to breakage

    PlushDeluxe Premium Mattress Encasement

It’s perfect for families with small children or older adults suffering from incontinence. It blocks liquids, urine, and sweat. And the soft, breathable material prevents overheating.

The PlushDeluxe Premium Mattress encasement is backed by an industry-leading 10-year warranty. If you’re not fully satisfied with your purchase, you can return it for a full refund or replacement.

    Made of soft, breathable material
    Waterproof
Resists dust mites and bed bugs
    No crinkly plastic
    10-year warranty
May not prevent all bed bugs from escaping

    SafeRest Mattress Encasement

SafeRest has an encasement design covering the entire mattress. The zipper is called a Micro-zipper with very fine teeth to prevent bugs from getting through it.

The zipper also seems to be the main problem in the newer models of this cover. Older models work the way the manufacturer claims, but the newer ones have some serious problems with the zipper.

You have to be extra careful and slow with it or it’ll bust on you before you get it on the first time.  Once it’s on you’re in good shape. But getting there shouldn’t be such a hassle.

Like many other mattress covers, it’s made from a hypoallergenic cotton terry that breathes fairly well.  It also claims to be noiseless, but like other mattress covers, that’s not entirely true.  The quest for a waterproof, truly noiseless mattress cover still continues.

    Covers the entire mattress
    Hypoallergenic material
    Micro-zipper prevent bug movement
    Micro-zipper is easy to break
    Still makes some noise

    Mission Allergy Dust Mite Cover

The Mission Allergy Dust Mite Cover makes use of microfiber technology to make it one of the softest mattress covers available. Designed by a board-certified allergist, it blocks 100 percent of dust mite allergens.

This silky-soft mattress cover is made from tightly woven microfiber polyester that resists liquid spills and stains. It boasts an extra-long zipper, bound seams, and an interior zipper flap.

The Mission Allergy Dust Mite Cover is manufactured using only top-quality materials, and it comes with a lifetime warranty.
