The “Today’s Homeowner” TV show annually asks viewers to share their home improvement to-do lists for a chance to “Win Danny and His Crew For a Day.”
In 2018, Becky West, of Santa Rosa, California, won the Win Danny contest.
Becky said she learned about the contest the first day she started following Today’s Homeowner’s Facebook page.
She had a list of projects ready for “Today’s Homeowner” hosts Danny Lipford and Chelsea Lipford Wolf to tackle, and America’s favorite father-daughter home improvement duo added some of their own.
The Projects
Repair the stone walkway. The front yard’s flagstone walkway has cracks and missing stones. Becky and Chelsea mix mortar while Danny dry-fits flagstones in the path’s irregular-shaped holes. Next, Danny and Becky trowel in missing mortar around stones that need it. After the grout dries, they clean it thoroughly.
We applied Custom Building Products’ Aqua Mix Stone Deep Clean to Becky’s damp flagstone walkway, scrubbed the surface, and watched the dirt wash right off.
Then we used two coats of Custom Building Products’ Aqua Mix Sealer’s Choice Gold. The water-based sealer penetrates the stones and mortar to protect the surface from all kinds of stains. It leaves a no-sheen, natural look.
Replace the spray irrigation system. First, Becky and Chelsea add plants to beautify the surrounding area. An invasive grass had threatened the area, but we removed all of its roots and planted a flower bed in its place. Next, Becky and Chelsea help arrange the new irrigation system’s tubing on the front lawn and add mulch to hide the tubing.
Accent the garage and front door. Becky’s screen security door has rust on it, so she and Chelsea prep it and spray paint it before adding accent colors. Lightly sanding off the rust helps prevent more rust from forming. Next, Chelsea and Becky use a paintbrush to apply orange paint on the garage’s raised panels and the home’s front door. They use a roller to apply orange paint on the front door.
Repair the pond pump. Danny uses a submersible pump to remove stagnant water and place it in a nearby drain. After removing all the dirty water, he fills the pond with clean water, connects landscape tubing to the submersible pump, and activates the waterfall.
Install a new outlet and light switches. We installed a receptacle from Leviton that includes both Type A and Type C USB connections. Then we installed a Renu light switch that allows Becky to change the switch and cover, to match her changing décor or preferences, without using tools.

We had more projects, so don’t miss this week’s episode of “Today’s Homeowner” to see them all!
