Pleated Retractable Screen for Doors Saves Space

The accordion design of the pleated retractable screens from Phantom Screens on display at the International Builders’ Show allows the screen to takes up less space in the doorway. The low profile threshold on the screen track reduces tripping and makes for easy wheelchair access.

Another cool product at the show was a tilt up garage door screen from Breezy Living Screen Solutions that allows you lower the screen when using the garage as an outdoor room, then raise it to provide access for cars.

Speaking of retractable screens, the folks at Phantom are expanding the possible applications for this category. If you have an opening at your home that you would love to screen in, but you don’t want the screen there all the time, then a retractable screen is a perfect way to go.

Now, this particular one from Phantom Screens has got a lot of really cool features in it. First of all it’s pleated into kind of an accordion design. And one of the big advantages there is it takes up very little room as it retracts into its housing. You know if you had a regular spool it would take up a lot of room on this side of the opening.

Also, it has almost a nonexistent threshold, a track on the bottom of it. Which the big advantage there is that you won’t be tripping over it, and it makes it very easy if you’re using a wheelchair to wheel in and out. That way you can really enjoy closing in a large opening and let the outside in without letting the bugs in.

If you’re interested in keeping bugs out of the garage, Breezy Living has an interesting option to do that, conveniently and inexpensively.

  1. I have retractable screens and am very eager to learn how to clean them. I live on the island of Paros, Greece. I am exposed to a North wind and dirt roads. My screens are dirty and have become stiff from dirt, humidity, and constant wind blowing them out of the track, top and bottom. I have gently used the vacuum to clean them but they are far from clean and fresh. I also tried spraying them with WD-40. Any help would be much appreciated!

  2. I cannot find the ordering or pricing of the pleated retractable screen. When you go to Phantom all you see is the spindle type retraction.

  3. Do you have pleated garage door screens? I would need for I think a 14×7 opening. I would like something that’s either pleated or that can roll up like a window shade and of course be inexpensive. I really don’t want the screen door that lifts up because we converted that garage into a guest house and we put a beautiful ceiling in it that I don’t want covered up. Thank you for your time,

    • Hi, JoAnn,
We don’t sell construction products, but we encourage checking your local home center for these materials.
      Good luck!

  4. My door had to be pulled off yesterday for an emergency. I do not know how to put it back and cannot find my old directions. Help please
