Attic Insulation

Homeowners ask me all the time how to control their monthly utility bills. According to the Department of Energy, 50-70% of the energy used in the average American home goes toward heating and cooling. But, by properly insulating the attic, you can reduce the amount of energy used and, reduce your monthly utility bills.

The older your home is the more likely it is that you need more insulation. If you can see the tops of the ceiling joists in your attic, then you probably need more insulation. It can be purchased in rolls or mechanically blown into the attic. The Department of Energy has guidelines that show you exactly how much insulation is needed in specific regions.

  1. i have vermiculite beneath my living room (garage ceiling) my living room is very cold. can i place r30 insulation over it?

also, my pipes froze this winter and i plan to wrap my pipes with rubber foam but i am still confused with the direction of the paper side of the insulation. against the concrete where my water pipes are or faced in towards the basement.
    thank you
