Wooden staircase balusters often shrink and become loose in their mortises.
To tighten up a loose baluster, wipe wood glue onto a flat wooden toothpick and force it up into the hole at the top of the baluster.
Depending on the size of the gap, you may need to insert more than one toothpick!
