How to Lighten a Home Built with Dark Wood

Here’s a question from our 4/20/2019 Today’s Homeowner Radio Show.

Patsy from Colorado says, “I own an 892-square-foot cottage at the base of Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. It was built in the 1940s. The ceilings, walls, and floors are all original wood and my patio is full of huge red rocks. I would like to know how to brighten up the cottage. With all of that wood, it is dark.”

We say paint at least one surface, maybe the ceiling. Consider introducing light colors into the room to brighten it up.

  1. How to lighten a dark room with wood go Scandinavian look up Carl Larson 1 I would paint the wood between the beams white. 2 Pick a wall where the bed will go an lightly sand the wood then take white paint mixed with alot of water to make it more of a stain and then wipe the paint on. 3 I notice wood folding doors u might want to take them down if on a closit and maybe just use curtains in the pattern or color of your sheets pillow case etc. 4 If u take down the folding doors recycle them by painting them a bright light color and turn them into a head board for your bed no need to throw them out as they look like they are in great shape. 5Look in Salvation Army or flee markets and buy some baskets paint them light bright colors and put in some Daisy’s to lighten the look of the room and bring in some of nature’s bounty. PS. I LOVE THE ROOM SO DO NOT REMOVE THE PANEL.
