Recipe for Removing Wallpaper

Spackle vs. Joint Compound

Anni has been doing some drywall repair and she has plenty of leftover spackle. She’s wondering if spackle can be used interchangeably with joint compound.

Although it’s tempting to use spackle as opposed to joint compound for all drywall repairs because of its faster drying time, it’s best to stick with joint compound for a major repair.

Spackle is best used for smaller holes and hairline cracks. The dry time for joint compound is anywhere from 12 to 24 hours, but with this longer dry time, you get a stronger hold for your bigger fixes.

Removing a Kitchen Wall to Open Up Space

Many older homes have kitchens that are walled off from the living area. Removing a wall can make your home look more modern and feel more open and inviting.

However, not all walls can be removed. Take, for instance, a load-bearing wall. By its name, this type of wall literally bears the load of the weight of the house, meaning if it’s removed, your house could collapse.

Removing a load-bearing wall is not a DIY home project. Always consult with a structural engineer that routinely works with contractors or reach out to a local or the original manufacturer for advice.
