Simple Way to Keep Your Putty Knife Clean

Putty knives come in many different sizes, and they’re great for spreading and applying all kinds of materials, including joint compound, putties, glue, auto body filler, and caulk. But, if you don’t clean the putty knife after every single use, it doesn’t take long before too many materials collect on the knife.

The materials will dry on the putty knife, and you have to grind or scrape them to get them off. To avoid that, all you need is some packing tape, wide enough to cover your putty knife.

In a Simple Solutions segment of Today's Homeowner, Joe Truini demonstrates how to use packaging tape to make cleaning your putty knife much easier.
Packing tape is all you need to change the way you clean your putty knife.

Pull off a piece long enough to go around the blade. You don’t have to cover the entire blade, but cover at least more than half of it. Press the packing tape down on one side and repeat on the other. Folding the little tab on one end will make it easier to remove the tape when you’re done.

Now, after you use your putty knife, all you need to do is peel the tape off to clean it!
