Here’s a tip for patching a hole in drywall:

  • Start by using a drywall saw to cut a square around the hole.
  • Get an extra piece of drywall and cut a patch 2 inches larger than the hole on all sides.
  • Turn the patch over and score four lines, snap it, and peel off the gypsum core. What you’re left with is a square of drywall attached to the center of the paper.
  • Spread some drywall joint compound on the back of the paper and plug it in the square you cut out of the wall.
  • Smooth out the paper with a taping knife and let dry overnight.
  • Sand, prime and paint the patch.
