Aug. 20, 2018 — In recognition of World Mosquito Day, Terminix today announced the cities with the worst mosquito problems, and the Dallas-Fort Worth area came in at No. 1.
Dallas topped the list for the second consecutive year, followed by New York City, Washington, D.C. and Houston. The list was generated based on the number of mosquito services rendered by Terminix between July 1, 2017 and July 1, 2018.

While many may think of mosquitoes as little more than a nuisance, these pests can transmit serious diseases, including West Nile and malaria, prompting the World Health Organization to name the mosquito the world’s deadliest animal.
How to Deal With Mosquitoes
Homeowners can help reduce the number of mosquitoes in their backyards with these tips:
Some mosquitoes need standing water in order to lay their eggs. Remove open containers, buckets, plastic sheeting or covers, and tires that can harbor standing water to help reduce potential breeding sites.
Maintain gutter systems and downspouts to remove leaves and other debris that can build up and lead to water retention.
Empty or replace the water in outdoor pet bowls, fountains, birdbaths, rain barrels and plant containers to help break the mosquito breeding cycle.
Mosquitoes, like many insects, can be attracted to light. Special bulbs called “bug lights” emit a different type of light than typical light bulbs. Replace outdoor lighting with these “bug lights” to help attract fewer mosquitoes.
