Summer Home Maintenance To-Do List

Using a pump up sprayer to remove mold and mildew from eaves on house.

Outdoor Summer House Cleaning

  • Mold and Mildew: Summer heat and humidity can cause mold and mildew to grow on the outside of your home. To remove it, scrub with a diluted bleach solution or trisodium phosphate. Be sure to protect plants and shrubs before cleaning, and prune them away from the house to help prevent future mold growth.
  • Air Conditioner Drain Line: To prevent water from backing up in your home, it’s important in the summer to clean the AC drain line regularly with bleach. If the drain does become clogged, use a wet/dry shop vac to remove the clog, then pour a cup of bleach down the access pipe to kill anything else that might be growing in there.
  • Clean Grill: It's cookout time! Get ready for summer barbecues by cleaning and repairing the gas grill. Scrub the grates with liquid grill cleaner, and clean the burners and burner covers with a wire brush. You can also use vinegar and aluminum foil to clean a grill. Use a toothpick to clean the holes on the burners to ensure even cooking.

  1. Just wanted to let you know that this widow really enjoys your show. You have given me help around the the house that I am able to do without hiring someone to do it. I live many miles from a large town where I could get help. I encourage everyone to keep up the good work helping people.
    I live in western Kansas.

  2. Hey, I Love your show. I want to know how can I take out mold out of my ceiling. It’s getting black and also it’s getting spread . I’m getting desperate, and I don’t want to be sick also my family. I wish can you come and fix a lot of stuff that are getting ugly, we can afford to expend a lot of money on the house.
    Thank you,
    Anabelle

  3. I love watching your show here in Pittsburgh!
I got my gutters replaced two years ago. Every time it rains my gutter leaks in the back corner and near the middle of the front of my house. I had the person who replaced my gutters come twice to fix it but all I hear is excuses and my gutters still leaks. I tried to have some contractors look at my gutters and they tell mine the job is too small to fix🤔 All I need is my gutters to be repitched so they can drain properly. What do you suggest….. Know any good contractors here in Pittsburgh?

  4. I have a 1400 sq. ft. house that is only 6 years old. I bought it new, but with no appliances in it, so it had no weight on the house while it sat unoccupied for a year. When the weather turned cold, about 3 months after we moved in, we noticed the screws pulling through the sheetrock near the center of the house. Then we started noticing one part where there was a wall separating from the ceiling, leaving a 1/32″ crack. I left it until I could get to it, since it didn’t seem to be getting any worse. Next thing I know it was hot weather again and the crack had disappeared, only to come back again when it got cold. There is humidity under the house causing the duct to sweat. I was told that there is not enough air movement and to put fans under there to remove the humidity. Will this stop the house from settling and raising?

    • Hi, Lyle,
Danny says, “What you’re experiencing is expansion and contraction, not settling. And it’s very common in almost all houses.
Additional insulation in the attic, especially over the concerned areas, generally will reduce or eliminate any of your expansion and contraction.
Thanks for your question, and good luck!”
