Building a custom shoe rack like this one is a simple way to maximize closet space. The size you build will depend on the exact dimensions of the space you have available. Here we have a narrow space at the front of the closet.
- Using 1×8 lumber, cut the individual shelves all the same length. That dimension should accommodate the width of a pair of shoes.
- Cut the vertical piece the height of the closet (this one is 7 feet tall).
- Attach the shelves to the vertical piece. We spaced the shelves evenly, but you can adjust the spacing to accommodate taller shoes and boots.
- Move the unit to the closet. With the vertical piece firmly on the floor, level each individual shelf and mark its location on the inside door trim of the closet.
- Notch out each of these marks. We used an oscillating saw and chisel for this job.
- Slip the one-legged shelf unit into place and secure with nails.

Here we have a narrow space at the front of the closet so we’re using one by eight lumber.
From it, we’re cutting a number of individual shelves at the same length. That dimension should accommodate the width of a pair of shoes. These individual shelf pieces are nailed to another, longer one by eight.
This vertical one by eights about seven feet long in our closet. We’re spacing them evenly but you can adjust that for taller shoes if necessary. Once the shelves are attached on one side, the unit is moved into the closet in order to mark support notches on the end of the shelves. With the vertical piece firmly on the floor, each individual shelf is leveled before its location is marked on the inside door trim of the closet.
Next, each of these marks is notched out. We’re using an oscillating saw and a chisel for this job. Once the notches are clear the one-legged shelf unit can be slipped into place and secured with nails.
