Note: In July 2024, SunPower notified dealers it would be halting all new shipments and project installations. The company also noted it would “no longer be supporting new Leases and PPA sales nor new project installations of these financing options.”

Depending on your home needs and budget, there are different things to prioritize when choosing a solar provider. No matter what your situation, these are a few essentials in your search for a source of clean energy:

Momentum Solar

3.9

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
No current offers available.

Momentum Solar has exploded onto the scene over the last 10 years and is popular for the quality of its panels and the simplicity of its purchasing process. This company is an excellent option for consumers who expect quick response times and high-level customer service. Real customer testimonials praise the company for its honest assessments of homeowners’ needs rather than upselling and pushing unnecessary auxiliary services.

From highly local representatives to a fully functioning mobile app, Momentum has an impressively smooth process for resolving customer complaints and getting solar systems operational. It avoids relying upon outside solar installation companies and third parties for maintenance, so you can count on in-house labor when your panels are installed and worked on. Its concierge service means you work with the same person throughout the installation process, so you’ll have unprecedented and highly personalized customer service access.

As a regional company, Momentum benefits from a less broad geographical focus and can anticipate the average Texas consumer’s options and needs. Its installers are all local, so they’ll have a deep understanding of the ways Texas solar incentives differ from El Paso to Austin and how to take advantage of your local utility company.

One of the biggest drawbacks of Momentum is that it doesn’t offer in-person estimates for solar costs or benefits in Texas. It can be difficult to ascertain what types of panels you need, how many you should buy, and how much you’ll save on your energy bill without that personal estimation visit. Another drawback – it can take a long while for solar rebates included in the proposal to land in your account. Companies like Sunrun do a bit better at making sure your funds arrive promptly.

Momentum offers a wide variety of solar panels from industry-leading manufacturers such as LG, SunPower, and Silfab. Its options range from standard to premium panel selections, so you can base your decision on your home’s specific energy costs and needs. While not as efficient as the panels offered by Sunpower, all the manufacturers it works with make super-efficient monocrystalline panels and have been building solar panels for more than five years.

Here are a few of the special perks Momentum offers:

  • Battery Storage
  • Enphase Microinverters

Check out this customer’s breakdown of how easy it was to install Momentum’s solar system and how his panels have been performing.

Momentum offers solar leases, loans, purchases, and power purchase agreements (PPAs). We like that it provides leases with zero-dollar down payments for homeowners looking for lower up-front costs. However, you should 100% make a cash purchase if you’ve got the money saved up: Momentum will give you a substantial discount and you’ll save loads in the long run.

Momentum offers 25 years of warranty for equipment and workmanship, so you’ll be in good hands should disaster strike or a panel break down. This is as long a warranty as you can find in the Texas market and has no real rival. However, Momentum won’t guarantee its panel’s performance like Blue Raven, ADT, and SunPower, so customers will incur more risk than they have to. For example, if one of your panels produces 150 watts versus the 250 you expected, you won’t have any legal leeway to work with.

Best Customization Options

Trinity Solar

3.4

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
Earn $1,000 When You Refer a Friend To Trinity

If you’re looking to switch to solar power, Trinity offers a high-quality solar system for a very competitive price. With an excellent BBB rating of A+ and all the important certifications, this highly experienced company is a safe bet for any Texas resident interested in clean energy.

Trinity Solar is one of the best solar companies in Texas if you’re interested in choosing between a wide variety of solar power systems. Specifically, it has a huge selection of inverters and batteries you can customize to your heart’s content. Trinity has its own solar panel installation team and has been highly praised for how quick the process is. Our research found that some installations get finished in just one day. This is an amazing option if you don’t want to waste a weekend or take any time off work while your system is getting set up.

There are a few minor downsides to Trinity versus other solar companies in Texas. For one, we found that it is hard to get accurate pricing from the company online. There’s no mobile performance tracking, so if staying plugged into your home energy bill is a priority, you should look elsewhere. On top of this, it has a comparatively low workmanship warranty of only five years. If you’ve had roof trouble in the past and expect complications, we’d be wary of this warranty package. Sunrun protects against damage to your roof, and companies like ADT Solar offer much better protection against surprise installation costs.

Solar customers that want to fine-tune their home’s system are in luck. Trinity Solar has the best customization options in Texas. Its panels and batteries are manufactured by top providers like Q Cells, Tesla, and Generac, and it offers both monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels, all with a high energy efficiency of well over 20%. It also provides inverters from various companies, such as SolarEdge and Tesla.

If you’re looking for additional services, here’s what Trinity has available:

  • Tesla Powerwall Batteries
  • Enphase Microinverters

One of Trinity’s best financing options is a solar lease with $0 up-front. If you opt for a solar lease or a PPA, your money will go to Trinity itself. If you get a solar loan, you’ll owe payments to the loan provider instead. We believe a lease or PPA is best if you don’t own the home. However, remember that you won’t be able to take advantage of any federal solar tax incentives.

The limited warranty options for Trinity are a potential downside, but the quality of its panels and installation team should prevent this from becoming an issue. It offers a 5-year workmanship warranty and a 25-year product warranty, which is great protection from equipment costs but not very long if your home is damaged during installation. This is one of the worst workmanship warranties on our list, but you should notice damage to your roof from installation relatively quickly, so it’s not the biggest red flag.

Best Solar Financing

Blue Raven Solar

4.3

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
8 Months Free & $0 Down On Installation

Blue Raven goes further than its competitors in making solar power accessible to everyone. It designs its financing plans to give all homeowners a chance to buy its solar system rather than lease it. You won’t find a lower up-front cost anywhere in the Texas market. In fact, for the first 18 months, you won’t have to pay a cent.

Blue Raven’s mission statement is “we believe solar should be affordable for everyone,” and its financing options back this claim up. You’ll have a full year and a half of clean energy before you begin paying off the system, and there’s no penalty if you decide to pay the loan off early. We have yet to find another provider that offers a solar loan with such a low up-front cost. Combine this with top-tier customer service and a production guarantee, and there’s no surprise that this is one of Texas’s fastest-growing solar energy companies. From our research, we’ve observed a highly impressive pattern of resolving complaints as they occur. The company is more than willing to air on the side of the customer, sending reimbursements and repair teams as soon as issues pop up. Plus, if your solar panels don’t produce as much as promised, the company will upgrade your entire system for free.

While Blue Raven’s financing plans stand out in the Texas market, its offering of solar batteries and additional equipment remains fairly limited. If you’re looking for more than the solar system alone and are in the market for Tesla solar batteries or EV chargers, you’ll need to contract from Sunrun or ADT. If you aren’t looking for additional services, you’re still in a great place with this company.

Blue Raven works with various manufacturers, including Canadian Solar, SolarEdge, Axitec, and Trina. It produces Tier 1 monocrystalline panels, which last an average of 25-40 years and have relatively strong efficiency rates. Plus, it’s recently partnered with SunPower’s manufacturer Maxeon, which makes some of the most powerful solar panels in the country. While their panels have some of the highest efficiency on our list, we’re a little disappointed by how limited their suite of additional services is. Companies like Sunrun will offer EV chargers and multiple options for solar storage, but Blue Raven just offers the following services:

  • SunPower’s SunVault batteries
  • Enphase Microinverters

More than all of its competitors in Texas, Blue Raven encourages homeowners to own its solar systems. To make this possible, it offers one of the sweetest financing plans we’ve seen in the solar industry. If you qualify for the BluePower+ plan, you won’t have to pay a single bill for the first year and a half. It doesn’t offer lease options, but you shouldn’t need one with this all-star financial package.

Blue Raven offers a 25-year manufacturer warranty, which covers any defects in its solar technology. Remember, this policy still leaves the responsibility on the homeowner to keep the panels clean and undisturbed, but snow removal shouldn’t be a big issue if you live in San Antonio. Workmanship and maintenance costs are completely covered, and their warranty includes an industry-leading production guarantee as well.

Best Damage Protection

Sunrun

3.7

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
No current offers available.

If you want a solar system that you know will be protected, Sunrun is a great company to choose. It runs some of the best solar panels in Texas and an excellent leasing option. Plus, free maintenance is too good an offer to pass up: it’s one of the only companies I’ve seen that offers this.

We like Sunrun for their proactive method of maintaining solar panels and their generous warranty package. During the warranty period, or as long as you are leasing the system, they’ll cover the labor and equipment costs of anything that goes wrong. Amazingly, the Sunrun team will reach out to you if your production levels are below expectations and look for a way to remedy the problem proactively. This policy is hugely preferential to the common alternative of nagging customer service about sagging energy levels until it sends out a technician. This is rare to find anywhere, let alone in Texas. It’s one of the only companies in Texas willing to protect your roof from leaks. Sunrun also has a monitoring app that displays your energy production and use, so you can stay current on how well your system is functioning.

Our research told us that Sunrun is very responsive to customer complaints. However, we found that some customers experienced a lack of flexibility with the company regarding selling their homes and transferring the lease to its new tenants. If you’re unsure how long you’ll be staying where you live, this problem is worth discussing with your account manager at Sunrun. On top of this, the company doesn’t offer the strongest workmanship warranty, which means issues caused by poor installation won’t be covered unless they show up in the first 10 years.

Sunrun offers highly efficient monocrystalline panels from manufacturers like LONGi, boasting up to 21% efficiency. This solar panel supplier also provides a full suite of additional equipment, more than the bare bones package offered by companies like Momentum Solar.

  • Tesla Powerwall
  • LG Chem RESU
  • Ford Connected Charge Station
  • Brightbox Home Battery

Sunrun offers a monthly loan, lease, cash payment, and a full lease. The full lease is very similar to a PPA. For Sunrun, we recommend the monthly lease option, as this will allow you to take advantage of its strong free maintenance policy. Those who purchase the system outright will be responsible for replacing parts and repairing their roof as soon as the warranty period is up.

Sunrun does have a shorter warranty period than its top competitors in Texas, offering to fix your panels for free over 10 years rather than the 25 we look for. You’ll still have a full decade of top-tier maintenance coverage, but if a strong warranty is important to you, choose a company like ADT Solar. Sunrun’s roof penetration warranty does stand out as a positive.

Fastest-Growing Solar Provider

Vision Solar

3.7

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
Get $500 When You Refer Someone To Vision

While relatively new to the scene, Vision Solar is one of the best solar panel companies you can find in Texas. While its customer service can be lacking, the company offers one of the biggest steals on the Texas market. With such an affordable price point, this is an easy entry point into owning your own renewable energy system.

No matter how many appliances you like to run or how intense your energy needs, Vision Solar will take a huge load off your electric bill. It has a very streamlined consultation process, following a similar concierge model to companies like Momentum Solar and completing everything from design to activation within 30 days. They’’ll give you a free quote if you’re staring down an electric bill and want to explore clean energy solutions. Plus, Vision offers free monitoring to ensure that your solar roof stays in top form all year long. However, its wildly low price point makes Vision stand out the most from its competitors. The cost comes in near $2 per watt, which is well below the solar industry average of $3.16. With one of the most affordable solar energy systems in one of the sunniest states, denizens of Houston, Dallas, and all the rest of Texas can unlock some pretty big energy savings.

Out of the solar panel companies on our list, Vision Solar was scored the worst by the Better Business Bureau and sued for some of its unresolved complaints. The company has been accused of long wait times for quality inspection, so it can take a while before your panels are up and running. Some consumers were never able to connect their solar energy system to the grid and report waiting months before getting reimbursed.

Vision Solar relies on top-grade residential solar panel manufacturers like LG, SunPower, and Panasonic, all of which are known for great performance. It employs monocrystalline panels across the board which have a top-tier efficiency rating of 22.8%, making this one of the strongest systems on the Texas market.

Vision Solar offers everything from outright purchases to loans, leases, and PPA finance agreements. Its systems are usually bought through PPAs, and if you came to Vision for its low price, this will keep your monthly payments as low as possible. However, with a lower up-front cost than most solar companies statewide, ownership of your solar system is more accessible than ever and worth investing in.

Vision Solar offers a 25-year equipment warranty, covering every component of your solar system, from inverters to panels. While this is a highly impressive length of time, Vision is mostly just passing on the warranties offered by the manufacturers it supplies from. Regarding warranty, this places them in the middle of the crowd in our suite of Texas’ best solar companies.

Methodology: How We Rank Solar Companies

At Today's Homeowner, we strive to bring you the most transparent, accurate information for your home improvement projects. Our solar ratings emphasize what matters most to you—a wide range of energy-efficient panels, reputable and reliable installation, and comprehensive warranties.

Our ratings are based on publicly available information about each company, secret shopping online and over the phone, customer-review analysis, and interviews with solar industry experts.

A company can earn a maximum of 100 points across six categories, converted to a five-star scale. We researched and analyzed dozens of solar installers and developed the following formula:

  • Services Offered (20 points): What does each solar provider offer as a basic service with any solar installation plan? In-house labor led to companies being ranked higher than those that contracted their labor out to third parties. Similarly, battery installation and panel monitoring were key factors that we looked for in each provider.
  • Warranty Period (20 points): Solar warranties can cover labor, components, or both. The length of these warranty plans is of chief importance. Companies that offer 25-year warranty coverage got our highest score in this category.
  • Other Offerings (20 points): Solar companies that provide secondary services are rated highly. These include obtaining permits to operate (PTO), providing financing and price matching options, and mobile performance tracking options.
  • Company Reputation (15 points): Our main metrics for rating company reputation were Better Business Bureau (BBB) ratings and complaint response rate. These are reliable indicators of quality. Many of our best providers have a 100% complaint response rate.
  • Customer Service (15 points): Availability via phone and online is key for modern home service providers in any niche. Those that offer both, along with clearly posted business hours and in-person estimates, are rated highly.
  • Availability (10 points): Companies with availability in more than 40 states received our highest score in this category. We rated providers with a more limited presence progressively lower, depending on exact reach.

We monitor company data on an ongoing basis to keep rankings and information up to date.
