Vinyl siding and trim is a low-maintenance alternative to painted wood siding and trim. Vinyl siding is available in a smooth or textured surface in patterns that resemble wood lap siding as well as cedar shakes and board and batten.

Vinyl siding is also available with a foam backing that makes it more rigid and impact-resistant, as well as adding to the insulation value of your home.

When hiring a company to install vinyl siding, make sure they are reputable and experienced in dealing with vinyl siding and trim.

Also, make sure that the nails used to attach vinyl siding are left a bit loose to allow the siding to expand and contract with changes in temperature.

Danny Lipford: One challenge you have as a homeowner is to properly maintain the exterior of your home regardless of the weather conditions. Well, if you have a brick home that’s a good start, but almost every brick home has some surface on the outside that still has to be painted from time to time.

And if you have a house that’s all wood on the exterior, you’re probably already tired of scraping and priming and painting every few years to keep it looking nice. And if you’re having to pay to have that done, then that’s even worse.

That’s why vinyl siding and vinyl overhangs have become so popular. And they look so real, it’s hard to believe that this is not a real cedar shake gable.

Now, the most popular type of vinyl siding is a lap siding that’s available in either a smooth surface or a textured surface to make it look like different types of wood. But there’s also a new generation of vinyl siding that has a foam backing on it that makes it more rigid, more impact resistant; and, a big benefit, it makes your home more energy efficient because of the foam insulating qualities.

Now when vinyl siding is installed, you never drive the nail tight into the wood, because it needs a little bit of room to expand and contract with the changes in temperature. So if you’re ready to throw that paint brush away, you may think about vinyl siding.
