Toilet Overflow

We’ve all had that moment of anxiety when a toilet is about to overflow, and you just feel helpless to stop it. You question your decision to flush it twice when the first one didn’t quite do the job, and you realize it was a mistake as the water starts reaching up to the rim of the bowl. A cool head and quick action can avoid disaster, if you know what to do.

First, remove the tank lid and look for the hinged, rubber flush valve at the bottom. It is usually suspended by a chain from a rod connected to the flush handle. Simply close the valve by hand to stop water from continuing to enter the bowl.

Practice this when there isn’t an emergency, and you’ll know just what to do the next time an overflow is imminent.
