I want to install a mosaic tile backsplash. Can this be applied directly to drywall?

Harry in IL
I put down a self-sealing tile in my bathroom. It’s no more than ⅛” thick, maybe less. I was wondering if I could put grout in the joints and how do I keep it off the tile if I do?
