I’m trying to remove old sheet vinyl, but it keeps tearing and leaving a white paper backing behind. How can I get this up to put down new flooring?

We live in an old farmhouse- part of the basement is still dirt- we have been exploring raising the house- to put in functional basement- we also had another thought- my husband has just been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis- the most effective exercise would be swimming- have you ever heard of anyone putting a swimming pool in a basement as a renovation project? We are not even sure if this is possible.

I have a crawl space, but I don’t know how to locate the house main water line to shut off the water. Can you tell me how to find it? I called the water department and they want to charge $65.00 to shut it off from the street. I need to have it off to change the faucet. I don’t want to pay that, and I need to know how to locate it just in case of an emergency.

We recently had glue down wood floors put down in our living and dining rooms. The contractor used the glue like crazy and we are left with glue marks on almost every board. How can we remove the glue without damaging the wood?
