Grilling out is a given for a holiday weekend like the one coming up. But for many it raises the question…Which is greener…Charcoal or Gas? I know there are lots of you who swear by your charcoal grills and I have to confess they really give food some flavor. But the sad fact is that most of the stuff we buy to use in those grills is really a combination of sawdust, corn starch and lighter fluid. This kind of “Charcoal” gives off about eleven pounds of carbon dioxide an hour when it burns. A gas grill on the other hand generates only about five and a half pounds. The manufactured charcoal also releases about a hundred times more carbon MONoxide along with some other volatile organic compounds. So if you plan to grill “Green” this weekend…make it gas.
