Wondering about the best way to remove built-up mold, mildew and hard water from shower doors, tracks and shower floor tiles?

First, consider the source of these issues. Many old-fashioned shower doors have deep tracks where water can sit and clog up the weep holes. This creates the perfect condition for mold and mildew to grow.

The best way to remove mold and mildew is to start by cleaning your shower. To prevent any mold and mildew from returning, you can create your own homemade solution with 50% water, 50% white vinegar, and a couple of teaspoons of baking soda.

Spray this solution in your shower and let it sit. After a while, you can scrub it and repeat the process until all of the mold and mildew are removed. Once the shower is fully clean, spray the solution one last time and let it dry.

For hard-water deposits, there are a couple of different products or solutions you can use. You can either use a powder product called Iron Out Rust Stain Remover Powder, CLR: Calcium, Lime and Rust Remover, or you can make your own solution. For the homemade solution, you can either use straight ammonia or you can mix lemon juice and vinegar.

The best solution for keeping your shower from producing mold, mildew or hard-water deposits is to try and keep it as dry as possible.

Some solutions to keeping your bathroom dry include drying your shower with a towel after use, keeping the vent fan in your bathroom running for 15 minutes after you get out of the shower, and opening your windows in the summer months.

Another solution is Rain-X. This is normally used on car windows, but this can also be used on your shower door glass. It will help keep the soap scum from sticking to the shower door glass.

Simple Solutions

How to Make a Non-Toxic Oven Cleaner — Here’s a recipe for an effective non-toxic oven cleaner, with no noxious fumes. Add two orange peels to a jar and fill them with white vinegar. Let the jar sit for about a week. Use a funnel to pour the vinegar solution into a plant mister. Sprinkle baking soda on the oven and glass door, then spray the vinegar solution. Let sit for 20 minutes before wiping with a sponge.

Slick Trick for Applying Silicone Sealant — Pour some denatured alcohol into an empty spray bottle, and adjust the nozzle to produce a fine mist. Use a caulking gun to apply the silicone sealant. Then before smoothing out the silicone, lightly mist it with alcohol. Now, run your finger or a caulking tool along the silicone, you’ll end up with a perfectly smooth bead.
