When deciding on the color to paint a room in your home, keep the following tips in mind:
- Bedrooms benefit from cooler colors, such as greens and blues, since they have a calming effect that will help you relax.
- Rooms for entertaining—like a kitchen, living room, or den—are a good place to use warmer colors, such yellows and reds, to liven up a room.
- Neutral and lighter colors are great for opening up small spaces as well as blending colors from different areas together.
- Darker colors can make a bold statement, but they also can make a room seem smaller.

The interior of my house needs to be repainted and so I really appreciate the four tips that you put up above. There is one room that I want to paint the walls purple, but I hadn’t considered that it might make the room look smaller. Perhaps I will change the color scheme for that room to lavender so that it doesn’t seem so confining in there.
It is also a good idea to go for lighter colors when painting a kitchen. Warm colors are just as great, but light colors would work wonderfully too! I love the way white can really open up a space and make it appear larger and brighter. I would love for my kitchen to have that feel, so I think white would be the best option for that area of my home.
How do I paint baseboards and keep the paint off of the carpet?
I saved your email on tips for choosing colors when painting and now I am ready to paint. I want a blue gray paint, do you have any suggestions
for a light pastel paint for my bathroom and eventually i will paint my bedroom same color. I would like it to look on the bue side but with a gray in it too.
thanks
Diane
I need help in choosing paint colors for my living room which is very large, dark and paneled.
Thank you, Ronnie
Hi, Ronnie,
We recommend using The Home Depot’s Project Color app, https://www.homedepot.com/c/projectcolor, which lets you digitally ‘try on’ a paint color and see if it works in your space. Match colors and get inspired.
Good luck!
