How to Prime Exterior Wood Siding on Your Home

I’m considering replacing the old wood siding on my home with new pine siding. Would I gain any benefit from priming both sides of the boards? What should I use, oil or latex, to prime them? -Hal

Hi Hal,

I would strongly suggest priming the front, back, edges, and ends of your pine siding with an oil-based exterior primer before installation. Once the siding has been installed, apply two coats of a top of the line latex exterior house paint to it.

If you live in an area that has problems with mildew, I would add M-1 Mildewcide additive in every gallon of paint, including the primer.

Good luck with your project,

Danny

  1. Hi Dan:
I’m adding a 10 X 12 mud room to my home with pine shiplap siding. Is it better to paint both sides and the ends before installing or should I just do the exterior side and ends leaving the interior portion free of paint to release any future moisture? The woods been inside and outside building storage unit and may contain some moisture right now. Although it seems best to seal the whole board before installing I don’t want to seal in any moisture either. What to do?
