Founded in 2005 by a group of college students, College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving initially offered small moves and local junk removal jobs. In only two years, the company expanded with independent franchises throughout the United States and Southern Canada, establishing itself as a nationwide provider with a reputation for high-quality moves at lower prices.

So, how does College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving stack up against other moving providers? Keep reading for my comprehensive guide on this company’s pricing, services, moving options, customer reviews, and everything else you need to know before selecting a mover.

My Preferred Moving Companies

After hours of research, I’ve determined that College Hunks is a decent moving company for families who need quick service, junk removal, and donation pickup. However, while College Hunks has some strong points, such as next-day service and partnering with charities, it doesn’t rank as highly as the following providers.

My Review of College Hunks

Choosing College Hunks for its junk removal and moving services has many perks, including charitable contributions, same-day services, and easy scheduling. Unfortunately, this company’s customer reputation and ratings give me pause. During my research, I found many worrying reviews about miscommunication issues between the managing office and moving crew and pricing disputes, which are headaches I wouldn’t personally want to deal with on an already stressful day.

Overall, this provider stands out for the wrong reasons compared to other providers for its poor customer reviews, limited availability, and lack of specialty services. College Hunks would not be among my top choices for a moving provider.

My Review Scores for College Hunks

Reference our quantitative scoring breakdown of College Hunks moving company below. The gray line indicates the average score among dozens of moving companies, while the green line represents College Hunk’s specific score.

College Hunks Pros and Cons

Leading provider specializing in junk removal services of unwanted items
Prioritizes donating any usable furniture or items that have a chance at a second home, making this company less wasteful than many junk removal companies
Same and next-day services offer flexibility that many moving companies can’t match
Up-front pricing for all moves and cleanout services (no worries about hidden fees)
Only available in 38 states, unlike many nationwide providers who provide services to the entire contiguous U.S.
Lacks specialty moving services, such as packing for antique items or valuables

What I Liked and Didn’t Like

As someone interested in a moving provider, you’re undoubtedly looking for the best services at the best price possible, so keep reading for a detailed breakdown of different areas of College Hunk’s business and how this affected my overall rating.

Moving options include the types of moves a company handles and coordinates, such as if it provides local moves or specialized relocation services for corporate employees or members of the military.

What I Like

College Hunks offers local moves, corporate relocation, and long-distance moving services, which will meet most people’s needs. All the company “hunks” undergo in-depth move training to learn the best way to wrap and secure your personal belongings to prevent scratches, cracks, dings, and breaks, so you can rest easy knowing your items are fully protected. You can even hire College Hunks to help with a DIY move as it offers truck and pod loading and unloading solutions, a more unusual offering in the industry.

What I Don’t Like

If you’re interested in an international move, College Hunks can’t help you. It also doesn’t offer service to many states, so arranging a long-distance move may not pan out with this provider if one of the states is out of its service area. Compared to many other long-distance movers, this is a significant con that makes the process more complicated than necessary.

If you need help packing, disconnecting appliances, or moving fragile items like artwork, hot tubs, or musical instruments, you’ll want to choose a company with a large variety of additional services.

What I Like

The company is best known for its junk removal services, which go above and beyond most moving providers’ junk removal services because of its eco-friendly focus that prioritizes finding new homes for usable items. College Hunks’ website states up to 70% of everything its team hauls is recycled or donated — a significant improvement over most moving providers who don’t disclose what happens to items after junk removal. Some of the most frequently removed “junk” include furniture, mattresses, carpeting, appliances, scrap metal, tires, boxsprings, hot tubs, paint, and even office equipment.

What I Don’t Like

Compared to other providers, College Hunks has fewer additional services, such as specialty packing for valuables or vehicle shipping, which many homeowners rely on when making a significant move. This provider has excellent junk removal services, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anybody needing other specialty services due to its limited options.

A moving provider could be the best in the industry, but if it doesn’t provide service in your area or to where you’re moving, then you’ll need to evaluate other options.

What I Like

College Hunks provides moving services to 38 states, a greater service area than smaller movers. This provider comprises franchises, giving them over 160 locations throughout these states, so you’ll likely find a location close to you.

What I Don’t Like

College Hunks has limited availability compared to other nationwide providers, with no availability in 12 states. This is a significant con compared to providers like International Van Lines, which offers services to all states and many countries. Lastly, service profile and pricing vary from location to location, which makes coordinating a move more challenging.

Customer service is a critical factor when considering any service provider, as knowing how customers have been treated in the past will make a big difference in whether or not you choose a company.

What I Like

I like that College Hunks clearly states its moving and junk hauling processes online so customers know exactly what the day will look like step by step. After removing junk, the moving team even conducts a complimentary clean-up, so your home is left better than when they started.

Customers rave about the same-day and next-day service options, an unusual offering in an industry that typically requires booking several weeks in advance. Reviews also highlighted the customer’s positive experience with the young men who came to their home and the hard work they put into the job.

What I Don’t Like

Customer reviews brought up issues with communication between the booking agent and the College Hunks moving team. I found many reviews that noted that the customer asked for their items to be donated, but the team that arrived was not informed of this and only came prepared to remove the junk and dump it. These findings are hugely disappointing, especially from a company whose claim to fame is eco-friendly junk removal.

A provider’s reputation gives crucial insight into how it compares to its competitors and the name it has made for itself through charity, awards won, Better Business Bureau ratings, and more.

What We Like

After appearing on Shark Tank, College Hunks has made a strong name for itself in the industry. Over the last 15 years, the company has served millions of clients and grown into an INC 500 Company that has appeared on CNN, Oprah, Fox News, and USA Today. I also love how the company donates meals to children facing food insecurity through its partnership with US Hunger and partners with a domestic violence program, Goodwill Industries, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and PickUpMyDonation.com. College Hunks’ reputation for charity matters to me and many other homeowners, making this a significant plus.

What We Don’t Like

While the College Hunks website boasts high customer reviews, my research yielded less-than-ideal customer reviews on Yelp and Trustpilot. As of August 2023, College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving has a 2.3-star rating on Trustpilot and a 3.2-star rating on Yelp. Most concerning, I found that College Hunks has an F rating with the Better Business Bureau, the lowest score I’ve seen among the many moving providers I’ve reviewed. I wouldn’t personally be comfortable hiring this provider with these worrying ratings. However, it’s important to note that this company’s reviews vary dramatically based on the specific franchise, so check out reviews for your local franchise before making a final decision.

Video Overview of College Hunks

Watch the following video on College Hunks’ move day and junk removal process so you know what to expect during the moving process.

What Services Does College Hunks Offer?

College Hunks is best known for its junk removal services, but it also offers other home moving services.

Here are the services College Hunk franchises typically offer:

  • Hourly labor services for home or office projects (i.e., spring cleaning or moving your furniture around the home for a new look)
  • Hauling services
  • Junk removal, disposal, and donation
  • Light demolition
  • Moving labor (home staging and furniture reassembly)
  • Packing and unpacking services
  • Packing supplies
  • Recycling
  • Storage units
  • Truck loading and unloading for DIY moves

College Hunks’ specialized junk removal services are a standout in the industry. Still, it lacks specialty services other full-service moving companies offer, such as antique moving or vehicle shipping. If you have breakables or expensive artwork, antiques, musical instruments, or other items, I recommend looking into a full-service provider with specialty packing services.

How Much Does College Hunks Cost?

College Hunks is made up of franchises — and pricing differs between locations, which is frustrating for the budget-conscious homeowner. Factors such as type of services, distance of move, insurance coverage, moving supplies used, date of service, and location will affect your costs.

The following table provides estimated averages for College Hunks’ moving services:

Junk RemovalAverage Cost
Half Truck$300 – $400
Full Truck$600 – $800
Large appliance$100+ each
Three-seater sofa$150
Hot Tub (or other items that need significant disassembly)Starting at $100 + additional fee for disassembly (personalized to the item)

These junk removal rates are competitive. The company website states that its teams aim to be consistent with pricing for junk removal by sizing items based on how much room the items take up in the trucks. However, the different pricing between locations, with some offering single-item pricing and some only volume-pricing, leaves room for frustrating inconsistencies.

For moving rates, we found that most College Hunks franchises charge between $35 and $45 per mover for labor-only assistance.

For a truck and two movers, you’re looking at between $110 and $140 per hour, with a two to four-hour minimum — a standard in the moving industry.

College Hunks primarily handles smaller residential moves, so its long-distance move prices are custom. Contact College Hunks for a free quote if you need long-distance moving services.

How Can You Save Money With College Hunks?

According to the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University, 40% of families move for housing-related reasons, and 27% for job-related reasons. Both of these are factors we can’t always control and can make the cost of moving especially difficult to swallow, particularly when unplanned.

Here are some ways you can save money with College Hunks:

  • Bonus offers: If you book with College Hunks, you can access unique discounts for services such as AT&T Fiber, Blue Apron, and Blinds.com to help you save money on other aspects of your move.
  • Book on weekdays: College Hunks’ website states that one of the best ways to save is booking your move on a weekday. There is less demand for moving services on weekdays, which can save you a chunk of money during your move.
  • Franchise-specific discounts: This moving company doesn’t advertise company-wide discounts or price-matching like many providers. However, a specific franchise can give discounts at its discretion, so always ask the managing office about seasonal discounts, price matching, or other available offers.

How Do You Schedule a Move With College Hunks?

Take the following steps to schedule an appointment with College Hunks movers.

  1. Call College Hunks’ phone number at (833)-626-1326 to schedule an appointment or visit its website and choose from several moving options to start the process.
  1. Provide prompted information, such as entering your new and old address, so that the College Hunks website or representative can provide accurate information for your area.
  1. Finalize scheduling an appointment with the customer service representative, or provide your contact information on the website so the College Hunks team can contact you to finish the scheduling process and help you get a quote. When scheduling online, you can opt for a representative to give you a phone call or reach you via text message to suit your communication preferences.

So, Should You Choose College Hunks for Your Move?

College Hunks is an excellent choice for junk removal, hauling services, and moving labor for local residential moves. However, it doesn’t provide many specialty services and lacks availability in 12 states, making it a less-than-ideal option for long-distance moves across multiple states. If you’re interested in a long-distance move or need specialized services like auto shipping or antique packing, consider International Van Lines or American Van Lines, as these companies’ service areas and moving options are much more comprehensive.

Methodology: How We Rank The Best Moving Companies

At Today’s Homeowner, we strive to bring you the most transparent, accurate information for your home improvement projects. Our moving company ratings emphasize what matters most to you — reputable, affordable companies able to tackle a wide range of packing and moving tasks.

Our ratings are based on publicly available information about each company, secret shopping online and over the phone, customer-review analysis, and interviews with former and current professional movers.

A company can earn a maximum of 100 points across four categories converted to a five-star scale. We researched and analyzed dozens of full- and self-service moving companies and developed the following formula:

  • Transparency (30 Points): We awarded top points to companies that supplied quotes quickly and provided easy-to-read moving contracts. We used the availability of sample pricing and quick quote features, GPS tracking, and clear customer service hours to determine this metric. Points were also awarded for up-front communication regarding policies, licensing, insurance, and the clear listing of added fees.
  • Basic Service Options (20 Points): While this may seem like a given for most movers, a strong basic service profile is not guaranteed when you book your move. Movers that offer local, long-distance, and international moving while providing packing and loading with their basic service packages rate highly here.
  • Customization Options (30 Points): Aside from basic services, a comprehensive list of added services indicates a mover’s quality. Assembly and disassembly, valuation coverage, piano moving, car shipping, and similar add-ons indicate a mover that puts customer service first.
  • Reputation (20 Points): We assessed each mover’s Better Business Bureau (BBB) profile. We weighed BBB ratings and the company’s complaint response rate to calculate this metric.

We monitor company data on an ongoing basis to keep rankings and information up to date.
