After you’ve cut your grass for the last time in the fall, it’s important to prepare it for the cold, winter weather ahead. Here how.

To winterize a lawn mower:

  • Drain the gas, or run the mower until it’s out of gas.
  • Drain and replace the oil.
  • Clean or replace the spark plug.
  • Clean or replace the air filter.
  • Sharpen or replace the blade.
  • Clean the mower on top and underneath.

Danny Lipford: Marilynn sent in this question, “What do you mean when you say to winterize your lawn mower?”

Winterizing your mower means to clean it thoroughly and to prepare it for storage. First thing you want to do is to eliminate all of the gas in your gas tank and dispose of it properly. Or even better, just run the mower until it’s completely dry.

After that, change your oil, then replace your spark plug. And then check your air filter, and clean it thoroughly. And if it’s in bad shape, go ahead and replace it as well.

Next, your lawn mower blade is very important, so make sure it’s nice and sharp. Or if it looks pretty bad, go ahead and replace it as well.

Then, it’s time to do a little cleaning. Check all around the deck, and make sure it’s nice and clean and free of any grass clippings. And don’t forget underneath, and make sure you’re scraping and cleaning anything that might be attached under the deck of the mower.

You know a lot of people neglect this kind of a chore. But if you do everything right, it’ll be ready to mow, when you are ready to mow in the spring.
