Landscaping your yard can improve the look and value of your home but for most DIYers it can be a challenging task. Here are a few suggestions from award winning landscape designer Nicholas Walker to help get you started:

  • Work with, not against, your local environment and climate using native plants or ones that grow well in your area. The surrounding vegetation will tell you a lot about what type of plants grow best where you live.
  • Use landscaping and vegetation to protect your home from natural disasters. In dry climates subject to wildfire, landscape using ice plants, which release water when burned, along with other fire resistant plants to protect your home.
  • Take into account where you would like to have shade and privacy when landscaping your yard, and plant appropriate trees and shrubs in those areas.
