How to Clean Rusted Tools

An eroded wrench with a lot of rust.
Even the most rust-damaged hand tools can be revived.

Danny and Joe welcome callers’ questions each week on the Today’s Homeowner Radio Show.

Here’s a question from our Oct. 05 broadcast:

Mary in Michigan says, “Hi Danny and Joe! While talking with my brother, he mentioned that all his tools were impacted by vog, which is volcanic smog, during the eruption on the Big Island last year.

His home was one block from where the lava stopped (my other brother has his entire world covered by the lava) and now his Proto tools are all rusted.

Joe recently commented to a lady switching out all her copper handles to sand and paint the original ones as an option, and my question is could my brother do the same with his tools or is there a better way to restore them? They were of good quality.”

We tell Mary there are rust removers and rust converters. A popular brand is Krud Kutter from Rus-Oleum. This prevents the vog from affecting the metal on the tools.
