If the kitchen is the heart of the home, then a kitchen renovation is like open heart surgery. We’re taking a look at three very different kitchen remodels, from contemporary to classic to historic, all of which result in a more functional and attractive kitchen.
Contemporary Kitchen Remodel
In remodeling her kitchen, Kim Osburn, of West Bloomfield, Michigan, wanted to increase the functionally and traffic flow of her narrow, galley kitchen. After consulting with designers at KSI Kitchen & Bath, Kim decided on dark wood cabinets from Merillat with blue pearl granite countertops.
A glass and stainless steel tile backsplash provided the perfect accent for a sleek, contemporary look. Contrasting hardwood floors gave the kitchen a warm feeling of home.

Classic Kitchen Remodel
The goals for Linda Paradis, of Stafford, Virginia, in her kitchen renovation were to open up the space while improving the usability of the kitchen cabinets. Linda worked with designers at Reico Kitchen & Bath to plan the look and layout of her kitchen.
To open up the space, the wall between the kitchen and dining room was removed and replaced with a bar. Linda selected light brown, Shaker style, wood cabinets from Merillat with DeNova quartz countertops.

Historic Kitchen Remodel
Tom and Sue Lyon, of Mobile, Alabama, wanted to turn the clock back in their kitchen to make it more in keeping with their 1922 historic home. Out went the 1950s era painted metal cabinets; and in came white, frame and panel cabinets with nickel hardware, contrasting dark granite countertops, and a colorful mosaic tile backsplash.
The oak hardwood kitchen floor was chosen to match the rest of the home. Much attention to detail went into matching the new trim to the existing moldings in the house.

Tile Backsplash Over Drywall
You can install a tile kitchen backsplash directly over drywall or plaster without cement backer board as long as the surface is fairly flat and smooth. Use a notched trowel to apply thinset adhesive to the drywall, install the tile, then grout after the adhesive has cured overnight.
