The Basics of Insulation

There are dozens of insulation types and brands, and which is right depends on your home and your project. Each type of insulation has its advantages and disadvantages, but the most common insulation materials you will find are:

• Batt and roll/blanket insulation
• Blown-in insulation 
• Concrete block insulation
• Foam board or rigid board
• Insulating concrete forms (ICF)
• Loose-fill insulation
• Radiant barriers
• Sprayed foam insulation
• Structural insulated panels (SIPs)

If you have decided to install the insulation yourself, you must follow the manufacturer’s instructions and all safety precautions. However, for most types of insulation, it is recommended that you hire a professional. If you hire a certified professional to install your home insulation, be sure to follow these steps:

• Receive at least two, if not more, quotes. Don’t be surprised to find price differences from one company to another.
• Ask contractors about the types of insulation they are most comfortable installing. Different companies often specialize in certain types of insulation, so one company may be better suited to install the insulation you want over another.
• Ask each contractor which type of insulation they would recommend for your home. Because some contractors deal with certain types of insulation, you may receive quotes for different types of insulation.
• Ask about bundling air-sealing services with insulation installation. Air sealing is important for air quality and energy efficiency.
