Allen Lyle: As your home comfort system gets older, it’s going to need repairs—expect it, it’s going to happen. But at what point do you stop repairing and go ahead and replace the system?
Well, for that answer you need to turn to the 50% rule: anytime the cost of repairs approaches 50% of the overall value of the system, it’s generally time to replace it. Also, if your system is say over 12 years old or has a history of problems, then it’s a good time to replace it.
And, you know, there’s a lot of benefits to replacing an older or a problem system. The first one that comes to my mind—lower utility bills. I mean right off the bat, you’re going to start saving money. High efficiency systems can actually save you hundreds of dollars every year as compared to an old system.
And then I think about tax credits. Do you know on certain high efficiency models, you can recover up to 30% of the cost in the form of tax credits? I mean that’s a great incentive.
