Consider replacing the heating and cooling system on your home if:
- Repairing it will cost 50% or more of the overall value.
- The system is over 12 years old.
- The system has a history of problems.
Advantages of replacing an old HVAC system with a new one:
-
- Lower Utility Bills: A high efficiency system can save you hundreds of dollars every year when compared to older systems.
-
- Energy Tax Credits: You may be able to recover up to 30% of the cost of certain high efficiency systems in the form of tax credits.
-
- Eco-friendly: The refrigerants used in cooling systems today are much greener. For example, Lennox manufactures and uses an EPA-approved, chlorine-free refrigerant.
-
- Enhanced Comfort: Advanced technology in new systems result in more even temperatures, better humidity control, and a constant flow of conditioned air.
- Improved Air Quality: Better humidity control means a reduced threat of mold and mildew growth. Plus, some Lennox systems are available with Healthy Climate Filtration to minimize the impact of indoor pollutants.
This tip is brought to you by Lennox: Innovation never felt so good.

Allen Lyle: As your home comfort system gets older, it’s going to need repairs—expect it, it’s going to happen. But at what point do you stop repairing and go ahead and replace the system?
Well, for that answer you need to turn to the 50% rule: anytime the cost of repairs approaches 50% of the overall value of the system, it’s generally time to replace it. Also, if your system is say over 12 years old or has a history of problems, then it’s a good time to replace it.
And, you know, there’s a lot of benefits to replacing an older or a problem system. The first one that comes to my mind—lower utility bills. I mean right off the bat, you’re going to start saving money. High efficiency systems can actually save you hundreds of dollars every year as compared to an old system.
And then I think about tax credits. Do you know on certain high efficiency models, you can recover up to 30% of the cost in the form of tax credits? I mean that’s a great incentive.
Another benefit to think about is that they’re more environmentally friendly. The refrigerants used today are much greener. For example, Lennox manufactures and uses an EPA-approved, chlorine-free refrigerant.
Then let’s look at advanced technology. For that, that means you’re going to have a more comfortable experience in your home. That means more even temperatures, better humidity control, and, of course, a constant flow of conditioned air.
And as long as we’re talking about indoor air quality, that better humidity control means a less threat of mold and mildew growth. And some Lennox systems come equipped with a Healthy Climate Filtration, which minimizes the impact of indoor pollutants.
