If the forecast calls for flooding, take precautions to prevent damage to your HVAC units.

Stormwater doesn’t have to claim heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Taking just a couple of precautions could save your HVAC units during severe weather — or prevent additional damage.

If you anticipate flooding, turn the power off to the HVAC units. Turn the gas off if you have natural gas.

Many HVAC units come with vital internal components such as circuit boards and capacitors, and they should not get wet.

After storm water recedes, ask a professional to inspect the situation. If the units have been submerged, the recommendation likely will be to replace them.

Houston, Texas homeowners John and Donna Howard took one more precaution after receiving 50 inches of stormwater from Hurricane Harvey: They replaced their HVAC units and decided to place one large unit on a tall platform.
