Rust-Oleum Countertop Coating for Plastic Laminate

If the color of your plastic laminate countertops or cabinets are not to your liking, but you don’t want to go to the expense of replacing it, Rust-Oleum Countertop Coating may be the answer.

This special paint covers plastic laminate in a single coat without priming. It can also be used on vinyl, wood, or metal (prime bare wood and metal before applying). Simply clean the surface well with soap and water, lightly sand glossy finishes, then apply Rust-Oleum Countertop Coating using a foam brush and smooth roller.

Allow the coating to cure for three or more days before using the countertop. Rust-Oleum Countertop Coatings contains HomeShield Antimicrobial Protection to inhibit the growth of mold and mildew. Apply in a well ventilated area between 50° and 90° F and clean up with xylene.

  1. Tried to pickup a can of Rust-Oleum counter top paint from my local Homedepot, Ace hardware and Lowes but none of these stores carry it (in any color or texture). Tried to have them special order a kit but they would not do it since I only wanted 1 kit. They said they would order if I purchased a case. What a joke.

  4. I tried the Rust-O-Leum Countertop refinishing product and it worked pretty well. Looks great but there are a lot of little bumps. Like dust that settled on the counter while it was drying. I tried sanding out and painting on another coat but have the same problem. Any idea how to smooth it out without ruining the finish?

  6. i have just completed the Rustoleum countertop restoration for my kitchen counters.the protective coat looks like it’s not thick enough. can i apply an additional protective coat directly or do i have to sand the entire surface again?

  12. Used this in my bathroom… It’s been a week and it’s still soft you lean on it the clothing texture indents in it, but a cup on it it indents a ring… Help! How can I fix this?

  15. What do you mean “clean up” and what is xylene? Also, is only one coat needed and if not do I have to wait 3 days to apply another? Lastly, do I need to put a top coat on to help in resisting stains?

  16. I used this product in my bathroom. I did sand the countertop and clean it thoroughly but there are some areas with a grit to them. And some areas where I went back with the roller are not smooth. Can I lightly sand my first coat and then apply a second coat. It has been a few weeks since first coat was applied.

  18. I used the counter top product with chips. I followed all instructions but my counter top is rough due to the chips
    Tonight I’m taking a sander to it to Smith it out and resealing it.
    Great product and saved a ton of money. I also used the cabinet product and it works fabulously!

  19. Can Rust-Oleum Countertop paint be mixed with other oil based or acrylic paints to make a design in the paint? I am using the Cobblestone color but the cabinets are beige with a line of teal around the edging. Please let me know if I can make it look a little marbled? Thanks.

  21. Would love to know how to correctly apply the counter coating on a laminate counter top. Did apply did not sand have a lot of pimple like feeling to the counter. Used a sponge brush to apply did clean counters well. Can you help? What else should I do before I go further with this?
    I purchased because I wanted to do a one step project not add paint chips or anything else. Should I apply a poly to this after or will it be okay without that sealer. Will a poly yellow?

      That said, we do recommend a certain amount of prep work, including sanding, before painting the countertops.

      Whether you’re going for the solid or granite look, multiple steps will be necessary to successfully complete this type of project.

  23. Painted laminate countertop with rust oleum counter top paint. Color was wrong so painted over with same product but diffetent color. Surface now has cracks all over it. What can I do now. It had cured for 3 days. Can I sand this down and put on a new coat.

  24. I bought this Rustoleum Counter top kit and followed all directions to a tee . I spent the whole weekend doing my counter tops and they looked great after putting the top coat on. I woke up the next morning only to find small web cracks all over every square inch of the finish. I don’t understand what happen here. Did I get a bad kit ? Has anyone else had this problem?

      Absolutely! Formica is a plastic laminate, so this solution would work well for you.
      We always recommend sanding first.

  26. I had an old Formica countertop in my kitchen and used the countertop coating in wheat. Took me about 2 hours between coats and so easy! Looks great with my old cabinets and love how it turned out! Anything looks better than my old countertop and only cost me $20! I took pictures if anyone wants to see the finished product, I’d be happy to share. The tough part is the 3 day waiting period!

  27. I used this product and I’m so disappointed! I followed everything and did my research and now my counter tops have rough areas. I will never ever purchase this product and I suggest no one buy it!

  29. can I put a coat of rustoleum polyurethane over the top? I did the counter top coating and added rustoleum flakes. I wanted to seal the flakes onto the counter top.
