Tackling DIY projects together is a great couples activity. You might have heard the saying, “The family that plays together stays together” — it rings true because quality time strengthens every relationship, whether it’s a father and daughter or husband and wife.

The best DIY projects are the ones that look great and improve your home’s function. Here are three great do-it-yourself projects to try — we like these because they’re manageable with a little time and teamwork.

Moreover, each of these Home DIY projects will not only enhance your home but give you a fun story to tell to visiting friends and relatives.

    DIY Concrete Coasters

Looking for an easy but impressive DIY project to try? Making concrete coasters allows you to add personalized flair to your home decor while protecting your tables from drink stains.

    What You’ll Need

    • Container for mixing (an old yogurt container or plastic cup works great)
    • Cooking spray
    • Glue gun
    • Molds
    • One bag of Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete
    • Painter’s tape
    • Paint and paintbrush
    • Sandpaper
    • Sealer
    • Two tablespoons (one for concrete and one for water)

    Directions

First, lay out all the materials so there’s no time wasted looking for things once you start mixing the concrete. Then, spray the molds with cooking spray.

Wear gloves and mix 13 tablespoons of Quikrete and 10 tablespoons of water for each coaster. Add the concrete to your mixing container first, then the water. The mixture should resemble a thick pancake batter.

Pour the mixture into each mold and lightly tap the sides and bottom with a rubber mallet or hammer. This step gets rid of bubbles in the concrete. Then, let it sit and harden according to the package instructions.

Once the concrete sets, the coasters should fall out of the molds. Sand any rough edges or ridges with 100 and 220-grit sandpaper.

Use painter’s tape to make a cool design on the coaster. We recommend taping off any areas you want to remain the original color. Once the paint is dry, seal it with a clear, spray-on top coat. Let the sealer cure fully before using the coasters to prevent tackiness and smudges.

Finally, glue felt pieces to the bottom to protect tables and counters.

    Painted Flower Pots

Another fun DIY project is transforming plain terra cotta flower pots into works of art by painting fun designs on them. This DIY project is an easy way to add personality and visual interest to your yard or patio. Painted pots also make great gifts.

    What You’ll Need

    • Acrylic paints
    • Paintbrushes
    • Painter’s tape
    • Primer
    • Sealer
    • Terra cotta pots

    Directions

Start by cleaning the terra cotta pots thoroughly with soap and water. Let them dry completely.

Use painter’s tape to block off any areas you don’t want painted. Then, apply two to three thin coats of primer, letting it dry between coats.

Next, have fun painting your design using acrylic paints. We recommend bold patterns like stripes, polka dots, and swirls. Let the paint dry fully.

Seal the pots with an acrylic sealer to protect the paint. Let it cure for at least 24 hours before using the pots.

Display your DIY masterpieces in the garden or give them as gifts.

Displaying favorite photos in an artful arrangement makes for stylish home decor. Creating a photo gallery wall together is a great couples’ project.

Your favorite snapshots tell the story of your relationship and home. Displaying them artfully on a wall makes for great decor. It’s also a nice alternative to scrolling through photos on phones.

    What You’ll Need

    • Frames in coordinating colors and sizes
    • Level
    • Pencil
    • Photo prints
    • Nails, hammer, nail gun, or Command strips

    Directions

First, print out your favorite photos in various sizes. Buy frames that complement your decor.

We recommend mapping out an asymmetrical arrangement by lightly sketching your design in pencil on the wall.

Hang picture frames using nails, a nail gun, or Command strips. Use a level to ensure they are straight. Step back and make any tweaks. Rearrange and add pieces until you love how the photo collage looks.

Consider grouping frames by color scheme or chronology to create cohesion. Leave negative space between clusters and mix orientations and frame styles to add visual interest.
