When a system or appliance fails, homeowners find themselves swamped with multiple tasks like finding a repairman, diagnosing the problem and figuring out how to pay the bill. Investing in a home warranty allows a company to take care of this process for you.

Freedom Home Warranty ended its services in March 2020 and was officially acquired by Old Republic Home Protection (ORHP) on May 15, 2020. Our team has done extensive research on the best home warranty companies, and below, we’ll explain what Freedom Home Warranty offered, what customers can expect from their new provider and why we think you should consider American Home Shield as an alternate provider.

Freedom Home Warranty Overview

First launched in 2017 and originally known as America’s Choice Home Warranty, Freedom Home Warranty strived to add the element of flexibility across every facet of its service. Unlike its competitors, the company enabled customers to work with their own contractors. Also, a portion of each home warranty purchase goes to a charity of your choice.

Freedom Home Warranty plans were available in just a few states, including Tennessee, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Minnesota, Hawaii, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

Freedom Home Warranty offered three types of coverage packages: Patriot Protection, Liberty Protection and Freedom Protection. The plans were available for a 12-month period, but if you were to purchase a two-year plan, a 25% off discount would be applied to the second year’s premium.

  • Patriot Protection provided coverage for a combination of over 25 critical systems and appliances, including a few novelty additions not covered in many plans. They included conduit, recirculating pump, junction boxes and Whirlpool motor and pump assembly.
  • Liberty Protection covered everything under Patriot Production, plus common items such as refrigerators, ice makers and faucets.
  • Freedom Protection offered comprehensive protection for more than 45 home systems and appliances.

Freedom Home Warranty Costs

The cost of a Freedom Home Warranty contract ranged from $295 to $895 based on the property, plan type and whether it included any add-ons.

Freedom Home Warranty had a plan called Eagle Protection that could be applied to any of the three plans to receive a 25% discount off the second year price. With Eagle Protection, for a two-year contract, customers saved anywhere from $123.75 to $223.75.

Customers could either pay in full or make monthly payments through a debit or credit card. Monthly payments were subjected to a $5 processing fee. This means, with the monthly payment method, you would pay an extra $60 per year.

Freedom Home Warranty charged a $65 service fee per claim, which is $10 lower than the average industry rate of $75. Contracts could be canceled within 30 days of initial acceptance for free, but after that, there was a $35 cancellation fee.

Freedom Home Warranty Reviews

Freedom Home Warranty reviews showed a mix of both positive and negative feedback before it closed. Old Republic Home Protection has low-to-average customer ratings but an A+ and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau. There are more than 600 BBB customer complaints, but ORHP responds to many of them.

Positive Review:

We have had to use Old Republic a couple of times now … Every time has been an easy and smooth experience. I could not be happier. I go online and report the problem, and I hear back very quickly on who will be calling to schedule an appointment. Each company has responded promptly and have been able to resolve our issue. Maybe it’s where I live? I have not had any of the problems other reviewers have had with Old Republic or their contractors. I was referred to Old Republic by a friend who also had great experiences with them.

– Katherine N., March 2020

Negative Review:

“They sent three technicians to my house to try and fix my dishwasher. None of them were able to fix it. My dishwasher flooded my whole house two days after the latest technician came and now they are telling me they won’t cover a dime of the $3,000 in damages caused by their poor choice in technicians and lack of understanding of my issue. Horrible company. Better off using your $500 as kindling for a fire.”

While Freedom Home Warranty customers may enjoy working with Old Republic Home Protection, our team has found several other home warranty companies that we’d recommend over these options — primarily American Home Shield.

With almost 50 years in the business, American Home Shield is the industry founder and is available to homeowners in 49 states (excludes Alaska).

American Home Shield has three plans with increasing levels of coverage. Its base plan, the ShieldSilver Plan™, covers 14 major systems, including plumbing, heating and cooling, and electrical systems. The ShieldGold Plan™ covers the systems covered by the ShieldSilver Plan™ and adds coverage for major kitchen and laundry appliances up to $3,000. The ShieldPlatinum Plan™ covers all 23 systems and appliances in the ShieldGold Plan™ and adds $1,500 of roof-leak coverage. It also increases the coverage limit on appliances to $6,000.

You also have the flexibility to choose your own service call fee. There are three options — $75, $100 or $125 — per service call. The higher the amount you lock in, the lower your monthly payment will be. Depending on the service fee you choose, the price of a ShieldPlatinum Plan™ may cost about $59.99.

Home Warranty Rating Methodology

To help you find the best home warranty, our reviews team researched numerous home warranty companies, analyzing their coverage plans, pricing and customer service, among other factors:

  • Coverage: Home warranty companies that provide extensive coverage and protect important systems and appliances, including your air conditioning, refrigerator and heating, scored higher than companies with minimal coverage.
  • Plan variety: A provider with more coverage plans allows for more flexibility among customers. In general, most home warranty companies provide an appliances-only plan, systems-only plan and combination plan.
  • Pricing: We scored providers based on their monthly plan prices and service call fees compared to the industry average pricing. Companies with more affordable coverage received more points than companies with more expensive plans.
  • State availability: Where you live will determine what companies are available in your area. Home warranty companies that covered more states received more points than companies with a limited state availability.
  • Trustworthiness: There are some home warranty companies that are scams and don’t follow through on their service agreements. We rated companies based on their years of experience, ratings on the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and customer reviews.

To keep our data current, our team regularly updates the data points for each company to ensure their coverage offerings, pricing and availability are accurate.
