Our Preferred Home Warranty Alternatives
Today’s Homeowner recommends a few home warranty companies to our readers. Below, you’ll see our latest suggestions and their money-saving deals. You can also read our review of the companies with similar home warranty plans to learn more about these top picks.
Our Assessment of OneGuard Home Warranties
OneGuard Home Warranties was founded by property managers in 1990 and has grown into a one-stop shop for home care and maintenance. The company offers a unique combination of home warranty plans and home maintenance services, such as pest control and carpet cleaning. Through its products, OneGuard Home Warranties helps homeowners save money, energy, and time.
While researching plans from OneGuard Home Warranties, we were impressed by the eclectic selection of home maintenance services. We believe these services can definitely help homeowners save money in the long run and maintain the well-being of their homes.
From our experience, the few home warranty companies that do provide home maintenance services usually stick to pest control or rekey. OneGuard Home Warranties provides carpet cleaning, window cleaning, sprinkler repair, weed kill treatment, landscaping, and numerous other services.
Plans from OneGuard Home Warranties are very reasonably priced. They are actually lower than the industry average. Especially since every package is jam-packed with coverage and services, we believe these plans are worth every penny. Their service fee of $69 is also lower than the industry average, which ranges from $75 to $100.
The company’s maximum limits range from $250 to $2,500, which we consider to be quite generous. If you purchase the refrigerator upgrade, you can expand the coverage limit to $5,000, which is enough to purchase a top-of-the-line refrigerator.
OneGuard Home Warranties also promises to connect you with a contractor within four business hours, which is quite fast considering most home warranty companies take 24 to 48 hours to process a service request.
Sadly, OneGuard Home Warranties isn’t available to most homeowners, as the company only serves Arizona, Texas, and Nevada.

Coverage Exclusions with OneGuard Home Warranties
Home warranty plans don’t always cover every single part of an appliance or system. Here are a few examples of what is and isn’t covered by OneGuard Home Warranties. Read the details on each item on OneGuard’s website for a complete overview.
Kitchen Appliances
There are several components in major kitchen appliances excluded from coverage. These include detachable accessories, shelves, hinges, light bulbs and all other parts that don’t affect the appliance’s primary operation.
Carpet Cleaning Service
OneGuard Home Warranties provides one carpet cleaning service per term in up to three rooms or not more than 600 square feet. What’s excluded from coverage is permanent stain removal, pet urine and/or feces stains, pre-existing carpet damage and any other tough stains that may require enzyme treatments.
Washer and Dryer
All components that do not affect the main operation of a washer and dryer will not be covered.
Other than component-based exclusions, there are several general exclusion standards. For example, OneGuard Home Warranties does not cover systems and appliances under a manufacturer’s warranty or a homeowner’s insurance policy, nor do they cover systems classified as commercial. A more comprehensive list of exclusions should be available under the “Limitations of Liability” section in your contract.
Cost of OneGuard Home Warranties
Plans prices from OneGuard Home Warranties vary by state and the amount of coverage. Including add-ons to your plan will increase the cost, as well. Here’s a summary of starting monthly prices.
State | ApplianceGuard | SystemGuard | HomeGuard |
Arizona | $29 per month | $38 per month | $50 per month |
Texas | $30 per month or as low as $324 per year | $44 per month | $56 per month |
Nevada | $25-$27 per month or $300 per year | $34-$37 per month or $420 per year | $50-$57 per month or $660 per year |
These plans are very reasonably priced, especially since they include home care services, too. HomeGuard will cost under $60 a month for a total of 33 systems, appliances and services covered. You can save money by paying upfront for the whole year.
Add-ons are priced on a per-item basis, and the cost varies slightly by state. We recommend calling OneGuard for accurate pricing. For example, here is a general breakdown of add-on costs for Nevada homeowners.
Add-on | Price per month | Price per year |
Undetectable pre-existing conditions | $7 | $84 |
Built-in pool/spa (chlorine) | $18 | $216 |
Built-in pool/spa (salt water) | $33 | $396 |
Additional spa/pool pump (per unit) | $8 | $96 |
Built-in kitchen refrigerator upgrade | $15 | $180 |
Additional refrigeration units (per unit) | $5 | $60 |
Sprinkler system and timer | $5 | $60 |
Extended mainline plumbing | $8 | $96 |
Water softener | $6 | $72 |
HVAC equipment incompatibility protection | $10 | $120 |
Guest house | $23 | $176 |
As you can see, the prices for add-ons range from $5 to $33 a month, and no discounts are available if you pay for the whole year upfront.
OneGuard Home Warranties allows you to purchase an annual plan or pay in monthly installments, but note that you will be charged a $2 administrative fee per month. Also, those who opt for a monthly plan must make the first and last payment in advance.
OneGuard Home Warranties also charges a $69 service fee each time a contractor visits your home. This is slightly lower than the industry average of $75 per call. The service fee must be paid when a service request is scheduled. You are obligated to pay the service fee even if:
- The service request is canceled while the contractor travels to the house.
- Required access isn’t provided to perform the necessary repairs.
- The contractor’s diagnosis results in a coverage denial.
- OneGuard Home Warranties approves your request for a second opinion, and the resulting outcome is the same as the first opinion.
All the repairs made by OneGuard’s contractors are guaranteed for 30 days. That means if the system or appliance fails again within 30 days, you will not be charged a service fee.

Home Warranty Rating Methodology
To help you find the best home warranty, our reviews team researched numerous home warranty companies, analyzing their coverage plans, pricing and customer service, among other factors:
- Coverage: Home warranty companies that provide extensive coverage and protect important systems and appliances, including your air conditioning, refrigerator and heating, scored higher than companies with minimal coverage.
- Plan variety: A provider with more coverage plans allows for more flexibility among customers. In general, most home warranty companies provide an appliances-only plan, systems-only plan and combination plan.
- Pricing: We scored providers based on their monthly plan prices and service call fees compared to the industry average pricing. Companies with more affordable coverage received more points than companies with more expensive plans.
- State availability: Where you live will determine what companies are available in your area. Home warranty companies that covered more states received more points than companies with a limited state availability.
- Trustworthiness: There are some home warranty companies that are scams and don’t follow through on their service agreements. We rated companies based on their years of experience, ratings on the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and customer reviews.
To keep our data current, our team regularly updates the data points for each company to ensure their coverage offerings, pricing and availability are accurate.
