3. Adding Wainscoting

Wainscoting adds texture and visual interest to a room, but some homeowners may be hesitant to tackle the project.

Novice DIYers can still get the wainscoting look in a fraction of the time and effort. You just need picture frames, construction adhesive, nails and paint.

Adhere picture frames to the wall’s lower half with construction adhesive, nail them into the wall, and paint the wall’s lower half to match the frames.

Finally, add a chair rail and you’ve got instant wainscoting!

4. Adding an Accent Wall

Building an accent wall is a simple, inexpensive way to give a plain room some character.

You just need wood siding, construction adhesive, nails and paint to completely transform the room and give it a focal point.

First, lay out your grid, which includes vertical and horizontal pieces of wood siding, and nail it into place. Not all siding boards will land on studs — you can use construction adhesive on those pieces.

Then just prime the grid, caulk the edges and coat with finish paint!

5. Building a Fire Pit

A firepit turns a plain backyard into an inviting gathering place — and building one is easy when you use a fire pit kit.

Kits usually come with everything you need to build the firepit, including the concrete blocks and fire ring insert.

Installation is easy — just stack the stones, using the fire ring as a guide, add construction adhesive between each layer, and that’s it! You’re ready to build a fire.
