Renewable Energy #2: Wind Power

You may not always notice it, but the earth’s atmosphere is a constantly surging and swirling sea of power. When the wind blows, it carries with it massive amounts of force, and that force can be harnessed.

A wind turbine does just that by allowing the wind to move the turbine blades, which in turn spins a generator to produce electricity. Since wind turbines don’t burn fossil fuels to produce energy, wind power doesn’t add pollutants—like carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and mercury—to the air.

Of course, in order to get a piece of that sweet wind energy pie, you’ll need to invest in a wind turbine for your home. Consult the U.S. Department of Energy Small Wind Electric Systems Consumer Guide for detailed information on what exactly you’ll need to start allowing the breeze to cover your electric bill.
