The last step in laying a tile floor is applying and sealing the grout. After the tile adhesive has set, apply grout to the joints using a rubber float. Grout comes in a variety of colors, but darker grout tends to show less stains. Stainproof grout is also available, though it isn’t as easy to work with as regular grout.
Once the grout has dried, apply a grout sealer to the joints to prevent stains from occurring. If grout is stained already, use a grout stain pen to make the grout a uniform color.
The grout on my bathroom tile is cracking and coming up. I don’t believe it was sealed properly. I would like to get this re-grouted but don’t know if I can get someone to do it and am a little nervous about doing it myself.
Is there a paint that would do a better job of sealing white grout than the grout sealers on the market today? I’ve read the reviews and people have said they needed to apply the sealers two or three times before it actually seals the grout. My friend said her sister used a paint over her floor grout and it worked. Is this a plastic based paint, instead of the water or oil based grout sealers? A chemist friend of mine said it is probably a plastic based paint which doesn’t allow any open spaces for stains to get in.
Hi, Josephine!
Using paint to seal grout is unusual. (In fact, we’ve never heard of that before.)
However, we have seen tinted sealers that look like paint, so perhaps that’s the product your friend’s sister used.
We do recommend following the tips in this video for a professional-grade installation.
Good luck!
