Besides not being very attractive, an unfinished concrete slab floor in a garage is dusty and easily absorbs spills and stains, such as oil from car engines. Here are several options that are available to finish a concrete garage floor.

Garage Floor Finish Options

  • Concrete Stains: Applying a latex concrete stain is the least expensive way to finish a garage floor. Whether translucent or solid, stains seal the concrete and provide a more finished look, but car tires may mar the finish.
  • Epoxy Coatings: While more expensive than stains, two-part epoxy coatings are also more durable. Most epoxy kits also include decorative chips to embed in the wet finish to add character and hide dirt.
  • Interlocking Floor Tiles: The easiest, but most expensive, option is installing rubber or vinyl floor tiles that interlock with each other. There’s little prep time required, the tiles are very durable, and since they don’t require adhesive, they’re easy to install.

Allen Lyle: If you’re considering making changes or improvements to your garage, you may consider making some changes to the flooring. Besides being unattractive, an unfinished concrete slab is dusty and easily absorbs all kinds of spills and stains.

The least expensive solution is the application of a simple latex stain. Whether translucent or solid, these stains will seal the concrete and provide a more consistent look. However, in some cases hot car tires can mar the finish.

Epoxy coatings are a bit more expensive, but they’re also more durable. These products require a bit more prep of the slab before you mix the two epoxy components together for application. Most epoxy kits include decorative chips which you embed in the wet finish to add character and hide dirt.

The easiest but often most expensive option is rubber or vinyl textured floor tiles that interlock with each other. There’s very little prep required, they’re terribly resilient, and because they require no adhesive they’re incredibly easy to install.
