How to Install a Ceramic Tile Backsplash

A decorative ceramic tile backsplash can really serve to dress up the space above the countertops in your kitchen, as well as providing protection from the inevitable splatters and spills. This project features a striking pattern of diagonally cut tiles with a polished marble mosaic inserted in the middle.

Watch as Danny takes you step-by-step through the process, from preparing the wall surface and installing the tile to sealing the grout from stains.

  1. My husband wants to tile above our existing 4″ granite backsplash. I told him it’s not usually done that way. Can you give me advice. Thanks

  2. Judy It sounds like you need to have someone grout your backsplash. If the pieces are already down, I am not sure if you would use mastic again then regrout or what. I am not an expert on it…but I do know that there are times that people have to repair the grout. I would be more concerned as to why they were coming down, what were they adhered to? If they are coming down around an area that is wet then perhaps moisture has built up behind the tile causing it to fall off. If it wasn’t installed properly that could be an issue I would think. I may be wrong. I know our bathroom had that problem because the people before us didnt use cement board in the SHOWER and when the grout started to give way water got behind the tile and it was a mess…you dont want that to happen to you trust me.

  3. We had a liminate applied to the wall behind our stove and countertop. When my husband took the laminate down, some of the paper from the wallboard came with the laminate leaving the wallboard needing repair for the application of ceramic tiles. Please give directions on how to accomplish this.
    Thank you

  4. I am remodeling my kitchen and have the same problem as Julia had. When I pulled off the laminate some of the paper came off the wall board. Can I skim coat it with joint compound, prime it and then install my travertine backsplash? Or should I replace the sheetrock with cement backer board?

  7. I had granite countertops installed and I plan to put ceramic tile up as a backsplash. Should I put some type of sealer coat on the drywall? Should I use a flexible grout next to the granite and in the corners? With 1/8 inch grout joints, will sanded grout work better?

  8. Durability Question about Ceramic Range Backsplash: Is there a problem with heat off the stove delaminating the ceramic. Does there have to be a special high heat wall board, hard board, or sheet rock with a special glueing compound. Remember that the radiant heat off the range will probably be above 1200 degrees F. That is why a metal backsplash is used to deflect heat.

  9. Hi, I am almost finished with my kitchen reno but I am stuck with backsplash ideas. My kitchen is a horseshoe shape so I have quite a lot of backsplash (almost 50 sq.feet. Would glass tile be too much? My floors are a dark gray tile, I have maple cabinets and a HD dark laminate countertop with browns and blacks). I have stainless steel appliances, medium gray walls. I think I need a splash of colour for countertops or at least go lighter. Any suggestions? Thanks for any advise you have.
