Stopping Squeaks in Wood Floors

Whether you’re a first time homeowner, or simply facing challenges with maintaining your home, here’s a tip that can help.

There’s not much that beats the beauty of a hardwood floor, but when that floor is full of squeaks and creaks, it can be pretty annoying. Here are a few tips to help eliminate that noise:

    • If you have access under the floor, try driving in some wooden shims between the underside of the floor boards and the floor joists where the squeak is occurring. Be sure to add a drop or two of wood glue to the shim before putting it in place.
    • You can also apply a bead of quality construction adhesive to both sides of the floor joist where it meets the bottom of the floor boards.
  • If access below the stairs is not an option, countersink a wood screw through the floor board and into the joist, then cover the screw head with matching wood putty.
