Inverter and Conventional Portable Generators

Portable generators are either conventional or inverter. Conventional generators use a mechanical alternator to produce AC power while inverter generators produce DC power and convert it to AC power using digital electronics. Inverter generators are smaller and lighter but more expensive.

Conventional generators run at a constant 3600 RPMs while inverter generators can run at variable speeds depending on the electrical demand. This allows inverter generators to run at slower speeds much of the time, which saves fuel and reduces noise.

Inverter generators usually produce cleaner power with a total harmonic distortion of less than 5% while conventional are capable of greater output and extended run times.

  1. Hi Danny,

I am a fan of your blog posts quite a bit. I generally read them in my google reader so I don’t typically visit the site unless something you say piques my interest. Today however I need to complain a bit. I wanted to let you know the video in this post autoplayed in my reader. Things like this usually drive me nuts as I consider it rude that a video just starts playing without my interaction. Maybe I’m being a bit cranky, but if this becomes a common thing I’ll have to drop the rss subscription to keep my sanity. Sorry. Otherwise, I think you have a great site and excellent content.

    • Hi Chris,
Sorry to hear you’re having problems with the RSS feed. We are working to resolve the issue and hope to have it fixed soon. Thank you for your feedback.
