Don’t throw out those old, broken crayons. Instead, remove the paper, melt them in the microwave, and pour the melted wax into molds to form fun new shapes and colors.
To recycle old crayons:
- Sort crayons by color.
- Peel off the paper covering.
- Put similar colors together in a microwavable plastic cup.
- Heat the crayons on high in the microwave until the wax has melted.
- Pour the hot wax into plastic candy molds.
- Allow the hot wax to cool.
- Remove crayons from the mold and use for coloring or as gifts.

It’s a fact, make something fun and kids will do it; and here’s a fun way to encourage recycling old, broken crayons. Gather up all the colors, and make sure you peel off any paper labels. Next, separate them into different color groups. You can melt these groups together, or you can mix some up a little bit and make a totally different color.
When melting the crayons, you can use an old microwavable plastic cup. Heat on the highest setting until the wax is completely melted. Then carefully pour the melted crayon into plastic candy molds, and let them cool for just a little bit. You can speed the process by placing the mold in the refrigerator.
When the mold is cool, let the kids pop out the new fun-shaped colors. These also make some very eco-friendly, no-cost gifts your child can give to friends and family members; and the best part is you’re teaching them to be green.
